Phthalo blues, turquoises and greens are such happy colours; I always have at least one of them in my palette. I have so many things that have been permanently stained by them! 😂

I am still using my tube of DS Phthalo Blue. It is not labeled as green shade or red shade. The pigment number is the same as the Phthalo Blue (Green Shade). I use it most often to mix with Hansa Medium Yellow to make a vibrant green which is the same color as our grass on a sunny day. If I want to tone it down a bit, I can mix in a touch of Quin Red.

I absolutely love PB16 Phthalo Turquoise, Schmincke's helio is nice, but Holbein has a PB16 that leans a bit more green, and Daniel Smith just added a PB16 that is super intense. I think it's my favorite blue for a primary trio with PV19 and PY150 for florals and foliage. Thanks for the comparison of all these pthalos :)

manganese blue isn't toxic by itself, but the byproducts made when it's created are! that's why it was discontinued.

Thanks, Teoh, for this video :-). Regarding PB15:4, Maimari Blue has a Phthalo Turquoise made of PB15:4. It is greenish turquoise hue, more green than PB16. I have not used it myself but I have seen samples of it online, I think on Jane Blundell’s website.

Great video as usual 😁 another phthalo color available out there is Winsor&Newton 's Aqua Green, made of "Palomar Turquoise" (proprietary pigment). It's a dark teal color in masstone that looks turquoise when diluted. One of my favorite colors in my current palette.

Thank you for doing these videos as in the Pthalo watercolors (with several different kinds) leans green, leans yellow, leans red (but just need certain one) but when do searching it can get confusing quickly and the companies #’s PB15.1,2,3 don’t always add the number behind the PB15 so getting lil tube as love using Pthalo colors but red shade like ultramarine & can add red myself if want to do so! Tyvm!

Thank you for swatching these, Teoh:) I think that DS Manganese Blue Hue and Phtalo Blue (Red Shade) would be lovely to add to the palette coz they look like such great colours for the sky.

Thank you for these videos. I use White Nights phalto colors because of their price. They are also pretty good, I am not very picky when it comes to phalto colors. They are very similar across different brands 💙

I love Phthalo Blue Red Shade. It's a palette staple for me since I purchased it. I use Phthalo colors a lot lately and with a bit of mixing a Phthalo Blue can look similar to an Ultramarine Blue. But I really prefer the Daniel Smith Phthalo Green over the Schmincke Horadam one. I had some issues with their half pan version too.

I also love mixing the two colors for a wide variety of turquoise/teals. For a bright teal, I'll add a bit of yellow and white. I particularly love Pthalo blue red shade and have it in my main palette. For Pthalo Green I love Pthalo Green Yellow shade. Both have a glow to them that just is sooo pretty to me when I use them in galaxy/nebula paintings. I also got some pigment powder of this from Kremer and made my own stash so I won't have to keep buying tubes.

Out of all the watercolors I paint with, the Blue hues are my favorite. Pink is a close second.

I quite like some phthalo colours, a blue-shaded phthalo green suits my style well and phthalo blues make for good skies as long as the heavy staining isn't a problem (for lifting clouds, for example)

I fell in love with Phthalo Blue when I was learning oil paints in class. I have my tube of DS but I havent even made much of a dent in it with how few blue things I paint. Hope I can set aside time after exams to do more watercolour paintings

There's also PB17, pthalocyanine cyan, which is a nearly perfect hue of cyan, however it is VERY difficult to find, most paint manufacturers have discontinued the usuage of that pigment and reformulated with mixtures.... but it's still out there, I have a few tubes 🤫
@olgahein43844 жыл бұрын
With Schmincke that was replaced with 'Heliocerulian', the PB15:3. Because it's nearly perfect Cyan. The only one even closer is PB15:3 with PW4 (zink oxide), by the name Heliocerulian hue. That's what PB17 would look like, I think. It's not the best mixing color, thanks to the white pigment though. Haaah, whenever a grea and useful pigment is discontinued (either by art supply manufacturers or pigment factories etc) it's such a loss. Same story with quinacridone gold.

Very interesting video. For my split primary Daniel Smith palette, I went with the following choices (reflecting their 'essentials' set, if I remember correctly): Warm side: French Ultramarine - PB29 Pyrrol Scarlet - PR255 New gamboge - PY97, PY110 Cool side: Phtalo Blue - PB 15:3 Quina Rose - PV19 Hansa Yellow Light - PY3 I added these two earth colors: Natural Sienna - PBr7 Burnt Umber - BBr7 I'm still discovering new ways to use these colours! That's one of the nice things of watercolor painting, all this experimentation. I love it!
@PaulaBean4 жыл бұрын
Oh BTW, I use the Natural Sienna often for skin tones.

I will substitute French Ultramarine with Phtalo Blue (red shade). I don't like granulation at the moment.

All your videos are helpful, but this one is especially great. I have been wondering about Schmincke's PB 15:1... to me it looks in between their other two in terms of warmth. Interesting how Schmincke's 15:3 is so different than Daniel Smith's. I recently bought the Schmincke PB 16 Helio Turquoise and it is my favorite shade here on its own. Can't wait to try it more.
@PaulaBean4 жыл бұрын
5:22 a non-granulating alternative for ultramarine, just what I was looking for! Thanks.
@olgahein43844 жыл бұрын
Or you can just use the Ultramarine finest by Schmincke. They just mill the pigments to the point that you can only see the granulation with a microscope. Unless DS is more affordable for you, then that color is a perfect fit.

Phthalo blue RS is a little less red and darker at the same saturation as ultramarine blue so it has its own character. It’s almost closer to indanthrone blue. A lot of hobby paint manufacturers use it as the base pigment for painting space marines...
@EstrafaDC4 жыл бұрын
Hi Teoh! Thank you for the video. You should try out Daniel Smith's Pthalo Turquoise. It's PB16 as well. I've used it and like it -- although after comparison I use Winsor & Newton's Pthalo Turquoise on my palette as I like it just a little better.

That Phthalo Blue Red Shade. I say it's a gorgeous alternative to Ultramarine.💙 Also, When I think of it, I think most "Viridians" are Phthalo Green. Not sure if the name Viridian has more appeal to me than Phthalo Green. Also, oil painter Bob Ross used Phthalo colors on his paintings.

Just add Lemon Yellow or Hansa Yellow to Phthalo Blue and you can get a cool green. So Phthalo Green is not really necessary.

I find that Phthalo green from Schmincke is not so good for glazing, I wish I could use it as a underlying colour, but it always reactivates!
