Picard season 3 is here, and we're back with an episode 1 breakdown! This season returns the entire (surviving) TNG crew, but also contains numerous homages to classic Trek movies, and especially--the Wrath of Khan.

#StarTrek #Picard #EasterEggs
Right away, this debut episode beams in a double Easter egg with a font style and specific text on the screen with the phrase “In the 25th Century…” This font is reminiscent of the onscreen text at the beginning of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which began with “In the 23rd Century…” This aesthetic callback isn’t just superficial either. Because, as we’ll see, this episode has other similarities to The Wrath of Khan.
[CLIP: Wrath of Khan opening, “In the 23rd Century…”]
As we get our first scene, we’re hit with two musical Easter eggs back-to-back; we briefly hear a snippet of Jerry Goldsmith’s overture from Star Trek: First Contact, [clip] and then, as we see the SS Eleos surrounded by enemy ships, we get th e 1941 song “I Don’t Want to Set the World On Fire,” from the Ink Spots. This intro, complete with a nebula and a golden oldie is very similar to the very beginning the season premiere of Picard, Season 1’s “Remembrance,” which opened with very similar shots set to the Bing Crosby version of “Blue Skies.”
But the Ink Spots have an even deeper connection to Next Gen nostalgia. In 1991, Brent Spiner released an album of standards called Ol’ Yellow Eyes is back. On the track, “It’s a Sin To Tell a Lie,” Spiner was joined by four backup singers called “The Sun Spots,” who were Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart, and LeVar Burton. So, The Ink Spots singing at the start of Picard Season 3, could be interpreted as foreshadowing the reunion of the TNG crew, or maybe, that Brent Spiner might sing later in the season? Or is that wishful thinking?
[CLIP, Data singing Blue Skies in Nemesis]
Before we see Beverly Crusher, we’re shown a slew of objects that should remind us of the good doctor, including her flowers, from “Cause and Effect,” her pearls from “The Big Goodbye,” as well as two drama masks, reminding us of Bev’s love of playwriting and the theater, which cropped up in the episodes “The Nth Degree,” “Disaster,” “Frame of Mind,” and “A Fistful of Datas.” In the latter episode, it was kinda implied that Bev’s play, “Something For Breakfast,” was probably a play about her having breakfast with Captain Picard.
[Clip: Bev saying “Something For Breakfast” IN TNG]
We also get a very deep cut here with an award that says “Cor Caroli V, Medical Away Team, Honorary Citizens.” This references a mission of the Enterprise-D from TNG, which we NEVER ACTUALLY saw. In the episode “Allegiance,” Picard mentions that the Enterprise’s medical relief mission to Cor Caroli V had been classified, which, at the time, allowed him to realize that Cadet Mitena Haro was an imposter. [CLIP: Picard saying “Starfleet has classified the Cor Caroli V plague…]
“Allegiance” also featured a Jean-Luc imposter on the Enterprise-D, who made romantic moves on Beverly.

Kirsten Dunst played Hedril, not Kestra (though she did remind Lwaxana of her). I think the “Red Lady" being a statue of Captain Garrett is a tease that we may see Sela later on in this series. Yesterday's Enterprise was the cause of her existence, and it's been teased that other legacy characters/threads may show up in this series which haven't been announced yet. Would be nice to see Denise Crosby on Trek one last time. ALSO, “47" is a long-running gag from the TNG-era that continues today. No surprise to see it in Picard's password (again).

Kestra drowned in a pond, and Kirsten’s character slipped into a pond in the D’s arboretum. The trigger was strong and seriously traumatized Lwaxana. Am I the only one that thinks the aggressor aliens at the beginning are the silicon-based “clickers” from TNG “Schisms”? (The one’s kidnapping crew and experimenting on them) The robes look the same, they made similar clicking noises, the “masks” they wearing could be for life support in human atmosphere…ships also insect-like as they seem to be based on. We been hearing for months this show was revisiting an enemy from the past, and that was a very left-open storyline…. that’s one of my theories

Nope. I actually think they're the parasitic aliens from Season 1, Episode 25, Conspiracy. It was said by Data that they may return someday and, in the episode, The guy at the end (avoiding spoilers), stated 'they wore different faces' along with Beverly warning them not to trust Starfleet, whom those aliens infiltrated in TNG. I'm wondering if this is a 25 year-in-the-making callback.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the last trailer for Picard. Then I saw Rachel Garrett in red and had to stink. What does she have to do with the conspiracy theory? They wouldn’t show that for nothing either. Maybe it’s a combination of several threats. My first theory was it was the marquee coming back for retribution against Starfleet. Because in that series, you had several Starfleet officers side with the marquee in the DMZ zone. Now look at me. Now I’m having coming up with theories like Alex Jones is. Ha ha. But I love everybody’s theories and I hope they all come true. In a twisted way. I hope they all come true because they all make sense. Every theory I’ve heard of red makes sense.

We dissected the end credits and, looking at the star ship designations found: USS constance - went missing at Worf 359, and according to wiki, had the notable commanders Locutus of Borg and someone called Hanson (apparently no relation to 7 of 9) USS pioneer - captained by Malcolm Reed from Enterprise with 1st officer Travis Mayweather The end credits also had a lot of references to DNA and the neural network

Fantastic breakdown, as always. Thank you! I think Picard's (or really any high-ranking Starfleet officer's) passcode isn't as important as their voiceprint. It's similar to 2FA. In the past, someone like Data can perfectly mimic someone's voiceprint, but without the passcode, they wouldn't have full access.

(Much like "coxswain" -- more commonly applied to the sport of rowing, but also used by several navies -- which is pronounced "KOX-uhn".) There are a ton of nautical terms which aren't pronounced the way they look, perhaps the most common being "starboard" which is said like "STAR-bird".

Notes as I watch: Romulan ale is probably no longer illegal after the collapse of the Romulan Star Empire. It's not true necessarily that Seven broke up with Raffi. She's lying to the guy because she's in intelligence as you say here. It's possible they broke up but it's also possible that they didn't. And if they did they could be on good terms. I guess we will find out. I loved the metaphasic shield reference. I don't think Picard confused deep space 4 with 11. I think he just didn't know it had shut down. But that definitely blew his cover. "The La Sirena" is excessive. It has 2 "the"s. Just say La Sirena. Poor Rachel Garrett, can't catch a break even as a statue. "47" is itself an Easter egg as the number appears multiple times in Trek. I believe it's a reference to Pomona College in some way. Anyhow, I enjoyed this video as always.

I am glad to see That I am not the only one who saw that, if the episode is an indicator of the season, this is a rehash of the TOS movie Series with the TNG crew. I personally saw the Enemy vessel at the end and wondered if that is Lore's Borg since we had Hugh already and we have seen another Soren type character and Moriarty teased. On an unrelated note the alien ship is similar to the Vi'dar Talios in STFC and that also makes me think Borg.

Great breakdown, I loved this episode, so many callbacks! Some things I noticed: the bad guy ship at the end is somewhat reminiscent of the Shadow ships of Babylon 5. And the model starships in Ten Forward are actual Hero Collector/Eaglemoss models from their Star Trek: the Official Starships Collection. That company’s gone bankrupt last year sadly so they now are true collector’s items. The smaller Enterprise-D model that’s tossed into the drink is a Micro Machine collectable. Keep up the great work!
