A strange tip for close up bird photography: talk to the birds. It doesn't matter what you say, just say it calmly. When you stalk a bird quietly, the bird will take you for a predator. When you talk to it, and make yourself seen, many birds won't think of you as a predator. Some let you get very close, and some even come close themselves out of curiosity. Gets strange looks from passer-bys, but works.

Please don't do this. I've been birding about 25 years. I've never heard such advice. Yes, a bird may be curious about what you are doing. But the number 1 rule of birding is to not do anything that disrupts the bird's behavior.
@electronicblueberry

@@formermpc10 Hey, thanks for your input. I should have maybe made clear in my comment that I'm doing this with birds in the park / yard / city, and not in a remote or wild setting. With a wide angle lens you'll need to get close to them anyway, so would'nt the bird be much more disrupted by being startled when they notice someone stalking up on them?

I used an old camera I have good memories of for pictures of Sandra playing with the cat in LED lighting. For lack of sensitivity I could not prevent movement blur. Both Sandra and the cat lost interest in playing before I grabbed a better camera. But Sandra says I take the best pictures of her. The new gear works in a variety of lighting for publishing them. So I can buy new gear at regular intervals. I edit the radio club newsletter pictures to print on domestic printers. More Mega Pixels allows more originals to print at 300 dots per inch to size A1 (33x23 inch).

Another myth: larger sensors give a flatter perspective, because longer focal lengths are needed for a given AOV. There is no excuse for being wrong on this once you have been shown how it's wrong. I spend very little time editing photographs. Close to zero, actually. I shoot like I used to when I shot slide film. What's funny is that when pros shot slides and all they did was pure editing (i.e. selecting the best frames). No corrections, no retouching, no manipulation. Retouching or compositing turns a photograph into art (photography is not art, but art can be created from photos). If you actually declare it, which you should, then it's not really cheating, because you have been up front about it. Retouching isn't editing, anyway. They are different operations. But I still shoot RAW as insurance. You never know when someone might need that extra bit of quality.
@Sommerlath2006
@Sommerlath2006 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t shot much slide film I don’t know much about that type of film, so forgive me if I’m wrong. But doesn’t the choice of slide film affect the colour balance and general look of the final image same as negative film does? I would consider that a form of editing too.
@Biosynchro
@Biosynchro 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sommerlath2006 Yes, different films had different characteristics for sure. Some were low contrast, some were high contrast. Some were fine grained, some were high speed. Some were even tungsten balanced as you may recall. But that is not editing at all. Editing is cutting down all your photos to a refined selection.
@Sommerlath2006
@Sommerlath2006 2 жыл бұрын
@@Biosynchro Sorry, but you said you don’t spend time editing photographs, did you mean that you don’t select the best pictures or that you don’t process them at all? It’s just that I would consider that nowadays a minimal processing is always necessary, since there is no “pre-processing” when you choose a film to shoot with it has to somehow happen latter. Or do just use the jpegs directly from the camera? In that situation does it ever end up feeling a bit limiting? Different cameras will have different looks, but changing cameras is not the same as changing film.

Most myths can be summed up as.. nobody makes prints anymore. If they did they would know whether their lens was good enough, whether they had enough megapixels, and so on. Instead they chase theoretical superlatives that have absolutely no bearing on the stories they are trying to tell.

Good point, Peter. Just a quick thought which crossed my mind: In general I agree with the fact that photography as any other creative activity is free of hard rules. However, the mind of people differs a lot and so does their approach. Some people like to learn methodically, picking up a book and learn, following „rules“, adding own creativity later. Others do the opposite. That’s all fine and part of the freedom. Stay well and have a nice pre Christmas time.

Hey Peter, I think I’m becoming a better photographer by using my well used older camera XZ2 or Stylus 1. The Stylus 1 is quickly becoming my everyday “Go To” camera. It’s small size fits into a messenger bag nicely, the F2.8 and fantastic 14-150mm lens are excellent. For travel it’s the EM 10 mk ii (love the flip up screen) and for a planned photo outings or tripod shots I take my EM 1 mk ii. In the early days of photography, say up to the first decade of the 20th century, it was common to make composite prints from several different negatives. This was relatively easy because they used large glass plates. The idea of manipulation as cheating probably didn't appear until purists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson came along. The only time editing or manipulation is a problem is when there is a deliberate attempt to deceive.

Better gear always gives you more possibilities, be it sports, cars, bikes etc. However what is judged is the end result, and if you don’t have the skills to take advantage of your gear, or if it didn’t alter the result in a specific case it is no significance. Some photos I have taken took advantage of specific features, like live-composite, but you still have to know how to get a good result. Also there is the law of diminishing returns, it;s not a direct relationship with how much you invest and how much the results improve. And in most cases experience/talent has a much larger impact on the results. So ask yourself, should I spend a thousand euros on a better camera kit, or should I spend it on a trip where I can explore photography with my current setup? In most cases there are other things than gear investments that will improve your portfolio much more. But if you actually have reached limits, so tech is holding you back, it would make sense to upgrade.

for the love of god, the term "pro photographer" only means that someone earns the majority of their income from which they live on, from photography. That's it. there is no other definition. Being pro has nothing to do with how good or how experienced the photographer is. It is not a compliment to be "pro". it is not a right of passage or any other tier of excellence it is a business and financial term. why is this so hard for people in the photography world to understand?

@oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer 2 жыл бұрын
Focal length is not a useful measure of a lems. Angle of view is an extremely useful measure of a lens. If you are looking at two mountains with a gully between, and a sycamore tree in that gully, probably you will choose a length that coveres both mountains. Whether you have an Olympus OM-D camera, or a Phase One, the ideal lens will cover that, no less and not a lot more.

@@ForsgardPeter Yeah, that's a much better wording of the myth, I think. Also, additional for amateurs like me. I don't like photographing boring stuff, nature and cityscapes don't satisfy me. @oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer 2 жыл бұрын
@@RDMracer Still, it's not the focal length that's important, it's the angle of view. My 40-150 Olympus lens affords similar angles of view as 80-300 on a Nikon D6.
@RDMracer
@RDMracer 2 жыл бұрын
@@oneeyedphotographer yeah, ofcourse, but that's not the point... I just don't think in angle of view terms, I think in mm for MFT. Also conversion is more complicated than you mentioned because a MFT sensor has 4:3 ratio instead of the APS-C 3:2. My original point is that you have the right focal length for every situation. A very long tele being affordable is one of the strongest points of MFT.
