I've mentioned before the importance of learning to sing. Today we cover that topic in even more depth with this excerpt from my Mendelssohn Op. 19 No 4 course. Learning to play with "vocal inflection" and phrase as a vocalist would is key to transforming your playing from rhythmic monotony into beautiful, lyric performance.

@@JoeLinux2000 That was a topic in one of my private lessons this past week! I have a student learning Schumann's Traumerei and we needed to work on creating phrase without taking time, because the time taken was too much and too out of context.

It really does make such a difference, “singing” the line. The first playthrough sounded like a boringly played hymn; the second - with the inflection - I didn’t even realize I’d paused what I was doing until it was over! It’s the expression that makes one stop and listen.

I'm a big fan of Shirley Kirsten who uses this approach. www.youtube.com/@ShirleyKirsten/videos Unfortunately she needs to replace the hammers on her piano which have become way too hard.

I know you saw a bit of this same topic on the latest livestream, but ironically, I had already filmed this and the entire course before doing that stream!
