I came back to this video to make a warning to all future viewers: This video greatly exaggerates the difference between RGB and CYMK. Yes, CYMK will reduce the contrast and saturation and provide a more pastel colour palette, BUT this effect will only be noticeable on images like the one used in the video, which has VERY bright block colours. Your every day photographs of friends, pets, nature, holidays etc. will be barely distinguishable from the RGB original, unless the photo is high-contrast and oversaturated. Basically ask yourself this: "Are your images as bright and colourful as the one used in this video?" If the answer is no, you have nothing to worry about. I have just transformed dozens of photos of sunny vineyards, grape vines, winemakers, wine caskets, bottles, glasses etc from RGB to CYMK and the difference is laughably minimal. Don't let this video scare you from CYMK.

Bloody hell thank you for this video. I drew an artwork for a client who wanted to print it out, and the colours I used were utterly washed out after they requested that I convert to CMYK for commercial printing. My illustration was a summer themed one, the conversion changed it to a Depression-era piece. You're a lifesaver!!

Yeah, but you should be able to save this version as CMYK open this new version, then convert to and from RGB back to CMYK under the image mode tab (saving each version in between). This way you can't be over 75% ink levels. At least this has worked when I've had to make corrections for a printer before. Cheers

Lee Vam because if you send the file to the printer without having used his second video to adjust for the colour content of the shadows, it will be rejected. So it's a useless tutorial unless you pay lynda.com membership !

You can reduce total ink without the second video. I bet there are plenty of videos that show you how to do that. On colorful images still far better result than simply converting to CMYK.

Not perfect but it definitely saved one of my works. It is hard that some projects need to be on the computer and some need to be printed too. It is also hard to predict it is successful or not when you are just learning. Though it is best to start projects in CMYK

Great video, thanks! Question: when I switch to CMYK mode, the colour looks exactly the same, not desaturated like in your video. I know there is a colour loss though, because when I convert to PDF/JPEG/TIF, the colour is desaturated. Is there a setting in CS6 that will allow me to see the changes as I am making them? I followed all your steps, and the PDF looks like it should, but the Photoshop window that I am working from looks way darker than it should. Basically, I can't accurately see the changes I am making unless I look at the PDF.

Hi, I have a problem with converting from RGB to CMYK. I really hope for your help, because I find nothing on the internet. When I convert an image from RGB to CMYK, I realize that the colors are changing. But if I save the CMYK image once as JPG and once as PDS and open the images, the images have different colors, although in both cases it is the same CMYK image. How do I know which colors await me after printing?

Only Raster Image Processed (RIP) images will print well in CMYK. The cheap home printers are designed for RGB only... if you try to send CMYK, you will get MUD. But if you can get your hands on an very old version of Photoshop (v4.0) your printer may accept CMYK (I think Adobe changed the output algorithm in v5.0 back in the late 1990s) Might be worth a try, although I have not tested this on Windows 10. You might be able to score a free download of Photoshop 4.0 online, but don't be surprised if your computer won't allow you to install it (because of the 64-bit system I think ?) And the printer may not accept it either? Five or so years ago, I found a website that was offering free copies of very old Photoshop (v 4.0 for example) I don't know if Adobe cares about this or not, but why should they? It's obsolete anyway. Like why should Ford care if you get a 25yo Ford car for free? They're not losing any money anyway. Just be careful of viruses, if you go this route.

A good color management tool can achieve the result by control the TAC but keep the lowest LAB tolerance between 2 color spaces. The most important thing is all work he did in Photoshop is unnecessary.

RGB color is color created with light, while CMYK is color created with ink. Everything you see using a monitor or screen display is RGB! The only reason photoshop or any other program allows you to convert a file or image into CMYK is to allow you to retouch the colors to match a printed sample color sheet that all professional commercial printers give you to prepare your color values accordingly for print. The only way you have to see CMYK colors is using a PRINTED REFERENCE from the same commercial printer that will print your file. Like the pantone catalog! You will never ever see CMYK colors display correctly in any monitor that proyects light (not ink!) colors!!!! Monitors use RGB to recreate color. So even when converting a file into CMYK you are still seeing it in RGB using your monitor or screen! Use printed reference to match colors. Always. Also take into consideration type of paper or surface to be printed on and type of printer to be used. Trust me is the only way. The professional way!

woo that did not work Though it is good to know people. Always start off with CMYK first! Basic. Though it is frustrating that PSD does not have an option but this is better than the other version even if my greens are not correct. Good thing it is about the art and not the color for me this time.

In the beginning I thought why turn RGB img to CMYK, if he printed RGB just fine, at the end of the video, I thought so I watched 12min and I still had to pay to find out the prints he showed in the very beginning. I have nothing against selling knowledge, but don't keep it till the end lol Should have read comment first.

What a nonsense this video is. At 3:20 you see the dialogue that you have to use for the conversion from RGB to CMYK. And that's it, you are done!!!! Other thing: at 2:29 he says to turn down those checkboxes. Well, if you do so, you might be heading for a world of pain. Some softwares are not color managed properly and remove the embedded profile reference, and when you reopen such an image with a missing profile in photoshop and you do not get a warning, Photoshop could irreversibly destroy your colors (if the working space is not the same as the image's original color space - which can readily happen if you send such an image to a printshop). This happened to me, and 1000 euros was wasted in printing because even the high-end print shop did not have their photoshop set up for warning in case of missing profiles. A concrete example: you have an image that was made in sRGB. then you edit it in a non-color managed software, the embedded profile reference disappears, and then if your photoshop's working space is set to Adobe RGB, then upon opening the afore-mentioned file in PS you get hideous colours and there is no way back. If you have the missing profiles warning, then upon opening it tells you, hey, profile is missing, and then you can assign the correct sRGB profile and everything is fine.
