Continuing on with our “Fundamental Series”, we will take an in-depth look at the fundamental frequencies of pianos. Understanding these fundamental frequencies can be a key factor in bettering your engineer skills. Website: soundoracle.net/
Pianos are a very common instrument found in several genres of music including Pop, R&B, Hip Hop, Trap, EDM, Country & so on. This instrument can bring elegance, warmth, & even sparkle & energy to your music, but did you know there are certain frequencies that create problems within your mix when it comes to pianos?
In this video, we discuss a detailed analysis of the fundamental frequencies of a piano. We talk about & demonstrate what specific boosted frequencies will help a piano become more present in the mix without clashing with the rest of the music. We also take a look at different frequencies that should be cut to avoid muddiness & overcrowding throughout your mix.
As with any aspect of music, the type of piano & song varies with frequencies; however, these key elements will point you in the right direction of a beautiful sounding piano. Your listeners & fans will appreciate the tastefulness these techniques bring to your piano without overcrowding the other instruments.
Follow along as professional engineer Eric “Realistic” Michael gives you a step-by-step guide on choosing the right frequencies to boost & cut for a piano.

Hi, do you have any tips for recording electronic pianos to sound warm ? I use Sonar X3 as DAW and several plugins, but my recordings of solo piano are thin and looks plastic, looks lile mono sound. I´d like I could make it more like an acoustic piano, very warm, more wood, natual. Any ideas or plugins, compressors, exciters, any tips ?

Hi Eric. I am trying editing existing piano, guitar and flute music. My goal is to make this music softER and smoothER, in order to help listeners to fall asleep. Could you please suggest a kind of "universal" plug-ins which would make the above-mentioned instruments sound softer and smoother?
@realisticproductionsLLC
@realisticproductionsLLC 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! I honestly think that is more of a style of playing thing more than a mixing thing. The velocity, touch, & dynamic performance would have the biggest impact. The only thing I would suggest on the mixing side is to remove harsh frequencies (usually found in the 2-3k range) remove whistle & hiss noises (usually found in the 5-10k range) and add some reverb to the flutes & guitars to make them feel "floatier" & spacious. Is the page your commenting from where you post your music or where can I find it? That sounds like music I would be interested in listening to.

this is a good video to understand where the frequencies are generally but you should be putting it in context with other instruments and genres. EQ'ing has much more to do with the surrounding instruments and where you want that instrument to sit in the mix.. Thanks for sharing regardless.

for me I start with a pultec style eq for tonal shape and then if I hear some issues I grab the pro q. Less work ...less phase issues.

DonPedroElBuey I was using Pro-Q 2 to cut & the 550a to boost. I believe I did showcase a difference between the two with boosting the top end, just show the tone difference between the two EQs.

So I guess I was kinda in the right direction of eqing pianos. I just would cut a lot more and raise a lot more with the middle and kinda through out the whole piano. I’d cut the main parts though of the low ends more, and up the highs. I always struggled with pianos though digitally. I don’t know why they all sound super flat, and just very muddy.

Cut some high mid frequencies. Have to use your ear. Try scooping around 1k( maybe ) and then around 4K. Another option is to also put a high shelf on it and drop a couple of dbs starting at 4K. These are just estimates but start scooping til you have a smooth sound.

Oh so you just want a preset? well especially on piano (considering its one of the most wide ranging instruments in terms of frequencies and its involvement varyies from track to track with its purpose) THERE IS NO PRESET. You need to know the fundamentals of why you do what you do when eqing.
