If its an easy image like that one sure, just sky at the top and samey looking grass at the bottom, easy to fill. Now try one with complex stuff onscreen, and watch it fail hard.

you can also pick the layer... ctrl + R them ctrl + shift + I , go to select, modify, expand to 5, then content aware fill. hehehe.

Control and click on the layer. The layer get selected ctrl+I Invert selection. And content aware fill

@@amazing_graphics No its not controllable but it reduces time. If it should be controlled we can go to edit and then select content aware fill in the drop down so we can control the filling.

you could use the only Crop tool if set the check there "content aware". No any additional selections are needed.

First unlock the bg layer . Then follow step by step until result achieve. If you exercise implement first step when completed them move to next step. Instead using content aware use fill then content aware from edit menu

Don't change image format 1 open image in Ps 2 you have single layer background layer If you unlock background layer and crop via crop tool you see square area If you don't unlock bg layer when you crop with crop tool a layer generate by the name of crop preview The final result is the same
