💫 This piece was originally titled Stéphane Stomp and was composed by Andre Dedjean in the 1960s. It later turned into a Gypsy Jazz classic known as Swing Gitan through the performances of Angelo Debarre. Did I ever mention that his stellar rendition of La Gitane was my first time hearing Gypsy Jazz? (It became my first piano Manouche arrangement back in 2015!) I’m really grateful for that magical moment of discovery, and I suppose this arrangement of Swing Gitan is my humble salute to him.
🌸A request: according to my KZfaq analytics, a lot of the people who have interacted with my videos are not subscribed to my channel. I’d reaaaally appreciate it if you can subscribe and help my channel grow. There will be much more videos and projects to come!
📝A little about this arrangement:
Shortly after I arranged La Gitane in 2015, I came across Swing Gitan but I never got the chance to arrange it. Maybe it was because I was still new to the Gypsy Jazz party, I didn’t possess the adequate imagination or vocabulary to transform it into a piano piece, especially since most of the piece is founded in improvisation/licks. I think that it’s thanks to my work on my recent Manouche arrangements that I felt ready to endeavor on Swing Gitan, and I decided to make it glamorously acrobatic haha! If you can’t tell, I adore octaves!

NB: The piano I’m playing has extremely heavy keys as it lacks the regular maintenance, it’s not the best for heavy duty pieces like Swing Gitan, but we did our best!
🌸After publishing my last videos, I received wonderful emails of support from so many of you. I will turn the next part into a little “blog entry” and perhaps I may receive some echo again!
I’ll call it -
💭A penny for my thoughts:
Where I live, there are never any Jazz jams, Gypsy jazz sessions, or anything close to improvisation with other musicians. I learnt to improvise entirely on my own (because I started as a classical pianist). Even though I start the work on my Gypsy jazz piano arrangements with improvisation, I end up finalizing all the notes since my targets are to produce videos for KZfaq, and to transcribe all the notes. Knowing my notes would really help the process. (Or do Classical habits die hard…?)
Do Gypsy Jazz musicians do the same when they will record/perform? Do they have most of their licks planned out? I catch myself being increasingly curious about such things. I also feel compelled to start playing live with other musicians, because I want to get used to taking the back seat and doing more accompaniment. Plus, I’m sure the exchange of energies in the same space is something wonderful. I’m positive that one day the time for that will come. Anyway, thanks for reading this far. I hope you’ve enjoyed this video!
Cheers
Pat🍀

"Stéphane Stomp" by Dedjean, Masselier & Beaume later became known as "Swing Gitan" is composed by André (Petitjean) Dedjean along with Alphonse "Totol" Masselier (double bass player that played with Django) and André Beaume who wrote the lyrics.

Thank you very much for sharing this information. Frankly, I had to search thoroughly about the origins of the music, and also found Dedjean’s name on a Django forum/website. I was however unable to find any recordings or notation online confirming that or the piece’s original name... Upon asking a friend who is a GJ guitarist, Debarre, who has performed it many times, was confirmed. My arrangement is also inspired by his wonderful renditions. Please feel free to share any further links you may have🙏🏻

Echoing your thoughts about improvisation, like you I was trained as classical pianist or concert pianist and much time was spent on which edition to use and how notated music had to be interpreted. And I definitely agree which the choice of edition as you want to get as close as how the composer wrote down his music. However, spending too much time on metronome marks, how long a trill has to be is only relevant if the interpreter wants to re-create how the piece of music was played at the time it was composed. But then, what about the instrument? Unless you play the piece on a historic instrument, it wouldn't sound the same anyway. There are so many other layers than just the notation. What if Bach had access to a modern Steinway? Would his pieces still be the same? Also, comparing classical pianists just throughout the 20th century, it feels like concert pianist in recent years are technically far more advanced than some of the most famous names. But I still enjoy most of the less advanced pianists born at the beginning of the 20th century more than today's. Also, if you give a Henle Urtext edition to a dozen of pianists at any time (whether now or 100 years ago), you will get 12 different interpretations. And who says that the composer's version is always best? Sometimes transcriptions or arrangements like yours are much more enjoyable.

Thank you very much for exchanging your thoughts on this matter. I couldn’t agree more! Moreover, the fear of interpreting what we think is correct wins over the enjoyment, individuality and rawness of music.

Apologies for rambling on, but you really hit a nerve as I think it's holding back the joy of music. Like a famous once replied to a critic who didn't like his tempi: "so what, it really doesn't matter". Who is the authority whether something is correct or good? Another pet hate of mine is the distinction between "professional" and "amateur". Luckily, with the advance of online gaming this has somewhat been tuned down. But thirty years ago "amateur" was considered as derogatory as nowadays "gypsy" is in some cultures. It's like saying all parents are "amateurs" in childcare, or it's just their "hobby". I think the "correct" way of playing music and the derogatory attitude towards "amateur" musicians in the 19th century are closely linked. And the conflicts you are describing are deeply rooted in the split of "classical" and "jazz" music. Jazz music just like folk music doesn't rely on writing down every note, so it varies from one interpretation to the other. It's playful and maybe that's why it's considered to be "less"? But I would argue against that and say every performance even of a classical trained pianist can widely vary from concert to concert. And how many recordings are there where pianists have changed their tempi when they recorded the music again 30 years later.

Historically, a musician was someone who created music - improvised or composed. It was the basic prerequisite to be called a musician! Yet through time, and Western influences, the musician’s defining skill mutated into memorizing a set of pre-existing notes off of paper as the ultimate skill. It is sad, that an overwhelming number of classically trained musicians - even professionals, would be unable to compose their own music, or play tunes by ear; while ask any professional jazz pianist to play a classical piece, and they would find/guess their way on the keys. Society, with its seeking of perfection and rigid rules, lost the essence of what it truly means to practice music. Thank you very much for the stirring of thoughts!😊

@@Pat_pianooo I just red your response to one of your commentators.... I personnaly think that without a solid basis ( and it's true in every field) improvisation finds very fast it's limits even if you're creative, and naturally skilled, etc... It's a bit like " education" if you have none, maybe you'll find your way out, but it'll take much longer and above all you might live all your life with doubts and stress. I love musicians who dare to do as they feel, but it they don't have a solid basis to refer to, very soon things won't come out to brilliant.

It would be Manouche if you replace the straddle with something more staccato, copying what the rhytm section (rythm guitars bass/drums) play. Straddle playing can never be Manouche, and never should be, so you approach this incorrectly.
@Pat_pianooo
@Pat_pianooo 27 күн бұрын
Hello! Thanks for the comment. I am not straddling any of the left hand accompaniment, unless you mean stride? The piece is called Swing Gitan, so I tried to play it with the traditional swing accompaniment. Moreover, the piano is not a pluck instrument, so the staccato effect you hear on the stringed instruments cannot be achieved on the piano. My whole aim is to make the wonderful music available to solo pianists.
