Just a quick video to demonstrate several different options for tying up a tarp if a grommet has come out of the tarp. Great knowledge to have for camping.

most people don't realize that a toggle on the back side of the gromet takes away about 2/3 of the stress on the gromet, tying through the eyelet is fast but shortens life of tarps, they just don't make stuff as well as they used to. thanx for the video and best wishes

Another great video, I'd like to add one more south Florida hint. Crumple up leaves into a small ball and use like in the rock method. Green leaves work better than older leaves.

Practical tips that take the worry out of camping with tent or tarp. This reminded me of a wilderness first aid course where we were faced with carrying an injured person out of the woods. We used jackets with poles through the sleeves and the jackets zipped up. There wondered if the zipper would pull apart and worried how we might get the person out after that, but this method would certainly have worked. Incredible knowledge in this video, thanks Lonnie.

There's 2 methods I used multiple times. This is because I've used tarps as a roof over an area and didn't have much angle, so rain fills up in it and pulls down hard or a strong wind situation will rip out there original grommet holes. I've always used a rock or cut a piece of wood, and yes, I did know to have no sharp edges/corners on them.

Real practical on the spot remedies to a very prevalent problem where i live we get force ten gales hurricanes coming straight off theatlantic ocean ive seen most temp structures disintegrate leave a camp destroyed in its aftermath one time only three tents left standing out of 150 several hoop tents having been rollerballed bounced over low wall and the freefall into the sea off cliffs before the occupants had chances to pitch it or take shelter under it moments like that these hints come in real practical for uk tarping is largely a woodland activity as the winds in exposed places would hammer any tarp unless very cleverly arranged on open moorland often nothing to fix too Also so i go for low cut design tent solo apliniste style windshedder tent sealed by a skirt or multiple guys wedge shape with lower edge leading into wind unless it changes of cse which it does frequently here predominantly s westerlies here often a lee gets you out of it

Good options. Another one is a variation of your last technique and that is to tie a sheet bend with the bunched up portion of the tarp and the cordage. To help prevent the grommets from pulling out, you can use shock cord or a bungee cord for your guy out lines. This will give the tarp some flexibility when a big gust of wind blows or someone trips over a stake.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 10 жыл бұрын
bwillan The sheet bend seems like it should work great though I personally have never tried it. The bungee is also a great idea. I try to camp where the wind isn't much of a problem but you can't always have the perfect camp site.

Thanks Lonnie. You know, a good complete grommet kit wouldn`t go amiss. the better ones come with a punch and heavy anvil to hammer on. Also, good tarps are worth a lot in these situations. Dang the cost, because the lousy blue tarps are like throwing pearls to swine. They`re pure junk. Much better to bite the bullet and go for heavy duty thick tarps. You`ll know the better ones generally by their colors- silver and black is what I look for. Even heavy duck or canvas is better, once you waterproof them. Very expensive, but they just may last a half a lifetime with care. One tip: protect your good tarps from gnawing vermin like squirrels, mice and rats.

1fanger I have two different grommet sets myself. (different sized grommets). In fact the tarp used in this video has two grommets that I added to it because it did not come with enough from the factory for my purposes. I agree, those cheap thin blue tarps really aren't worth much. I borrowed one from a friend of mine to be able to haul my moose home inside my vehicle and it leaked blood through. Fortunately the surface underneath wasn't critical and can be removed to launder.

Great tips, Lonnie! I've used the rock trick a few times but never the toggle you showed at first. Mind you, I tie my tarps a bit differently with a ridgeline and such, and I reinforce the grommet points with additional fabric (even the existing ones get redone this way). I've had to make do with those cheap blue poly tarps for years and they're pretty awful unless they're all you have. I'm still waiting for a couple of nylon tarps from China because not a lot of Canadian stores sell good ones, or they're just way too expensive (like $60 to $100 and 1.5x that for SilNylon). Even to make my own was looking crazy expensive at about $65 for an 8x10.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 10 жыл бұрын
Alberta Bushcrafter Yes they are expensive for sure. I put in grommets at a couple points on this tarp. I put a little circle of sheet rubber on each side of the tarp before installing the grommet through it all. Probably very similar to what you did.

It reliable in combatting any thrown at you conds can be pegged down tight as a drum in extreme conds has inherent strength my tents offer snow valance and air ventilation tubes if im in mountainous terrain for many years i used a double apole ridge tent im now using a french designed alpinistes high alt tent made by quecha chamonix chamberey way the fabric absorbs uv rays upping interior temps in cold weather its interior goes up at same time as you pitch 3poles on exterior suspend it clips very simple on outside ensure its perfectly tensioned every time you pitch it goes up in 3-5mins fully pegged out has window side pockets on interior double enterance and mosquito netting either enterances wedged shaped to combat katabatic winds of high mts ideal for one two as a squeeze 3in any emergency! Completely protects you from all inclement conds knowing the extreme weather
@6brettes
@6brettes 9 жыл бұрын
Rapid changes in my parts a tarp is a rare summertime treat most persons choose tents because of their ability to handle all known conds which is the kind of security you want when heading out not knowing whats ahead on the weatherfront sides of things? I find it best to be prepared for all conds in any season as natures got a way of throwing you quite a few surprises! Its no fun being caught out with inadequate kit to combat whats being thrown at you for long durations of time drenched wet through uncomfortable miserable for days in yer feet or breeches clothes have a chill permenant due draughty conds when resting you must conserve your heat as heat equals energy which is food which cuz yer pakn that in on your back most times is finite wind rain rob you of warmth a draughty shelter is no good if your out in it a long time
@6brettes
@6brettes 9 жыл бұрын
The drainages properties of the soil your on is all important if selecting a hollow cuz ive seen persons set up a flysheet or tarp over one thumbing their noses at rest of us out in the exposed open refuting the fact it will fill cuz theyve protected it from above? However the surrounding soils have gathered in the water seeped it straight in under their tarp from the sidewalls once saturation point is reached? No places in hollow in my region is good to place yself for any length of time but as temp wind relief in dryish weather passing showers their ok
@6brettes
@6brettes 9 жыл бұрын
Yes dips do offer wind relief from many wind directions as tends to flow over terrain sufaces missing out the hollows however they are no good in my region if the weather is persistently raining which it often is ive seen many persons head for a hollow to get out the winds to find themselves waterlogged hours later as they can act like a water catchment sump or pool water once surrounding earth reaches its saturation point i use them only if weather is windy but never wet cuz once youve chosen to go into one on featureless terrain with not many options for shelter from anything elses ive seen peoples miserable as hell three days later in bad weather up past their ankles in poolied water vowing never to use a dip or hollow ever again it all depends on the type of weather and type of soil your on i imagine up a mountain
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 9 жыл бұрын
david john Huxtable This gets back to local knowledge. In our area, dips are good to camp in but if it is a very large dip then you dont want to be at the bottom but up a little ways or it could get pretty damp.
@6brettes
@6brettes 9 жыл бұрын
I imagine half way up a mountain in a woods in well draining soils this prob wouldnt be such a problem but im adding just a note of caution regarding hollows though i have come across an 80ft deep bog sump of extremely boggy ground in a forest halfway up a mountain before
@6brettes
@6brettes 9 жыл бұрын
If persistent ok in a hollow if passing showers n windy but to stay there long term is a no no esp in inclement weather ive learnt to avoid them if rain keeps up for longer than 2hours! Otherwise you will be requiring your flippers n snorkel rubber duck rather than tarp sleeping bag etc which will be a sodden mess if you ever decide to sleep out in one during badvweather it all depends on drainages of the soils beneath you how good they are at dissipating

A tarp can have more uses than a tent and is a very very useful handy multi purpose bit of kit but its uses as far as i am concerned are restricted to either woodland or lowland camping in treeline anywhere elses i prefer a tent for the vagaries in the weather conds which these days can often be unpredictably extreme with little warning the fickle nature of weather in my region we can often exp 4seasons in one day very changeable a tent can deal weatherproofness during all conds

Like i said a tarp is predominantly most suited to woodland camp or temperate forest environments where i live its comfort or weather resistances would be sorely tested by the buffeting winds driving rain and extreme conds plus lack of trees on higher grounds i agree that they do enable you to watch the stars twinkle ot see the fire wildlife whilst residing under them and have numerous flexible configurations like low lying capability in high winds or other but if the weather turns nasty give me a tent to seal it out any day no draughts or flapping bouncing of an tarp loss of heat or still air by its inability to create still air during driving winds cold or rain?
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 9 жыл бұрын
david john Huxtable I camp in woodlands probably 90% of the time. But even in the alpine where I camp sometimes, a person can put up a tarp in dips in the land that are sheltered by brush to protect from the wind.
@6brettes

The excess water created by even a heavy passing shower a few days ago in my region because of global warming changes in out atmosphere ie unusual weather patterns are now the norm and over one months supply of water fell in less than one hour that equates to several inches just dropping out the sky right over above you so these days i tend to avoid hollows in you got the option of staying longer if the ground beneath you is stillmfirm or dry in a hollow in my region they can oust you out of your position rapidly when they start filling up like a sink after youve set your kit up in one? Not knowing how long its gna keep up rain for?

Hi I'm new to this channel and think it is awesome but I have two questions 1. Do you really live in a tent in Alaska? 2. In this video, once you tied the knot with the rock where do you place them

Matthew Kijowski No my wife and I don't live in a tent though we do live in Alaska. We do have a remote Alaska Cabin though on a small lake that we have all to ourselves. That is our get-away cabin. We however LIVE in a regular house on the road system although quite rural. I don't understand what you are asking about the knot and tarp. I do have another video that might answer your question though as I use the same method to configure and stake out a canvas tarp in that video. The video is called.......Canvas Tarp Tent On The Cheap

Tom F Well I'm not sure what YOU would call low cost. "Campmor" sells nylon tarps similar to mine for reasonable cost. I got my tarp from "Sportsman's Warehouse" here in the USA. Don't know if you would have located near you or not but Campmor is online so products can be ordered from them. If weight is not an issue then the heavy duty poly tarps from Wal-Mart or other stores are pretty versatile for a reasonable cost
