I've always loved how for every end result, there are at least a dozen ways to get there. A decade ago I was tutoring, and taught a method using poster edges, stylize-> diffuse-> anisotropic, more blur, unsharp mask to get the hand drawn effect. :)

Nice job. Simpler technique than I'd seen elsewhere. In future tutorials, you might want to mention workarounds for those who do not have the Oil Paint filter in their older version of Photoshop.

Of all photoshop tutorials I've watched over the years... this one may well be the coolest. :)

I was taught that an artist is only as good as their reference. Because of this, I build my illustrations with composites of reference photos (personally taken as well as found online). This is my absolute FAVORITE method for turning my composites into line drawings to then print the line drawing out to apply value patterns as well as try different color palettes.

Fascinating work. Remarkable detail. The pundit is here to stay and teach and reach the masses.

Damn man this is something i was in search for about three years ago, i would call it the GTA5-effect, did it, took me several hours and hours of experimenting and in the end I got there, but now I see this, and how easy in comparison to my technique, damn, next time a little quicker please with such tuts, LOL. More straightforward and easy to follow than most. You really keep the techniques to a minimum. Most other tutorials would have you doing a dozen different menu drops to achieve the same things and it just gets too convoluted. Great job! Subscribed!

I can't turn my threshold into oil painting. :( It's greyed out.

That would make for a great photoshop action! I did not know about the threshold's ability to adjust the lines, I use the lines filter all the time, but never knew there was a way to fix the white or black, now I know, thanks for a great tutorial!

I'm running the latest update of photoshop, when I go to filter stylize oil paint is grayed out. What could it be?

If you left the figure and the background as seperate layers you could then do different line weights and line colors and change the saturation between the two. You'd be able to seperate the the foregraound figure from the background much more. Plus do lighting effects between the two layers.

I had to play with Adobe Elements way back before I got Photoshop to learn this ( no tutorials back then ) but you showed me how to improve it to look even better than I was able to do.
