The new Photonis Intens 4G night vision tube head to head against the most advanced US intensifier tube on the market - L3 Gen 3 unfilmed white phosphor.
This is the first of several comparisons we will do between the Photonis Intens and US Gen 3 unfilmed image intensifiers.

Interesting comparison, I do realize that at the time of making my comment three years and six months have elapsed since this video was uploaded so maybe the technology has evolved which would mean that my comment is only applicable to new NVDs but on 15 of May 2020 I purchased an NV monocular equipped with a Photonis Intens 4G green phosphor tube with a FOM between 2100 and 2200 (not an ECHO). I have tried to test the unit under the most light deprived environments to find the NVG operational limit. My experience is that even in a night with no moon over the horizon, with a heavily overcast sky, and under heavy tree canopy the 4G tube is able to present a crystal clear, bright, non-scintillating image. Just my two cents.

Clouds can bounce back city glow, so unless you were in a very rural area I would retest the unit.

Photonis is slightly darker. Is l3 unfilmed worth the extra money? Supplement ir light or thermal for scanning and your good to go. Looks like they both need ir light to positively Id under those conditions.

Jeden z nielicznych "prawdziwych" filmów pokazujących możliwości dwu noktowizorów USA gen 3+ (pozbawiony zdaje się bariery ochronnej przetwornika) oraz francusko-holenderski Photonis ( nie wiem czy to jest gen 3 czy gen 2++ bo Photonis nie uznaje amerykańskiego oznaczenia generacji noktowizorów). Na filmiku próżno szukać pięknego, soczystego , czyściutkiego obrazu pracy noktowizora jaki widzimy w fantastycznych filmach. Jeżeli najlepszy na rynku sprzęt ledwie "ciągnie", to jak radziły by sobie w takich warunkach obserwacyjnych amerykańskie gen 3 omni 7 czy Photonisy xr5 gen 2+ na to pytanie lepiej nie szukać odpowiedzi... Tylko ceny mordują...

Would you say the L3 would be better in this environment, where the 4G would be better in more urban areas or areas? seems between the two videos that's what I got from the comparison.

the photonis intense 4g wp tube in this video has a way lower SNR of 29.6 compared to a SNR of 33.6 of the L3H filmless wp. For me, the L3H filmless tube looks about 10-15% better but the L3H tube also has way better specs. In my opinion, if both tubes had the same specs, maybe the advantage of the L3H tube (regarding the brightness) would be at 5-10% in such bad lighting conditions. Also keep in mind that the Photonis Intense 4G tubes have other advantages over the L3H tubes like seeing out of band, a better shock rating of 500G and it can handle bright light sources way better.

Refurbished pvs/4 is the best gen 2 scope ever made, they pick up tons of light because of those big lenses. There's a company that rebuilds them and sells them on eBay for around $1000.

Is this video to show that L3 looks better? when your other video says the photonis is the best and nothing compares?

at that price point your best bet is one of the digital night vision scopes. it will not look as good as this, but you will be able to spot and shoot critters at night much better than you would otherwise. ~$500 is where they mostly sit. i recommend the photon ones over the ATN ones, because they are lighter and better on battery life. but if you don't care about batteries or weight, the ATN ones work just as well with some nifty gee-whiz features
