Enjoyed the video. One thing: Wagner isn’t pronounced Wag-ner like the dog wags its tail but instead, because he is German, would be pronounced Vahg-ner.

Thanks! Not University, but in recent years I have been finishing my RCM credentials. As much as I enjoy theory and actually playing piano, studying music history is my favorite!

About the dynamics: Doesn't Chopin's Ballade no. 1 have a "più forte possibile" followed by a crescendo? :D Minor correction, though: the bassoon has existed since the baroque when it gradually took over from the dulcian.

I recommend piano lady here read Charles Rosen's books about the Classical and Romantic styles. My own feeling is that Beethoven remained more a Classical composer like Mozart and Haydn than a Romantic composer like Schumann or Chopin. This is true even for Beethoven's Late Period.

I listened to a lot of concerto pianists playing the sonatas of Beethoven, and I liked Claudio Arrau's interpretation, but, to be honest, I can't really pick. Every time I listen to the way the other pro pianist perform the sonatas sound almost the same, but of course, we have different interpretations.

I like most interpretations of Beethoven's sonatas as well. Because since they're amazing concert pianists, the sonatas are going to sound great. There's just something indescribable about Barenboim's interpretation for me. I just "feel" his music more. And that's really the main difference for me, which is hugely subjective. (There are also differences of interpretation that are mainly pretty minor - like some pianists are stricter with tempo, for example). But I think the best performers are those who can reach you on an emotional level, and that's going to be different for everyone.

Yep. Barenboim is also great. Im not a professional so I don't really know what to do on a specific chord progression, sometimes I broke the interpretation of the editor instead I am following my interpretation. I feel my interpretation are bad.

Sorry, the bassoon did not "start to exist" with the advent of Romanticism. And Beethoven hardly had any influence on Chopin at all. Chopin was inspired by French and Italian models plus Bach. And Wagner is pronounced Vahgner. Among the useful information here there are some real whoppers.

I was thinking the same thing. Beethoven definitely had an influence on Liszt, Berlioz, and Brahms, but not Chopin. I would also argue that some of Haydn and Mozart's later works do start to show Romanticism. Lastly, Beethoven's works definitely were more Romantic than Classical, this is why the Classical era ended with his death. Romantic music was not well perceived at first, it took years for composers to start to emulate what Beethoven what composing.

I'm confused, I was researching and it said by the end of the romantic period, labour was harsh,poverty was common, but then this tells me the opposite? Are they both correct, just different time in the period?....

In the beginning they were very optimistic about the revolution, people got wealthier (or at least, some people got wealthier, others got poorer, but that wasn't so clear yet) and people thought they could conquer the world. But towards the middle and end of the romantic people, their optimism got traded for pessimism. They were apparently also downsides to the industrial revolution and they started realizing their ideas had been unrealistic. The amount of middleclassers did rise though, but as I said, the poor people often got even poorer and it got pretty bad. But so, it's double. You'll probably notice in her second part (I didn't see it yet either) that the themes of the composers in the romantic era also shifts from sentimental to pessimism, dead thoughts etc. (of course, not all of the composers follow, but that's the trend). Hope this helped!! :)

Yeah, supposedly very moody. Nonetheless, he still had lots of close friends and supporters at the end of his life, so I like to think that, despite the moodiness, he had redeeming qualities. :)
