Thanks for the awesome videos! Quick question, instead of manually, is there a way of adding my OWN logo to a tshirt as example? The generative tool seems to always use it's own logo or images. If I want my brand logo to be added to a short or car or blanket etc? Or let's say, I have an image of my own dog, I want to add him to a specific background using GF, is it even possible to upload and add all my own images to be merged etc?

The reason the generative fill failed with the wedding photo is because the whole mast wasn’t selected so it just continued the part that was visible behind the veil. It works best if the whole subject is selected

@@photoshopcafe I think this might be the same issue with the group portrait - you did a tight selection around the woman you wanted to remove, there was probably enough details left at the edges to prompt the generator to produce a person there. Maybe making a bigger selection, including a bit of the people you don't want to remove would do better. It should then regenerate the edges of the people you're keeping, and generate background between them.

I have used both tools and Remove Tool is very fast for simple removal of small areas. The generative fill creates complex replacements of objects or fixes details in removal far better just like your results. The only issue is the lower resolution of some of the replacements in Generative Fill not matching my original photo. Again, working in smaller areas helps as you shown here. I did have Generative Fill add jewelry necklace to a portrait, however on magnifying the jewelry the new object was a bit pixelated (blocky) and not smooth, but this was not as noticeable when zoomed out. Once they add a higher res version this should improve. Thanks for demo!

Colin, I have come up with a procedure to remove the lunch thief with generative fill. The trick is to not let AI know there are heads involved. 1. Select the subject. Then remove the lunch thief from the selection. Then use Cntrl X to cut the four who don't want share lunch from the photo and put them in the clipboard. 2. Now select the thief and delete her. 3. Select the empty space and a little of the remaining wall. Use generative fill with no instructions. (Each time I've done this I got a good wall). 4. Use Cntrl V to bring the remaining four back into the picture. 5. The remove tool does a good job of cleaning up any rough edges from the first selection.

A wee gotcha with the Remove tool is that it is hidden in the unused tools side of the Edit Toolbar panel if you use a custom toolbar. Fortunately, there has been so much activity around the Remove Tool and Generative Fill, I know to go look for it. I had a problem with Remove tool that you indirectly helped me fix. I was finding that you can force horizontal and vertical brush strokes with the Shift key, but could not do the touch down at one end, and shift click at the other. That was obviously because I'd missed the Remove After Each Stroke in the Options bar, so thank you for that. In fact for all of the work Jesus and yourself have done on these new features because you are both stand out the best informed with all the best tips and tricks.

This is a great tutorial and it mirrors our experience. We have been using both tools in our agency work and in our NPPE Field classes and we are getting the same results as you have demonstrated. With Gen Fill we usually have to do follow up work and I have found that it works best for files that are going up on the Internet at moderate size. Due to its 1080P limitation we have not had a lot of success when working on files that will be printed at large scale, although in some cases with additional edit work we have been able to use Gen Fill. I must say the Remove Tool is excellent and has replaced the healing brush and clone stamp in our clean up workflow. Can't wait to see Gen Fill go full res.

IHMO it depends. I have not been able to figure out how to use remove tool. I think they both have their place. This lesson helped me with using both tools effectively. The comments are helpful as well. I have been using generative fill to expand my photos. I use the crop tool to add some area. Then Rectangular Marquee the blank with a teensy bit of the photo selected. Then GF with no prompt. Since LLMs work with guess the next pixel they do a remarkable job of adding to the picture. It is a good way to make an iPhone photo into a square for Instagram.

My favourite aspect of the Remove tool is how quick it is. A selected area roughly 110 X 400 pixels, in a 1200 X 800 pixel image, Generative Fill took 10 seconds to do an OK job. Swiping the Remove tool with a single stroke down that same selection, not only gave a better result, it did so near as heck instantaneously. I live in rural NZ so my Internet is not the best, but I still have VDSL2 with 72Mbs down and 12Mbs up. I'd love to know how much of the ten seconds was moving pixels to and from the Adobe servers, and how much was the server based Ai doing its thing.

Great vid. Note as you know Generative fill is greatly influenced by prompt, for me "Remove" prompt works great if it keeps generating stuff I don't want. This also makes generative fill useful when removing, instead of replacing. Ps: despite remove prompt it still generates stuff, only less. Not perfect, but slightly better. Also intresting remove prompt for generative fill is the general description of the area, for example instead of no prompt or "remove" writing "beach" or "photo studio" sometimes works better. Ps2: and as you also did after not perfect results sometimes in complex cases even if one section we are satisfied with its a step toward our goal, select the not that good part and keep generate. (like i like these trees replacing the cabin, but not this ones)

Thanks so much for this information and it is a confirmation of my results. I just couldn't find a way to remove some things with generative fill regardless of selections or prompts, it would just replicate something else. In the end this is no different than some of the other tools, spot removal, healing brush, clone stamp etc, some work in some situations but not in others, hence use another tool! :) I also found that in some cases (removing text from a textured weathered paper ) Generative Fill and the Remove Tool gave me unsightly artifacts and/or removed the texture whereas Content Aware Fill gave me the results I wanted. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and skills!!!!

It is great that you are researching what practical use of these tools/technologies is. I'm wondering why you (and many other people) are using brackets for changing the size of the brush. I like more Control+Opt left-right for size and up-down for hardness. In that case, I don't need to take my hand from the mouse/pen. It is faster. I understand that brackets are here for ages and that this is a habit. I change my habits when I find a better or faster way. This is not a criticism, just a discussion. I'd like to understand your way because I can learn something new. 😀

Sometimes I use the other option, but a bracket key is simple and fast, 1 key. The other option requires 2 keys and to physically press and drag your mouse, that's 3 actions compared to one.

The Generative tool seems to be improving on its own. In May I couldn’t keep the feathers straight while removing sticks in front of a snowy egret. In June I could. One day maybe next year the Generative tool will announce we are all its prisoners, and we will be forced to work in its huge crime organization as scammers.

Thank you for pointing out the resolution disparity caused by generative fill at this point in time which is understandable, I suppose, since it is consistent with the low resolution of - as far as I am aware - all the AI image engines and which, will naturally cause potentially serious complications when input into a higher resolution original image. This, it seems to me, makes it, for all practical purposes at this point in its development a useless, inherently problematic function. Basically, more trouble than it is worth until it is able - perhaps via a per instance subscription fee - to, once it produces a satisfactory result at low res for us to then opt for a final, complimentary high resolution version of "the real McCoy". Or, until Adobe incorporates it into the on computer program like the remove tool. Would you agree with my assessment?

I feel like these videos about these tools would be better served by demonstrating practical use-cases. The repetitive use of examples where the literal subject of a photograph is removed altogether…it’s (a) use case for making a clean plate for videos where one wants to cause the subject to “appear” or to create parallax movement. But most folks want to add padding around a subject, or Re-create a sliver of shoe that didn’t make it into a full body shot

Colin: wonderful video. I have once more learned a lot from you! I have one question though, resulting from trying things out with my own pictures. Not so rarely, generative fill insists on replace the person I want to remove by another. It not only does this if I leave the prompt empty, but also if I make it explicit in the prompt, that I do not want to see a new person, but just the background of the picture. I have tried out multiple prompts (like "no person", "only background", or longer versions of them), to no avail. Do you have any suggestion how to fix this? I can often use the remove tool instead, but do then need to use the (normally less precise) brush, rather than the lasso tool.

The Generative fill doesnt work on the wedding photo because you use the wrong prompt. If you write, "remove tower" it does a perfect job...

Well, no winner here, just two useful tools, depending on the situation. If someday the Remove Tool could use the cloud, well, the result would be even better in such complex situations where you tried to get rid of big areas. We are living incredible times BTW. I'm not a photographer, but just an enthusiast, and this sort of AI tricks work like magic!

Thank you. Have you compared the background given by "Generative Fill" with the same area on Google "Street view"?

Thank you Colin. What parameters do I need to make my pc handle the generative fill/denoise faster? One image takes about 7 mins to denoise!

A faster internet for Gen Fill. Faster GPU for nr off the top of my head. Nr will get faster though, it's a very early beta

Do you think that the Generative fill is learning more and more as the bata version is used by so many people? And if so do you think it will be in the full version with in a year? Liked the Video by the way.

From what I've unofficially heard, the beta users aren't training the ai, that would violate the Adobe stock rule. Where its all trained from images Adobe has the rights to.
