I literally started crying because of this teacher's beautiful and healthy perspective on music and piano playing. Many piano teachers can learn from this video, not only students. This was a wonderful and inspiring video. Thank you very much! Edit: some of the negative comments left on this video are absurd... The people who need to be quiet and listen, are always the loudest ones.

No magical formulas, no mechanical tricks, no shortcuts, etc... Your honesty right out of the gate earned all of my respect young lady. It is refreshing to find a Music Teacher on KZfaq who is extremely honest about what it takes to become fluent at piano. I started 10 months ago at advanced age and I can only attest to the fact that this instrument will take dedication and perseverance on a daily basis for the remaining years of my life. (I wish I were young again so I’d have much more time as I absolutely LOVE piano despite how lousy I am.) Thank You as always for sharing your vast array of knowledge, advice, and expertise as you so kindly do, it is sincerely appreciated. 👏🙂🎹

Ranch Hand As piano professional training from music conservatory graduation for me, every piano teacher have their own opinion. Most of them about piano teacher emphasize basic skills and the dynamic of fingers touching and knuckle's flexible movement especially on Czerny etudes and hanon tempo metronome exercise 120 BPM every day. Gradually accelerate tempo from 120 BPM to 144 BPM. Then 152 BPM to 168 BPM.

Good young piano teacher require you to practice Czerny, that's order and it must obey. Every level of student's performance is different. You must observe depending on which level of student's performance. Good young piano teacher teach students in accordance with their aptitude.

Composer's manuscript Chopin etudes show tempo mark for example op 10 no 7 and op 25 no 1. This point is very important. If want to be pianist, international piano competition determine career of pianist. A world of difference about techniques on preliminary competition and first stage.

Hi, Thank you for all of your videos. I recently began your Piano Academy Course after on and off lessons in my childhood and adult life. Never have I enjoyed piano as much as I do now. After only a week, I feel I already have my tuition's worth of instruction and increase in knowledge. Your discussion on holistic body/wrist movement is a treasure onto itself. I created a diary of my experiences on the Piano World forum which others have said they are finding worthwhile to follow. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge in such a caring way. BTW, I wanted to mention that all of the fundamental skills you bring into your piano instruction are precisely the same as I have learned to bring into my Tai Chi practice: relaxation, imagination, expression via gesture, holistic November's, etc.

You really have been given many gifts. Not only your playing, but I have often wished I could speak a difficult (to me) foreign language...such as Russian...as well as you are able to speak English. I am an adult beginner at the piano, but I am trying to absorb as many tips as I can now, in my early playing, in order to avoid having problems later. Thank you!
@pianocareer
@pianocareer 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Art! Thank you for your appreciation! :) By the way, speaking about gifts: learning any art (or language, or skill) is first and foremost a question of perseverance, consistency, and LOTS of serious practice :). As many great musicians/actors/writers usually say - "success in something is 99% hard work, and only 1% talent/gift". Therefore, simply keep moving forward, day after day, keep learning - and you will be amazed at the enormous distance you have covered! Enjoy your practice! ;)

This is a gem! Exactly what is supposed to go into developing a professional pianist. Although, if you explain your little students everything you do to them, their mind would blow up. I try to keep it moving so that this process is unconscious to them. Sometimes, I just explain to them what they can now do and how we got there.
@pianocareer
@pianocareer Жыл бұрын
Thank you! 😊 Yes, absolutely - in working with children the pedagogical approach is quite different. Instead of explaining, we demonstrate. Instead of logical understanding, we appeal to their intuition and unconscious ability to imitate and assimilate. We use the same principles (of course) - but we apply them differently.

So don't get discouraged by your slow progress - just be consistent and wonderful results will naturally follow! ;)

Thank you for reminding us that artistry originates in the mind. And the need for an artistic impression/vision of the piece before we start to "practice". Wow! So much information. All great information. Almost more than you just playing and showing what you mean, but it's all about time and the ability to absorb and do all these points all together all the time. That's the true pro. Never had a piano growing up or even in a friends house or even had a piano teacher, but I have always tried to play every time I was near one. My main goal was to learn to sing and play simultaneously and with great articulation and fluid movement. I can do it for a few songs, but learning a new song takes a sabbatical to ever do it. I can sight sing well but never had to chance to play and read music by the notes. I just learned the chords and played as many variations that blended with my voice. With the passing of my mom I finally have a piano (even though it's digital it's still a piano). I am 65 and retired now and finally have the time to play but old habits die hard. Watching you gives me new hope to finally play one of the masterpieces of one of my favorite composers Chopin. Thank you for all your hard work in presenting this video and others. I may never be great pianist, but I do have a better understanding of what I should be doing to become a better pianist. Thanks again my beautiful friend...

Again, another brilliant presentation. I have so many words for praise but if I included them all, I would run out of space in my comment section. It is so wonderful to hear from someone that has the knowledge and training in playing the piano and the musical arts. What a relief from hearing others on KZfaq that spue out gibberish when teaching music. You come along and explain playing and musicianship in plain English that everyone can understand. I wish everyone could know about your videos especially budding pianists and musicians. I have recommended your videos to anyone wanting to study piano. @@pianocareer hello mam,I am a beginner with piano learning,and I have recently bought Casio ctk 2550. I use to play harmonium in my school days,and love to hear (inner hearing)Indian classical ragas,so holistically my music sense is such that I can find notations of music now,with a bit musing. But,as I can figure out,it's a sea of learning,and there are infinite things to explore with piano,and as my approach to anything is holistic,so with this,can you please guide me through!? It would be great of you:)

I like your holistic approach to learning the piano very much Ilinca! In future videos could you please recommend techniques for being able to sight-read accurately without continuously having to look at the fingers on the keyboard? How do you develop a mental map? A sense of touch of the piano keys with the ability to recognize which notes your fingers are touching but without looking, so that you can play with your eyes closed, or keeping the eyes on the score? Also tips for memorization techniques. To play piano well do you rely mostly on muscle memory or must you first understand the music harmonically so that you memorize chord progressions?

Hi! Thank you for your appreciation! :) You will find detailed tutorials on all the topics you mentioned in the Members Area of my Piano Coaching Program at PianoCareerAcademy.com: 1. By following our Sight-Reading Course (consisting of 15 progressive Lessons), you will improve your-sight reading skills in a harmonious manner, according to the professional system used in the Russian piano school. You will also learn how sight-reading really works, and why professionals DO look at the keys whenever they want (without affecting the reading process). 2. On our site you will also find a very detailed tutorial dedicated to memorization. 3. No, piano playing is not JUST about muscle memory - and it's also NOT just about harmony or chord progressions. These are just little elements of a much bigger picture! You can learn how everything really works by following my step-by-step Video Course for Beginners. This Course will help you to develop ALL your piano skills (technique, expression, hearing, reading, theory & analysis, pedaling etc.) in an enjoyable progressive manner (according to the professional Russian system). You can find out more about this Course (and about the functionality of my Piano Coaching Program) by taking a look at our detailed FAQs (www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs/). Hi Ilinka. Thank you for this exhaustive analysis of the correct process of piano playing although I feel a bit overwhelmed by the mass of factors which are essential in order to play in beautiful and good manner, still I wonder is it possible to get such skills simply by taking lessons on-line ( for example following your program )? Few months ago I started my journey with piano (on-line) and than I discover your KZfaq channel and because I am struggling with keeping the correct posture (especially when I try to keep my spine straight I've noticed my arms tend to rise and this create a tension) I consider to move under your wings... Anyway I love your approach to piano playing -it is very aikido-ish :) - it is based on relaxation and the creating the power from our inner centre and this in the end gives subtlety and smoothness to the art of playing on piano,which is so crucial! Your videos seem to support the truth that "while you work on your dream your dream works on you" :) Thanks a lot!

Thank you, Luca! Yes, all serious arts are based on the same fundamental principles - and I'm happy that you noticed the similarities between martial arts and piano playing :D. Yes, of course you can form all the skills I mention in the video by following the tutorials and courses available on PianoCareerAcademy.com. The important thing is to practice correctly, mindfully and consistently, in a PROGRESSIVE manner, and to follow ALL my recommendations. The main trap that many students fall into nowadays (no matter if they take real-life or online lessons) is IMPATIENCE: they want to make quick progress and play advanced pieces in only a couple of months (which is impossible!) - and as a result they skip steps, they don't invest any time and effort in building the fundamentals correctly, they ignore important aural/expressive/technical/analytical recommendations - and then they wonder why they experience so many difficulties. So avoid this trap, be persistent (as I explain in this free video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLt-a7qa3cnGaaM.html) - and wonderful results will appear naturally and inevitably. By the way, you can learn more about PCA and its functionality by taking a look at our detailed FAQs (www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs/).

Thank you so much, Sana! :)) Regarding sight-reading - I have already created an entire Course focused on improving this skill (not just one tutorial). This Course comprises: - 15 progressive Lessons (comprising 111 'addictive' sight-reading exercises, structured according to the professional system used in the Russian piano school); - 3 super-detailed Introductory Articles where I explain how sight-reading really works (and what common traps, myths and stereotypes to avoid); - a downloadable 'Score Collection' comprising 53 pieces that will supplement your sight-reading practice. At the moment of writing this reply (July 2017), the Introductory Articles, 6 Progressive Lessons and the 'Score Collection' are already available in the Members Area of my Piano Coaching Coaching Program at PianoCareerAcademy.com - and I keep publishing a new Lesson every fortnight. Lesson No. 7 will be published today or tomorrow! ;) If you wish to learn more about PianoCareerAcademy and its functionality, you can take a look at our detailed FAQs (www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs/) - especially at my answers to questions No. 1-6 (find out how PianoCareerAcademy works, what is included in the membership etc.). Really, you are a brilliant speaker... you are talented in conveying ideas very precisely and with inspiring manner. Thanks for the obvious effort you given in this video and other videos. Since I was kid, I felt that music is the language/medium/way by which i can express my inner feelings - not just emotions as you have mentioned. it is a controlled feelings. Unfortunately, I didn't study music academically ( I am a telecom engineer) however, I kept reading about music theories on my own. I have started playing Lute (Aud) eight years ago however, I felt missing something... THE HARMONY.. I realized that I need to play on a wider instrument "Piano" which I adore. I have started Piano lessons two months ago and I am very motivated. Do you think it is too late to start knowing that I am 38 ? Thanks one more time :)

Can you please recommend a light portable "full key size" keyboard "without" all the bells and whistles that can be used anywhere to practice scales and fingering patterns only, please. And prefferably "not" an 88 keyboard. which would you recommend that still has as decent a sound on something soley meant for ease, and portability to learn 2-3 octave scales and fingerings patterns. The only requests would be that the keys be full size (preferrably), weighted touch sensitive keys. Headphone capabilities would be nice too. No other sounds other than piano sounds. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ! (P.S. - we have a beautiful upright acoustic piano already. This would be for-on-the-go finger exercises/pattern practice.)
@pianocareer
@pianocareer 7 жыл бұрын
I do not recommend using a keyboard for 'finger exercises' only. What I do recommend is to learn how professional ergonomic piano playing really works. Once you do, you will never perceive 'finger exercises' separately from all the other elements of an ergonomic technique (and you will also not perceive 'technique' separately from the other elements of piano playing). Yes, scale & arpeggios help us to develop good technical skills (so that we can apply the same exact sensations and movements to ANYTHING we play). Therefore, we need to practice them on the SAME type of instrument we usually work on (may it be an acoustic piano or a good digital piano). Anything else is a loss of time! If you think that technical skills can be developed SEPARATELY, in a mechanical manner (or, even worse, if you think that you can train your 'fingers' separately from your arms/elbows/wrists), then you missed the point I was making in the video above :). I also recommend reading my answer to FAQs No. 24 (where I explain how to choose a good digital piano).
@SherrisPlace

I had a feeling you were going to say that.... lol 🙃 I was just hoping for a recommendation so we could practice "On-The-Go" wherever we were if we weren't home to practice on our acoustic piano. Thank you for your quick response.

Thank you so much! Yes, this particular 'model' is my invention - but it is based on MANY years of experience, on all the knowledge that I gathered from my wonderful teachers. what song do you recommend for a beginner to learn for practicing the speed besides fur elise, prelude in c and minuet? i really want to know:)
@pianocareer
@pianocareer 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Nikita! I recommend to learn how to play piano properly, in a progressive, holistic and systematic manner. 'Speed' cannot be trained separately from all the other piano skills. In order to make good progress, you need to move through the piano repertoire in a step-by-step manner, under the guidance of a good teacher (combining pieces of different genres/tempos/characters in order to acquire a wide range of technical/expressive benefits). You can do all that (and much more) by following my step-by-step Video Course for Beginners (available in the Members Area of PianoCareerAcademy.com). This Course will help you to develop ALL your piano skills (technique, expression, hearing, reading, theory & analysis, pedaling etc.) in a harmonious manner, according to the professional system used in the Russian piano school. Find out more about this Course (and about the functionality of my Piano Coaching Program) by taking a look at our detailed FAQs (www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs/). Please pay special attention to questions No. 17 (dedicated to the Beginner Course), No. 19 (dedicated to the Scale Course) and 1-6 (you will learn how PCA works, what is included in the membership etc.).
