The Pi1541 (Commodore 1541 emulator for the Raspberry Pi) can be instructed to create NEW blank D64/G64 disk images directly from BASIC on your Commodore 64 or 128. Today I'll show you how!

That is an easy fix. Email me and I will send you v1.25 firmware. I should also update the website with your suggestions, thanks.

A most informative video! Many thanks. Would you know if there is a way to configure the Pi1541 so that .prg files located on the SDCard do not show with as '"SAMPLE.PRG" PRG' when viewing the directory in browser mode? It would be nice if the Pi541 could remove the .PRG from the file name when browsing & viewing the SD Card directory with FB64.

Thank you for the comment! I don't know of any such setting. At the same time, I rarely ever view the directory in Browser Mode, because the truncation to 16-character file names is less useful and informative than simply browsing the directory on the Pi1541's OLED screen. From a quick test, it seems as though standalone PRG files require the .PRG extension in order for the Pi1541 to recognise them as such for the purpose of *mounting* them into Emulation Mode. Unmounted extensionless PRGs will load in Browser Mode using the LOAD command, but that's to be avoided, since Browser Mode is limited to using the default slow KERNAL routines (and trying to load a PRG in Browser Mode with a fast-loader enabled will probably just freeze your computer). -- JC

You could also easily create new disks wit dirmaster - but still only on pc.

Indeed! On PC, DirMaster by Style is a good alternative to VICE for making blank 1541 disk images *if* you only want D64s... my understanding is that its support for G64 is limited to reading existing files. -- JC

Did this capability break in v1.25 firmware? I followed your exact same steps (making sure I am in browser mode) and I do NOT get a new disk image created. At first I thought it may have been JiffyDOS getting in the way since it is not 100% browse mode compatible but I still had the trouble after disabling it. It is as if I did not issue the command. Not even a flash from the drive activity light. Strange. My pi1541 is currently assigned as device 9 which I specified in the command.

Hi, I just tried following your suggestions on creating a blank with my pi2541. It creates a d64 all right, but I found that when I enter the emulation mode and create a simple basic code eg. 10 print “hello” I get an error ?syntax error in 0. Can you check and see if you get similar results? Ps: I have found a work around when the error shows after typing run for line 0 just type 0 followed by return and do the same when 665 comes up type 665 followed by return. After these faults have been eliminated the disk image seems to be working as normal.

I have created many D64s on my Pi1541, and never encountered the behaviour you describe. In your example, you're entering line 10, but receiving a syntax error in 0 -- so the computer thinks there is a BASIC program in RAM with an erroneous line 0, and thus never reaches line 10. I cannot fathom why issuing the N0 command to create a disk image would suddenly make a BASIC program appear in memory, but your workaround suggests you're getting the same line numbers consistently. I would personally LIST the program out of curiosity to see what is there. Regardless, the NEW command would probably be a faster way of eliminating the lines for new program entry, rather than deleting them individually. :) -- JC

That’s because you had a directory listing in memory before you entered your basic program. Just type type new and press return to clear the memory before entering any basic programs, or do as you did and remove the lines one by one afterwards. 🙂 (You can also avoid this by using a fast loader or similar that allows you to list disk directories without storing them in memory) Edit: I found out by doing the same mistake 🙂
