Well, the Yamahas shown in this video (CF series) cost almost the same price as their Steinway equivalents. The Yamahas you are talking about (G and C series) are built elsewhere using different techniques. They're more mechanized with more emphasis on production output quantity.

His dad never knew the true cost of the piano, but he believed it. The boy (now 50 years old) spent over $90K for the piano. He enjoyed it more than anything. It was his dream. He had it tuned and regulated, with no amount of money being spared for this wonderful instrument he loved so much. Three months later, the boy contracted severe Pneumonia, and passed away within two weeks.

I'm sure that S&S had a patent for the rim construction but the patent should have expired by now. Many piano makers now use S&S method to form their rims. There are many more features that were patented by S&S including overstrung scale (When the bass strings cross the treble strings) and sostenuto middle pedal that you can find on many grand pianos.

@Wistbacka, most of Steinway's patents are old and have expired a long time ago so most piano makes are using Steinway's technology to make their pianos. There are many features that were patented by Steinway such as the sostenuto pedal, the overstring design, the "bell" underneath the treble side, and more that are finding their ways into other pianos.

There was a boy who loved to play piano, and was very good at it. His father said he'd never be anything as a musician. He made the boy become a legal major, and twenty years later, became quite wealthy. One day, he asked his dad, "Dad, I never got the grand piano I always wanted. I'm thinking of it though." His father, who thought anything over $10K for a piano was expensive, said "Go for it, just don't spend too much." A day later, he called his dad. "Dad, I got a Yamaha concert grand for $18k

The most interesting things in the "Making of S&S"-video was the fact when they speak about S&S-patented building methods, and still you can see Yamaha doing the exact same thing (using same kind of gear and technique) as S&S does. Like the bending of the rim. S&S claims that their technique and machine is their own patented construction, but still it is the exact same machine that Yamaha (and probably all Grand Piano makes) uses.

I can't see what you mean? I just went through the making of S&S pianos, and apart from the actual key-mechanisms and their fine-tuning, I can't see any difference in accuracy, or care for detail and finish. A big part of that extra fine-tuning in key-mechanism also came from the fact that S&S uses a different and own mechanism that requires a different kind of tuning. I still believe that S&S is better, but not as much as the price-tag, and the brand-image, wants it to be.

@bunnyandpanda Particle Wood Is not reliable and will fall apart. I've seen Walmart furniture break without any reason. These instrument should last about 80-100 years and all makers want to use the best materials possible to keep their quality up. Imagine how long the pinblock will last if it was made from Particle Wood.

damn it all, can't they just use particle wood to make pianos so they can be more affordable?? lolololol... i wonder what the cheapest price is for a piano. i saw some at the salvation army for 200 dollars, but who knows if they were in working condition. i'd imagine such a cheap piano going for about $150 retail price. anyone dare attempt to make one? i'd LOVE to see the results!

So many mistakes in construction technique. 1. Why not install the soundboard before the outer rim? Sure would speed things up and allow better engineering. 2. Hand planing the ribs? Never know what you end up with from the engineering specs.
