Many people plotting their careers have difficulty deciding between becoming a physician assistant or a nurse practitioner. Both these occupations have fantastic job prospects and income potential. They are also both highly respected and trusted occupations. They both require years of education. Base salaries are almost identical for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. In 2019, Physician Assistants had a base salary of $112,410. Nurse Practitioners had a base salary of $111,840, only $570 lower than Physician Assistants. Both in 2019 were significantly outearned by Nurse Anaesthetists, who earned a staggering $181,040 as a base salary. Both did outearn: Nurse-Midwives: $108,810, Occupational Therapists: $86,210, Physical Therapists: $90,170
Not only are the salaries very similar in 2019, but they have also been almost identical for some time. In 2012, physician assistants earned more. From 2013-2018, nurse practitioners earned more. Meanwhile, for nurse practitioners, a staggering 50% job growth is expected from 2019 to 2029. Both are hot fields, but nurse practitioners are expected to see greater job growth.
