In this video we start out by searching for a campsite in the higher elevations of Nevada to escape the late Spring heat. Then we hike and explore up a nearby valley to see what we can find. I also talk about how to keep your RVs interior from getting coated with dust when you venture down the dirt back roads. Life on the road with our converted cargo trailer camper.

I travel highway 50, “the loneliest road in America” a few times a year. Ely is my halfway mark from my house to my daughter’s house in Utah. So I bisect Nevada. I love that drive! Elk, pronghorns, desert bighorn sheep, deer, rabbits, and coyotes are the animals I’ve actually seen from the road while living in Nevada. Mountain lions are out there, along with skunks, ground squirrels, pack rats, and tons of mice!! I’m really enjoying this chapter in my life! Turning 70 in a year, I’m in better shape than I was at 60! Enjoy your travels and keep sharing your ideas for locations. I visit them from time to time!

You and I are about the same age. I'm finishing up a trailer a wee bit smaller than Rick-N-Linda's, and have already experimented with the trailer cabin passive pressurization. One day I may even do a video. Imagine that. Who knows. But I'm excited! and responding to your comment in particular because it is Nevada I wish to explore. Driving remote regions of Nevada in a rig similar to what we see in this video will be my version of sailing solo across the Pacific... but I like to think I'm prepared for it. I've been prepping for this chapter of my life for two decades. Recently retired. Here's wishing you continued safe passage across Nevada!

the length of your truck is 17.5 feet long the suburban model is 15.2 inches longer rick, ! to heck with the arrow heads the wash your talking about you should be full of gold , due to the run off of the mtn, i would be running a dry washer and try my luck , the arrowheads are great to have but gold is better? i remember a place that hapen in az outside of Black Canyon City back a few yrs and they had turned a mining operation into the city dump, that day i made 12.75 oz of gold just sitting there with my gold detector, down a wash? 1 chuck as 4.55 oz itself.

My wife, when our twins were still little girls, had a purse the size of Texas, with all the stuff a mom needs to carry for kid emergencies and what not. One time, she told me, she had that purse in the passenger seat and it set off the seat belt warning bell, lol. So, Linda’s purse with all its contents, is a plus out there in the big, wide world.

Wow, what a nice location👍. Wish my ex-wife would have loved the outdoors but the first time I took her out hiking she said I was trying to kill her 🤣and I almost had to carry her back to the truck. Definitely a city girl. That was the last hike for the two of us but took my kids out when they got older. Now it's just me so if I want to go I go. No dust in my van when driving only when am parked with the doors open. I did find that if I point my fan at the open door it seems to help. Can't wait to see those ovens I had forgotten about them but now remember my dad taking me there when I was a kid back in the 1960s. No time for bear spray I go for my weapon, and practice drawing often. I did see a woman who had her bear spray on a rope around her neck that was long enough to still spray quickly but it does swing around when you're hiking. Have fun, you two are lucky.

I've been following and enjoying your channel for quite a while now. I value the sensible info from you both when exploring and camping, basic but comfortable. I'd be very interested in your preferences, knowledge, use, etc. about effective self-protection in the wilderness. I know that KZfaq doesn’t allow firearm videos unless they are age restricted. Would you ever consider making a small channel that would cover firearms and safety in the wilderness? The “gun” channels I've found aren’t really suitable for wilderness protection for the everyday person. I get the sense that Rick and Linda know a thing or two, especially with Rick's interest in early US firearms 😊.

It can definitely be fun to explore the roads less taken. Yikes on scratching your vehicle and camper. Good idea to level out. We always carry the leveling block things. Never know when we might need them. Sure is a pretty spot! AMEN, Sister! It's so hard to find a good holster option for a woman. Generally, I just use the elastic under shirt one, however, I agree that takes time. Those few extra seconds could mean life or death with an animal or a human. When we are in the forest, I use my big holster for my 9 and just make sure my shirt is not over the top of it. I just let it show. Would love something more comfortable. Can't believe no one has come up with a better option for us pistol packing ladies. LOL I'm with Linda. We go the hard way someone best be carrying me. She cracks me up. Nothing better than old plastic water 😆Love the cactus. That tree is pretty darn awesome too! Oh man. Making us wait til next week to see the meal? Looks like next weeks vid is going to be full of some cool exploration.

Hi Rick and Linda, Nice to see you again. You two are a hoot. Rick when you get home you need to finish the drawers so Linda can store the tape measures in the car (or you can bring a 25 footer) so you can measure the trailer😂 We are getting more 🐻s in CT. The other day one climbed up a tree behind the local downtown McDonald's. Guess he or she wanted a Big Mac. They darted it and relocated it. We need a bear hunt. CT is too populated to have bears everywhere. Don't have to worry about dust in New England. Too many trees for that. That area is beautiful, rugged but beautiful. Love the mountains. My grandpa used to find arrowheads all thru the fields when he did Spring planting. I never found any tho. Hope the family enjoyed the time in that area. Topography is very different but east coast is beautiful year round. Lots of shade. You two take care and aloha til next week. Looking forward to Linda's cooking.

Saw a vanlifer who got dust hammered into his van and had to do a deep cleaning. As long as we keep all the windows shut and the cab vent blowing in, we have no troubles. But, with the cab and truck camper window pass-through open for the cats, just driving with the door windows open above 30 mph will draw sewer gas in through the toilet and p-traps. Vent things out a couple minutes ans it's fine. The little surprises we discover along the way. My head gaskets arrive today.so looking forward to getting started on that project. Take care kids. Oh, neat trip to DC for the kids. Smithsonian?

@gonagain I decided it was too dang hot to start pulling the heads today again. I will go out and drain the radiator I'm already going to miss next weeks NW Truck Camper Rally near Wenatchee. That's ok though, it's going to be up to 110 there, and that's just too too hot. I'll do a quick engine degrease and hose off using the truck camper water heater. Got radiator/engine flush and buckets to drain fluids into. I have a painting suggestion for you, read Tow Sawyer, then get your grand kids over and use the methods used on them. You'll finish in no time and be a richer man for it. 😁😆😅🤣😂

Good God Almighty! Some of this footage (12:30 through 13:00 minutes) is glorious, indeed. Crisp, clean air! Intense, blue skies! Brilliant sun, the wonderful array of the earth and the flora of the high desert, my favorite places on Earth. The view we get a peek of from 7:50 to 8:00 is stunning. Working on my trailer galley these days! and I plan on traveling through the area you are in now some time in the early fall. Your hike (through 16 mins) is entertaining. Linda forgetting her "bear spray"... I was just moments earlier checking her belt for any appropriate accoutriments, see. Glad to hear you have yours, Rick. These things are like seatbelts, auto insurance, fire extinguishers... one hopes to never ever need them. That doesn't mean we cannot develop and maintain any proficiency in their usage, though. I believe the age of that tree would surprise all of us. I'd be more leery of mountain lions there than anything. I had one pursue me once in New Mexico and had no idea until I back tracked and saw it's tracks on mine, it could have had lunch at will. All I had was a good stick (which I immediately sharpened) and a knife, which was in my hand the rest of the day. Great Video.

Hey Rick, it’s very possible that old tree at the end is 3500-4500 years old. The Noation flood (Noah) of Genesis was about 4500 years ago when the water receded, and new life began. Another reason the Great Barrier Reef is about that old also. I have studied creation science and it’s fascinating the timelines and the layers in the rocks. Just like Linda even said when those Indians lived in that area where you were, the climate was probably different for foraging and farming even! Couple thousand years ago!

A very enjoyable video, Rick and Linda. The scenery is spectacular and I am very envious. We living here in Ontario also have great places to go but nothing on the scale of this video. We also still enjoy our 6x10 but a long trip to Newfoundland next year we are considering options.

Linda, your comment on fast acquisition holsters are very few if you are trying to conceal your firearm but there's one brand that might help and carry in public non-noticed the name of the company is (Sneaky Pete Holsters). This might be very helpful since the both of you carry backpacks. This can be wore with your shirt tucked in or outside with the tail of the shirt tucked behind the top of the holster or if it's winter, you can wear the holster with a belt over your coat.

Diamond D Custom leather in Wassila AK or PARADISE VALLEY LEATHER build a very nice chest holster. This puts it in a very convenient location and does not interfere with a back pack or when sitting .

Linda, I saw some around the waste style tactical fanny packs that have Velcro closures with two pull tabs, in addition to zippers. You can leave your CCP unzipped in the fanny pack and pull one of two tabs, depending on if you're right or left handed, ripping the Velcro closure open for immediate deployment.

Thank you for the that info! I'm looking into that style of fanny pack.

In about 2003 I was driving a lonely dirt road in West Texas. It got very windy and a giant dust cloud blew over the road and I went from 30mph to about 10 spinning my tires, due to lots of sand and top soil that was left on the road.

Driving through soft brush can be deceiving. I thought it was soft, but there was a 2" sawed off limb behind soft leaves. 2" branches don't give much on the side of a vehicle.😁 Lizards and toads eat ants. You probably scared it away from the ant buffet.

Linda - I have a Hill People Gear Chest Rig with a compatible holster velcro'd inside. I'm right handed and the HPG chest rig opens to the left - so left hand opens and right hand draws. It's quick.

I know it's the hard to carry ( whatever it is ;) comfortably) have you thought about mounting the bear spray just below your hand on your walking stick, just always have to be sure the stick is with you

I admire you investigative spirit, but you mentioned in today's video the thing I would be most uncomfortable about in some of the places you go. That is the danger of rapidly rising water from sudden rainstorms rushing down the road carrying everything along with it. It seems that would be more likely in areas where few people venture. Take care.

Was you being serious about your length ? Saying 25 ft. Your Sub is close to 19ft with hitch maybe over. I forget your trailer length. Ok 10 plus 4 ft hitch is 14ft. 22ft is pickup camper rig. I'm over 44 total. Big pickup! When I see pictures of paying camp sites people are parked sideways. I thought you could of got a spot just off that 2 lane cow trail. Yeah it was smooth but I don't think ever graded. That road you was on was long abandoned cow trail. Do you use a wheeled trailer jack? And carry a flat 3/4 piece of plywood. To spin your trailer around, looks like you should!

Hey Rick and Linda, I am responding to Linda's question about bear spray. I have googled and looked thru Amazon but could not find a perfect item for my idea on Linda carrying quick access bear spray, but my idea makes me think she should have something mounted to her hiking pole. I did find this and wondered if you could improvise something like this to mount it to a hiking pole... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edOBbMZ3mbLLd4k.htmlsi=z_jC8aRgOUD5GWjw Anywho... Just my thoughts... Stay safe, always, Cheryl Sorensen

I do wear it in the front when I remember it. I'd like one that I could keep the zipper unzipped or the pocket open, more like a holster would be. I guess the easiest thing would be to just wear an owb holster on my belt.
