There can be a number of different reasons why piano keys will make a clicking sound. One of the easiest things to fix is loose piano whippen flange screws if this is the cause of the clicking. This video demonstrates how to diagnose and fix the problem. Tightening the piano whippen flange screws is actually one of the piano regulation steps.

Hi Steve, Thanks for the help first of all. I was noticing a clicking sound in my upright piano whenever the hammer would hit the strings. I took the action out and started pushing up the hammers to see if I could get them to click, and I noticed that on several of them the clicking sound occurs when the hammer returns back to the resting position. I do not think the head is loose as when I rotate it it doesn't move, but the rattling sound seems to come from below near the jack. Any ideas?

I'm restoring an 1898 Mason & Hamlin upright, and my clicking noises came from the hammer butt felts falling off and the jacks hitting the hammer butts.

Hello! I have an old piano that ONE key says click... But it's one of my favorite keys. And it can't be this reason because when I hold my finger over the strings and play the key there's no clicking sound. So it has to do with the strings somehow.. Any suggestion?

Uneven spacing and crooked hammers indicate a need to service the action. If your tuner didn't alert you to this you may want to consider getting another one.

Hi, Steve I have a piano, But instead of clicking noises It buzzes. Sounds like its coming from behind the action. What are somethings that can cause buzzing.

Hi Connor, Yes, buzzing is another problem that pianos can have. There are a number of different things that can cause a buzzing noise. It could be that there are cracks in the soundboard that are causing the buzzing or cracks in the bridges. It also could be that the ribs are separated. It's possible that there are loose case screws so you could check all of the visible screws to see if any of them are loose. Sometimes it's as simple as something sitting on top of the piano that is vibrating. These are some things to check.

Keyboards can make clicking noises, but it's usually for a different reason. I haven't had a chance to work with keyboards that much, so I'm not really sure what the causes can be for clicking noises in keyboards.

One of my C-keys makes a weird noise where it mute itself instant after its sound... How can i fix that

It sounds like there is something wrong with the damper. Without seeing it, it could be that the damper needs adjusted, or it may mean the damper lever is broken. You should be able to see if the damper isn't lifting when the note is played like it should.

Hi Steve, I got a problem. I got an upright piano which make clacking noise (it is more than just clicking in this video) after releasing a key. When you push down the key it is normal but in the way back when you release the key it makes that clacking noise. What can be reason? Thanks a lot

Hi Mehran, There could be a number of different things that could cause this. I would usually start by taking the key out to see if there were something under the key that it was landing on that would make the noise. It also could be something in the action. Sometimes the bridle wire will be hitting the backcheck wire on the note next to it. It could be that the jack stop felt has fallen off. Usually you have to be looking into the action and watching as you hear the noise to narrow it down to the source of the problem.

I think all the reasons you mentioned can cause clicking noise if you push the key down. In this one the clicking noise happens when you release the key. And it sounds like two piece of wood are touching each other and it is loud.

There is wood chance that something is under the back of the key which would make noise when the key is released because as you release the key the back of the falls down onto the Backrail cloth.

Hi Jeannette, The piano I'm using in this demonstration is a Yamaha P22 which is a 45" Yamaha studio piano. The same problem can be found on any piano though, including spinet and even grand pianos.

I do think they are loose on my piano. My noise is different is sounds like a loud bounce.
