Video of the experiment to determine the Young's Modulus of a metal wire using a travelling microscope.
Try the data analysis yourself, download a free worksheet here: physicshq.wixsite.com/alevelp...
Perfect if you're learning physics at home.
Video 2 has the analysis of the results: • Young's Modulus Experi...
Relevant concepts: Young's modulus, stress, strain, metal wire, micrometer, and travelling microscope.
Experiments with materials, like this one, are mandatory practicals for many physics specifications. So this is good practice for OCR physics A, AQA A-Level physics, Edexcel A-Level physics, CPAC, PAG, practical endorsement.

Thanks man, clear practical and the important parts we're easily audible, just the parts you were mumbling to yourself were not perfectly clear but i don't think they were necessary to the practical so I'm not fussed. :)

😂 thanks! At present I am working on a worksheet to accompany this practical which I hope to have ready fairly soon. I hope it’ll prove useful. And your helpful comment spurs me on!

how did you write the stress and strain on the result table, im confused
@PhysicsHQ
@PhysicsHQ Ай бұрын
I wrote extension values. Stress and strain are calculated values - they are calculated from extension, mass, area etc.

What is the purpose of conducting the experiment?

From this experiment we can find the Young’s modulus of the material (aka elastic modulus) which measures the material stiffness.

Can u mention the procedure of this exp

HI. Sorry if the procedure wasn't clear in my video. If there is a point that I could further clarify I am happy to do so - just let me know what's not clear. Or did you mean that you'd some step by step instructions written out?

Hi. Here are some bullet point steps: • The original length of the test wire is measured using a metre rule from the point of support to the zero on the vernier scale/marker. • The diameter is found, using a micrometer, at various points along its length and an average diameter is calculated. Cross-sectional area is found using πd²/4. • Loads are then placed gently on the wire and the extension of the wire is measured for each one using the vernier scale arrangement / traveling microscope. • After each reading the load should be removed to check that the wire returns to its original length, showing that its elastic limit has not been reached. • Extension measurements are also taken when gradually unloading the masses to give two readings. This allows an average value for the extension to be calculated. • A graph of stress against strain is plotted. The gradient of the straight-line region gives the Young modulus (= stress / strain). • N.B. The wires should be long and thin to give as large an extension as possible for a given load while retaining its elastic properties.
