I recently finished watching the campaign and after watching the wrap up episode I wanted to listen to Scanlan's letter to Pike again, but without having to sift through the entire video everytime. So I clipped it and wanted to share it with everyone that might want to hear this beautiful and moving letter again. Honestly, it made me tear up.

But now as the sun sets on my life, I have discovered something new, I have a daughter, who's heart beats my blood and who's life is my own, and she unlike her father can be good and right, and one day worthy of your love. Which is why, on my deathbed I leave her to you. Don't you see? All this time I thought I was chasing a lover, but I was chasing a mother for my child. You, Pike Trickfoot, are the saviour to Kaley that I could never be. Your wisdom and honour and goodness can give her the chance at redemption that I never had. Pike take my daughter as your own, show her the light of Sarenrae, guide her to be a kindhearted Gnome, teach her to be everything her father was not, that way in death, my heart will be complete, and it will be inside Kaylie by your side, like I always dreamed it would. "...I'm gunna cry..." Damn Sam. Bless you. To think, he only made Scanlan Shorthalt because he wanted to be the worst dorkiest character... but now he is the favourite of many and convinced everyone that gnomes and bards are decent characters.

@@frenne_dilley First of all, I love your name, this is a phrase that to me embodies what is missing in internet dialogue. I have to disagree though, I have seen and felt for myself that sometimes the character and roleplaying you want to do is hidden somewhere in the crunch of the game. You could play D&D all night without ever rolling dice and have fun that way but for me the most juicy stories are told when mechanics and Roleplaying align to deliver a 1 2 punch of awesomeness. You want to roleplay as a character with an Identity crisis? Why not multiclass? You wanna optimize your build? Why not roleplay as a Monk obsessed with the traditional notion of self improvement and rigorous training that is so dominant in classic kung fu movie narratives I think there are ways to live in the best of both worlds.

Sam rolled a natural 20, adding his performance AND charisma modifiers. I also had a serious laugh at the "Jesus this is good!"

@@scarlightemperor3410 Now that I ACTUALLY play D&D 5e, I'd like to amend that: that was a NAT 20 with a +6 Charisma, and his Performance includes both the normal proficiency bonus AND Expertise, tripling his proficiency bonus. At lvl 17+ that's a total of 44 Performance.

@@0saintclark0 oh, she opened it and read it immediately after he gave it to her, to many laughs around the table. But Ashley never read it out loud or shared it, so it was an ongoing mystery to the fans. There are some fun clips out there of the characters talking about the letter in-game.

Because timeline wise, Pike was crushing on Percy at the time Scanlan gave her the letter. Her heart was someone else’s at the time.

If Scanlan had died, I feel like Sam would play as Kaylie trying to get revenge on who killed him. Makes me kind of wish Scanlan died. Not really though, knowing how C1 had ended

when he died fighting raishan he rolled up taryon and then when he was brought back he ended up playing as taryon anyway, so if the ritual had failed and scanlan had permanently died, he would've just played taryon

His entire character was based on how he met his wife. He was in an acapella group iin college that was a player and he changed all his ways to get a chance to date his now current wife.

I really hope that one day they get an amazing editing team to cut out Foster and reupload these gems. Real shame to lose Between the Sheets and Talks because of him, but I understand why they took them down. Just sucks

I doubt they can unfortunately. KZfaq editing can only do so much, unless they have the actual masters of the recording, which I'm sure they do. Us Critters do want to see this up again in it's entirety but time will tell.

Sam/Scanlan, I just cried my eyes out hearing you read your letter. I love you guys so much. In the beginning when I first started watching Critical Role/Vox Machina, it was purely to get my brother off my back and to pick up a few pointers for DnD'ing as we had just started playing a family. Needless to say it didn't take long for me to get hooked on your show/game (in fact it took 1hr of Episode 1 Campaign 1) I am now currently (on this day 18 August 2021) on ep 53. I have already almost wet pants laughing so much and so loud at all your banter (spewing my tea/coffee all over my laptop as well and choking on said coffee/tea), I too have been so grossed out by Matt's explicit gory details of brutal attacks and monster descriptions (this is a very good thing Matt, this is a complement and a very good one). At first I had a favourite character - Grog, then I it was Vax (Yes, I have a crush on Vax, it's like the teenager inside me has fallen for the inconspicuous/dangerously caring Vax). Then Vex, I was so, so, soooooo upset when you died that I cried my heart out especially seeing how Vax got so upset that he gave himself to the Raven Queen to save you. Pike, you are such a good Cleric and you love your team/group/family so much. Keyleth, it had taken me while to like you, I think it was once you and the group went to the Fire Ashari together that you became a favourite. Percy I know that it was dangerous to have that smokey demon attached to you, but you were so cool with all that smoke wrapping itself around you. I wasn't a fan of Scanlan because although he's madly in love with Pike, he keeps screwing around, but he grew on me and hearing this letter to Pike... Scan the man, you're not so bad. Again, I love you all so much, you have all made life so much more fun. Matt, one last thing, I watched your interview "Between the Sheets" I want you to know that you are a very, very, very, very good GM/DM you are the best voice actor and I love your millions of different characters. Matthew Mercer you are appreciated for your talent of story telling, I love yours more than the new Exandria campaign DM, you give the listeners so much more detail, descriptions, voices, expressions, but it's nice to see you taking a back seat and playing. Okay so I've got to work now, I just wanted to tell you all how much I love you and your show, I can't wait to continue with campaign 2 (I already watched ep1 and some of your guys' funny moments which include campaign 2). Keep up the good work, I can't wait to buy the VM and MN jigsaw puzzles. Okay, okay, gotta go. love you buy.

Damn Sam!! I got to know critical role, because of the uploaded videos in yt of season 2 about the Mighty Nein, and since the first episode, Sam was clearly a favourite of mine, with his awesome add for d&d beyond and explaining the funny character he chose, Nott the brave. That being said, is amazing to find out how awesome his character was in season one. Sam is amazing!! And also the great cast of critical role!! ❤👍

Try looking for a collection of Scanlan's songs. If you liked Nott's terrible puns when using Tasha's Hideous Laughter, you'll love the limericks and songs and parodies of songs Sam brings up when he uses Vicious Mockery.

The animated show adaptation "The Legend of Vox Machina" premiered in 2022. The table-top roleplaying game that show is based on, Critical Role's Campaign 1: Vox Machina, was first streamed in 2015, although they'd been playing at home for several years prior to that. Critical Role is currently on its third campaign, with new episodes most Thursdays.
