Either this is a mere coincidence that youtube recommended to watch this to me or it is monitoring my practice journey, I have just had one of those dips in my graph just yesterday with my alberti practice. Normally what I do if that starts to happen, I tell myself to stop for a moderate break, try a different exercise or try again the next day because the mistakes that happen, my brain knows the correct path and yet my fingers do something else for example (out of sync) as you have mentioned. Thanks, Illinca. Subscribed.

I'm really happy to hear that this tutorial was helpful! :) I will mention a very important thing, though: in another comment, you wrote that you only started to learn piano a couple of weeks ago - and yet, you play Alberti patterns??? This is WAY too soon, and it's no wonder that you struggle with them. You're probably currently following the unprofessional old-school '5-finger' approach - where 5-finger patterns are played straight away, legato. This is a shortcut to tension, finger-only playing and LOTS of bad technical/expressive habits. If you want to learn why that is, and what to do instead - you can follow my step-by-step Video Course for Beginners (find a detailed description of this Course in our FAQs [www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs], answer No. 17). Good luck! ;)

@@pianocareer Oh yes, my comment on your correct key attack video, To be more accurate, The alberti pattern began in my 7th lesson (week 7). Of course I didnt push myself to complete the lesson within 7 days, I gave myself more time when I needed it. But now that I think of it, the online teacher I found and his beginner's guide started right away with five finger(Left Hand/Right Hand/Both) exercises or Legato. I will have a look at the FAQs link provided. Thanks for looking after me. Much appreciated!
@pianocareer

You're very welcome! :) Yep, what you're describing is the typical '5-finger-pattern' scenario - outdated, very harmful, and sadly still widespread :(. Many professional teachers nowadays are actually 'on a mission' to prevent this method from spreading any further, and to counteract its past damages - but it's a very slow journey LOL. We're not giving up! :)))

Really useful, applicable and brilliant advice for not only piano but every aspect of life. For myself, this was the journey from not knowing Japanese to being accepted into a Japanese Recruitment company, from being overweight to my ideal weight and muscle, and now my journey to learning to play the piano has begun. Plateaus that appeared simultaneously without delay one after another, and through persevering by reminding myself of the end goal, that you just need to keep going when you feel like the whole world's against you, that you won't make any progress. Thank you very much for reminding of the feeling that I had long since forgotten!

I keep coming back to this video. I came here after 5 months approx. From last few days my progress is having a great downfall. I can't beleive its happening. From last 30-35 days i was astonished to see my growth. I was taking giant steps in learning. Things became quite easy and simple. I was so happy. But suddenly this happened i broke a key on my dp. I was scared to death because i knew that in these lockdown days i could not even get it repaired. But somehow i manage to get it repaired with the help of youtube videos. But after this incident i have lost my confidence. And i didn't played my piano for 2 days and after that when i took courage to play it. I was playing like its my first days on piano literally. My fingers were not moving the way it was trained in last 8 months. May be i am scared of breaking more keys (Honestly this is the exact reason). I must have been putting lot pressure than require on keys. As i said my last 5 -6 days are getting worst than ever. Felt like i lost my touch and forgot everything that i ever learned. That little bit of smoothness that I've developed in 8 months is gone. Forgetting notes also. Feeling very very sad. But not hopeless as i know this just a phase that will pass. And this video is helping me to realise that fact. I hope this incident of breaking key becomes a learning to me. Date : 22 May 2020

Wow, just wow. I have been stuck for a couple months on this piece that I decided to play. of what I play, and I have to say, this so accurately described what I have been going through and reassured me of everything. You are right, the plateau do end up teaching you ton! I cannot count how much knowledge I have amassed due to simply not being able to make big octave jumps. I went down every rabbit hole and researched so much about technique. I just want to say that you are very special, and I'm sure you heard it before. But take it from someone who has scoured the depth of youtube for piano advice. You are by far the most accurate, articulate, and overall best teacher. You are truly a teacher. What defines a good teacher is their ability to get their ideas across in the most understandable and simplified way, and then to also always be able to push and motivate their students to never give up. You my friend, have both those qualities! I would've loved to take lessons with you, but I live all the way in Dallas haha, You should definitely set up and offer online lessons! Thank you for your videos, and for being you

Thank you so so much, Abed! By the way, I teach online since 2012 - via my Piano Coaching Program at PianoCareerAcademy.com. You are welcome to join our community anytime! If you would like to learn more about this program (how it works, what is included in the membership etc.) - you can take a look at our detailed FAQ page (www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs/). And a little tip: when we feel stuck, technique is not always to blame. More often than not, if the artistic concept of the piece and our expressive tasks are clear, the technical execution falls into place much easier. I have an older tutorial on this topic (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZaWebl436iqoZc.html). Good luck and enjoy your practice! ;)

Your holistic mind, body and soul approach to learning music is brilliant - your ideas and methods are so well and eloquently presented - the best I've seen. I really respect your not wanting to sugar coat the learning process . . . perhaps the rhythm of our learning curve can be thought of as the musical rhythm of life. I have one three letter word printed in large capital letters on an 8X10 sheet of paper posted above my practice keyboard that keeps me going on the down days - JOY - if joy is the end goal then practice and the effort we put into learning will always lead to success. In another video, your mention of the importance of expression in every note we create is brilliant too. I think that we all are at our happiest in moments of creation. I will be joining your classes soon! THANK you!

Thank you so much, David! ;) Spot on about JOY: the road to mastery is indeed a long one (and there's no final destination), but if every step of the way is taken from a place of love and joy - then we always harvest fulfillment and success! ;) We're looking forward to welcoming you to our community! :))

Thank you very much for this video. I have learnt a lot. As I am myself quite an impatient person this helped me a lot. Especially the part when you said that what happens around us can affect our practice - absolutely true. Everything that you said was spot on. I have absolutely experienced those. I have been having lessons for years now. I am working and studying at the same time and of course dealing with daily life - hence, for the past years I have not been able to practice daily nor attend lessons weekly as planned. And I feel that I am stuck and not progressing at all. But looking back from where I’ve started to where I am now, I’ve actually improved. I will always remember your words of wisdom. Be humble and don’t get depressed. Thanks so much for this wonderful video. I will never, ever give up! ❤️❤️

Your welcome. I really enjoy your lectures. They are practical and I think that everyone could benefit listening to your presentations. I always thought the Russian School of playing and performance was the best. I was taught that during my student years and I teach my students the same. My transfer students tell me the way they played before always caused problems with back strain (the way they sat on their seat) and of course their hand position (collapsing arch, elbows too high and swinging out when they played a scale). This is quickly remedied and when they come in for their next lesson, they tell me how much easier it is to play and how enjoyable it is to practice. Thank you.

What is required is regular regimented practice and hard work. There will be periods when nothing seems to work, bad coordination, forgetting fingering, sloppy technique, mental fatigue. In these times, just step away from the piano for a day or three. The unconscious will still be working on the problems. I didn't start serious piano study until age 20, but I took a degree in music by 28 and played a senior recital of Brahms, Debussy, Ravel's Jeaux D'eau and also some pop songs on Fender Rhodes with a band. I went on to do studio session work in Nashville. Now I'm 30 years older, and my daily study is Hammond jazz organ. I still have the same difficulties as mentioned. But I notice subtle plateaus when suddenly, I can do the thing I'd been working on for some little while. My old Armenian piano teacher used to pound her fist on the piano and bark: "Talent is CHEAP! Give me some good hard work!" Your mileage will not vary.

Something that everyone experience is that you're brain still learn when you don't practice, after a week of hard working, you will keep learning unconsciously especially when you sleep, synapses will reinforce simply by thinking of piano, this is why living for music, thinking of piano every time will make you progress faster. I'm sure you noticed that after working hard then going to holidays for one or two weeks, you came back absolutely better one or two days after having gone back to piano!

The late blind pianist, Lenny Tristano, emphasized the importance of mentally practicing any instrument while being away from the instrument. Being sightless, he naturally encouraged his students to sit quietly and visualize the fingering and to sing the intervals. This develops the inner ear and cements the synapses. I'm not saying it's easy, but it is key to developing improvisation skill.

It is much about morale and discipline. Lack of determination will make you more prone to giving up. All should have some struggles during their lives. The nice times is much more nice when you have had some bad times. It is like, there can be no loud with no silence. And there can be no happiness without sadness. And this is applicable to most things in life.

My pleasure! By the way, learning advanced pieces by ear is not a good idea: you will see much faster progress if you practice a piece correctly, by reading it from the score and following all those steps I describe in most of my tutorials. Perseverance is of course magical - but it works much better if it is combined with correct practice :).

Dear Ilinca, You may have some answer for me... I am 47 years old an I learn the piano for almost two years, and I have an acceptable progress, - when I am alone... - but I always fail in front of others. When I am alone, it works well, but when someone presence, or even I try to play for an other person, even my wife, I always fail. Even if I could play it perfectly 5 minutes before. The worst case is my senior teacher. I know the piece well, but I always fail when I have to play it in the class in front of her. Just like I never played the piece before... This is a common thing or just me? I love your vide and I hope, you have a short answer to getting close to solve the problem. Thank you!

Hi Peter! This is entirely normal, and it happens to all of us :). When we play in front of others, our entire 'brain chemistry' changes (because we feel more self-conscious, we are afraid to fail etc.). I call this a 'shift of mental/emotional perspective' in my tutorials (I actually have several detailed ones on this topic - available on PianoCareerAcademy.com). Because of this 'shift', we perceive everything differently, our sensations change, additional tension appears - and we experience big quality loses as a result. The full solution will not fit into a short comment - but here are a few pointers: 1. VERY good preparation! I call this the 300-200-100% principle. You need to have a 300% level of preparedness when you practice alone: this way you will retain 200% when you play for your teacher; and 100% when you play on stage (which is more difficult). These numbers are obviously relative - but you understand the concept :). 2. Never simply play a piece through when you practice. Use the 'magnifying glass' method instead (which I describe in other tutorials). By playing a piece through (even if we do it slowly), we reinforce mechanical playing (we are not fully aware of everything we do - relying instead on muscle memory and reflexes). When we play in front of others, the 'autopilot' usually stops working - and we feel lost (making mistakes, forgetting the text etc.). Proper analysis and mindful practice will prevent that. 3. You need to practice your performing skills. Nobody is born an accomplished performer. To become better at it, we have to do it as often as possible. It's like public speaking - when we do it often, we feel less nervous, we experience less 'brain freeze' - and our delivery is more fluent and relaxed. Start by recording yourself - even the camera will make you experience the 'mental shift' at first. When you get good at that, start playing for your family. Once you feel comfortable - play for your friends. Then you will feel relaxed in front of your teacher. The next step - public performances! ;) Good luck and enjoy every step of the way! :))

I get this badly.....one way I find helps is to play it normally to the third bar and if there were errors ...then start again .. and if u play poorly again....the n repeat from first bar again.. ..by this time u will b back into the right place ...your focus will now b on the keyboard....just accept that this will happen each time probably.. ...and that it's just part of how u r made....and that being that person is still who u want to be....

I think the real difficulty to become a Piano/Guitar master (whatever) is the loneliness you have to stand for years while practicing. I used to practice guitar for a mad number of hours when i was 17 or something, having played the guitar first piano is a bit "easier" to me because i have a solid theoretical background.(Did that work? YES!) Sometimes loneliness still shows up, but if you want to become great, that's sadly the way. There is no secret but to work hard. Thanks for the inspiring video. This is truly valuable.

Thank you, Bruno! Indeed, mastering an instrument can get lonely (which I learned the hard way when I was studying) - that's why it's so important to BALANCE our practice, and to make sure that all the aspects of our life are in harmony (as I explain in many of my tutorials, for example this free article on PianoCareer.com: www.pianocareer.com/holistic-piano-playing/reaching-harmony/). I hope you enjoy it! ;)

Your video is great.I have studied Scriabin's 4th Sonata for many years. And only recently have I begun to feel comfortable with it.There were many plateaus and your explanation of them as periods of accumulation is much better than what my mind used to say. I am grateful for your video because it inspires me to continue with added energy.Wonderful teaching and very positive explanations !! Deeply thank you.
