Hello, and welcome back to GMax Studios. Over the past few episodes, we have been discussing about how to shoot in Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter Priority Mode, and even in the Manual Mode. In today's episode, we shall take a look as to how to shoot in the Program Mode. To switch to the Program Mode on a Nikon, or on a Canon, we have to switch to the P Mode.
Now let's see what happens when we switch to the P Mode. The camera itself chooses the best setting for the scene, in terms of Shutter Speed, and Aperture. Now most people think that shooting in the Program Mode is just for beginners, and it's not actually true, because the Program Mode, is a very powerful Mode in which the camera takes all the decisions related to Aperture and Shutter Speed and you as photographer, focus on the two most important things in photography. One which is focus and the other one which is your composition.
Now the Program Mode has an extremely powerful setting called the Flexible Program Mode. It is denoted by a star that appears next to the P when you enter the Flexible Programming Mode. To get into the Flexible Program Mode all you have to do is turn the dial while in the program Mode that's all.
What the Flexible Program Mode does that it locks the exposure value, it locks the exposure of the setting and you are free to change your Aperture or your Shutter Speed and your exposure value will not changed. Now that is an extremely powerful thing to have at tip of your fingertips because you can in the moment decide whether you want to shoot the scene at a wider Aperture or at a faster Shutter Speed.
So let's enter the Flexible Program Mode by turning the dial and we will see a star appear right next to the P when we turn the dial. And if we keep turning the dial in one direction we will see that the Shutter Speed becomes faster and faster without the exposure changing as you can see from the exposure meter.
And finally we arrived at F1.4 which is the maximum Aperture on my lens at 140th of a second which is exactly the same reading which was there at the manual settings at the beginning of the previous video clip. Now lets see what happens when we turn the dial in the opposite direction. The Shutter Speed becomes slower and slower and the Aperture keeps closing down in order to compensate for the Shutter becoming slower. So here it is, F11 at 1.3 seconds. We usually use the P of Program Mode when we don't have time to fiddle around with the settings and time to take decisions regarding whether to shoot in the Aperture Priority Mode or on Shutter Priority Mode and we cannot afford to miss the shot.
I usually don't shoot in the Program Mode, but what I try and do is when I keep my camera in the bag, I switch it to the Program Mode. So in that case, if I need to take my camera out and shoot something at a moments notice I know that my camera is ready. Do subscribe to our channel and do share our videos with your friends.

I'm a nikon D7200 girl thank you so much , i'm still learning to use my camera . i have had enough of the auto button. Want to go onto P mode . Can not wait for the next subject on Light balance. I get told to much garbage from other people thinking they know Photography . Easy to understand on the subject on P mode love your video .

love this video tutorial. I have been shooting in aperture priority mode and shutter speed priority for some time now switching between the two settings and now with programme mode I can work much quicker staying on one setting.

Had my Nikon D7200 and use manual mainly but trying to take advantage of both aperture and shutter mode. Have to say P mode scared me as I did not have a clue about it. Thanks for the video, and the tip at the end, I will have a P practice ASAP.

Great tips for shooting in programe mode. In Canon T2i/550D it is called program shift & becomes available by pressing the shutter halfway down. Program shift is not possible if we use flash.

Good explanation. Only thing that I would like you to explain is that if you try to photography your children running on a low light situation, your P mode will fail. That is when you need to have control over the camera. You will need faster speed and bigger aperture. Other thing is if you expend a fortune in a camera to use it on P mode, you will have similar result with your mobile phone.

thanks for the tutorial this will help me a lot, just wana ask you something when I try to capture image in low light area and try to adjust exposure but its difficult to me to do that because I wana shoot pic with higher shutter speed with low ISO and unable to do that, if I decrease shutter speed the camera takes so much time, I am using Nikon D3100 55mm lense

You are missing the ISO, that we decide for P mode to function with the flexibility we desire. Auto Mode for ISO won't make it fully flexible. And that is crucial in deciding how much noise in what condition.

i shoot with sony, canon and nikon bodies and they are all great cameras that give excellent results, however my sony SLT A mount camera bodies have two major features that lead the pack, first the Electronic viewfinder that allows you to see the finished product before you actually shoot the image which opens the door for many many other features and second is the body stabilization...........i shoot for pleasure....

yes and no, I think if is a preference. but me I like to be in full control to make the shot the way I want. I have a signature when taking photos likes most professional photographers. and if you use p mode. you can't do much than shoot. so yes you right l. if you want to focus on shooting p is the way to go or auto.

+Jorge n Sindy Cortez I don't think is preference i think is more about occasions. and what i mean is, in a studio is logic you go on manual, Once you set everything you ready to go, but if you go out with your friends and have to re set WB, Exposure, ISO, Aperture, Focus...every 5 steps is a nightmare at least for me. Maybe I am just not as experienced as you are.

Trouble is, shoot a bride in her white dress in P mode, she will come out too dark. While the groom in black will come out too light - sometimes the images are unrecoverable or causes too much noise upon correction.

Great video thanks. I have a problem with Program Mode on a Nikon D610. I find it useful to switch to P* by moving the rear dial so I can choose the aperture or shutter speed. But after I take the shot I find that the dial no longer alters the shutter speed/aperture, they stay fixed at the cameras chosen default combination. I can only change them again with the rear wheel if I turn the camera off and on> Surely there is a simpler way to do this?

Thanks so much for your comment! I have a D610 myself and I tried turning the dial and it wouldn't switch to P*. I was very confused! But after I read your comment, I turned the camera off and then on and then when I turned the dial, it switched to P*

Trusted Khan Buy a Manfrotto or any other aluminium tripod which is not too light. Remember, in tripods like Manfrotto you can always buy a separat ball head later.

Buy the Nikon D750. The D810 is a great camera if budget is no issue but the D750 will fulfill all your needs.

+MD SHAHID KHAN RONY In auto - the camera will be on auto ISO and the flash will pop up if it feels the need. In my understanding - those are the two basic differences.

+MD SHAHID KHAN RONY I think that it also depends on camera. I have a Canon PowerShot SX200 (which is a point and click), on auto I cannot do a focus and recompose, I need to move the dial to Program mode to do that. I don't know if it's the correct term, but it's when you center on the screen your main focus point (and also evaluation point), press the shutter halfway and then move your camera to frame what you want. On my Nikon D3300, Auto also decide on which focus area you want (evaluative), but P let you keep your AF area in Auto. So P is good if you don't want to mess with aperture and shutter speed, but want to decide on what to focus. Maybe I got stuck with the rules of thirds, so P is very good because it let me focus on the face of my subject, and then move my camera to the right or left and keep the focus on what I want. Edit: on Auto mode, the D3300 places the focus on Auto mode, and on Program mode, I can set the Focus mode to whatever I want ;)

+MD SHAHID KHAN RONY Auto is fully automatic. No flexible programming. Plus it will also pop your flash when it thinks it should - you have no control.

+Abdul Rehman Bhatty At this point of time there is no particular company which can be termed the best. It all depends on the model of the camera and the budget you have. I use Nikon and I have been doing so for years, though I shoot with Sony and Fuji as well. Canon also makes some fantastic cameras as does Sony. I feel that the best value for money is the Nikon D5300.

What is the difference between Program mode and Auto then? Is it just that in P mode you can go to P* mode?

WaveRyeDer99 If you are talking about the AUTO mode as written on the camera - then there are a few basic differences. You cannot chose white balance or ISO in AUTO mode, it is all auto. Hell, it even pops and fires the built in flash on its own, if it feels the need to! That''s the AUTO mode for you!

@@gmaxstudios yes when I use the dial at the back then it change from P to P* on the lcd screen but neither shutter speed or aperture values can be changed by using the dial. So I changed it to M and set it on auto iso. In that way I can change both the shutter speed and aperture with the dial.
