Back to the origins, that has something - very nice. I mostly work with plugins (for convenience), but I used to work with layers as well. And with layers, I think you have the best or better control over your photo. Thanks for the video Dave. Have a good one!

Very nice. I have been using Topaz B&W for this for years (I do have a TK8 button for it). I added your process detailed here and also created a TK8 button for it. Easy and with fine control possibilities. Well done Dave!

Wonderful tutorial Dave! I never saw this method before. I've seen the one with the B&W adjustment layer alone, but in combination with the selective color and the channel mixer is new for me. That's why I'm subscribed to your channel.

Thanks Dave, I came up with a similar method using a black and white gradient map with HSL, selective color and color balance layer beneath it. Many ways to do things in PS :-)

I agree with you Peter. There are so many ways of doing things in Photoshop but I love the options.

An interesting addition to BW conversion strategies- I would love to see a segment on toning especially with a nod to controlling tones of whites as well as blacks. Thanks

Thank you for this, Dave. I have the Infinite Color and B&W panels and enjoy the initial randomness of it, but I'm going to dig more into the layers from now on.

Nice conversion process, Dave. I will try it out but with a BW gradient map on the top instead of the curves layer and see what comes of it. Thank you.

Dave, I'm looking for a way to process infrared to black and white. Most people say to do a channel swap with blue and red then go from there. Do you know if this technique would work for an infrared image? Infrared would be composed only of magenta and cyan tones I think. I was going to give this a try using your action but should I do the channel swap part on your channel mixer layer first then work the other layers or just proceed as you have in this video since ultimately what I am working toward is black and white?

I am not sure Phillip I have never worked with infra red photography. I would try to work it the way the layers are stacked and see what results you get. Maybe someone who sees your comment will know the answer and will be able to chime in.

Great tutorial as always. I have added the action to TK8 but find I wish to adjust the sky and foreground independently but encountered a problem running the action. I run the action and apply a mask for the foreground then run the action again but it causes issues with where the masks are within each group. Not sure how to resolve other than generating the second group manually.

Not sure what is going on Roy. The way I use the action is to do the BW Conversion on the entire image and once I have that done I will adjust the image based off of the BW image. You should still be able to work on the sky separately than the rest of the image based on the overall conversion. If you do a separate conversion for the sky you may need to process the image based on the sky and then another version of the image based on the foreground and blend the two different conversions together.

@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Thanks for the response Dave. The issue I was trying to resolve is that when I made adjustments in converting to B&W looking at the foreground I did not like what happened to the sky, and if I adjusted for the sky I did not like the foreground, so thought to convert them independently by using a mask for each, enabling me to adjust the blues and cyans to suit. I have managed to do this by changing the names of the layers before generating the second B&W conversion group. I think your solution is to accept that either the sky or foreground is not what you want and once the B&W conversion has been done just use the result as the starting point for further adjustments, which I need to make with my approach as well.
