One of the foremost French composers of his generation and an inspiration for many more after him, Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)'s music is often described as the bridge between Romanticism and 20th century modernism. Not only is he known for his mélodies and Requiem, he also boasts a repertoire of enigmatic works written for piano - simple in expression, yet complicated in technique.
Aptly illustrating this characteristic is his set of pièces brevès. Initially written as a sight-reading exercise for students at the Paris Conservertoire (where he had taught), each piece contrasts one another in mood. We bring to you today the set's fifth piece, which is characterised by moods that change at whim, challenging the performer to enhance its rich cantabile line through hints of improvisation.
