Everyone had a first day in RC… EVERYONE! In Episode 018 of the RC Driver “Get Into RC” video series, we are going to talk about power connectors. Connectors play a huge role in your RC car. They are obviously the part that links the battery power to your speed control or other important functions like the connection from your servo to your receiver. There are lots of connectors available in the RC market and if you’re not careful about your connector planning from the start, you may find yourself with all sorts of equipment with different connectors and you may find yourself buying adapter or soldering connectors. Know about connectors and choose the right one from the start to make your hobby experience better as you progress. Here are some of the basics about connectors.

In summary: Go for XT connectors if you can solder. If you can't, learn how to solder and get the XT connectors. XT connectors are made of nylon, very high temperature resistant material, even the cheap ones. They don't have exposed leads and they have nice grooves inside of the bullets that you can solder into, making connections all around the cable. If you don't like XT connectors for some reason, go with EC connectors. Those are good too and pretty common. Deans connectors are no longer a viable option when starting out, they are hard to solder, the solder connections aren't that good since it is soldered only from one side, the leads are exposed, the material on the cheap ones can melt at high currents or high temperature. Traxxas connectors look nice, but they are a lot more expensive than all the other options. I would still pick XT connectors. Tamiya connectors - THROW THAT PIECE OF CRAP AWAY AND GET PROPER ONES! Banana plugs - I have no idea why anyone wants to use those for a battery connector. They dont have as snug a fit, they will loosen out fast. For smaller plugs you can take anything you can, there are those rectangle... things. You can use those.

I only use tamiya connectors, because I'm a cheap POS and don't like to change all my battery plugs.

Lagger Onesixfour if you understand the concept of soldering XT should be child’s play. And is it really worth it to switch all my stuff? My vendor has like 4 batts with XT60s on them so I’d have to solder battery side all the time too (no I won’t switch brands)

I agree with using the traxxas plug. I made the dumb change of going to the deens plug. I had the solder joints undo theselves. Went back to traxxas and havent a issue at all.

Thank you for this! I'm newer to the hobby, hobby grade that is since I've had a couple different RC toy vehicles growing up, and I didn't know what all the connectors were called. This helps a lot since I've been curious about different ones but couldn't find information about what each one was called.

Ive used Deans Ultra plugs for years i have used the Traxxas high Current Connectors my 2 favorite ones. Molex is least favorite but has been around since hobby rc been around

I initially had everything deans, and my recent cars and batteries came with ec5 so I am moving all high amp items to ec5 and have adapters 2 sets of ec5 to deans and vice versa so I am all set with deans and ec5.

If you’re dealing with an ARRMA raider (or other rc with tight spaces) deans is the most compact connector. I’m not sure if my RCs are being limited by the connector but that’s what I have. T connectors are the most annoying to solder though. Bullet style (such as XT) are stupid easy to solder.

Dylan White interesting, I don’t have experience with xt connectors but I find it’s pretty easy to solder deans/t connectors. Makes me want to try soldering xt connectors if they are that easy

I like the Deans Ultra plugs been using them on the My RC10T. Traxxas Connectors i like too.

I just purchased an armma typhon 6s,,,,most of my batteries are xt 90,,,,,is that compatible with the ec5 that come with the typhon,,,,just want to be sure,,,,love your stuff,,really helpful in my endeavors,,,thanks...jim

Hi, I have a Battery capacity checker (one of the many on sale) all have a NiCd/ NiMH three pin port on the top right hand side presumably the two top pins used. I want to check the voltage of my NiMH batteries but cannot find a suitable connector anywhere on the Net. I think Fatuba make one, but can you or anyone else tell me where i can get a connector and lead to a battery connector Traxxas or Dean. I have multiple (connectors). Thanks

Thank you! Still confused. I'm thinking the most important connection is between your battery and ESC. Everything else is kind of, one and done. So the question is, is there a "USB C" of RC cars for batteries?

I am making rc car with electric motors. Each motor is connected to a wheel so every wheel have a separate motor. So when i connect the 4 motors together to get same power how would i connect them in which order.

I lost the charger for my RC tugboat from HobbyEngine (manual says Atlantic, back sticker on the boat says South Hampton) and cannot figure out the darn plug connector. It looks like the first Tamiya you showed but smaller. The book said it's a 7V Nimh 800Mah battery but again I can't find that smaller version. Can u help?

Hey. Thank you for the video. It helped a bit. I need some help and Im not getting much support from my local hobby shops. My son fused his tamiya connectors together. Battery to car. He has an off road car. Can I please get some advice on what connectors I should use so this doesnt happen again? Thank you

How do you disconnect/unplug a T plug LiPo? I've been trying to pull both ends oppositely but the connector and battery do not disconnect. I don't wanna break anything and thus don't wanna use too much force. The connector and T-plug LiPo are definitely connected the right way, but disconnecting them seems unusually difficult? Just got my new RC car btw.

Do you mean they’re hard and difficult to disconnect? That’s common for deans (t plug) but once you use a lot it’ll be less difficult to disconnect

Hi I have two 4s 6700 mah lipos with inbuilt Id wires wanting to know weather I can just run an Id plug and an xt150 connectors and wondering if I can still use my traxxas charger that will be safe for charging threw a Dean's plug and cable to a traxxas plug for my charger can u help me please

james gordon I would say that you can always go bigger than needed, just don't do use smaller than rated.

Yes the 90 stands for 90 amps rated for you could run 8s no problem so 2s is fine

ray cimbalnik from what I have heard you would be taking a pretty big risk. I was told they can handle 4s but almost anything past that you are taking a risk

Traction, especially on 2wd vehicles. I used to run slippers as tight as I could get them and my RC's would launch off the line but I noticed I would lose it coming out of turns and I was going through rear tires like mad. So now I run slippers about half way and the trucks don't take off as fast but are much easier to handle under power.

Question about old Nimh 6 cell batteries. I have been out of the rc hobby for about 7 years. My son and I used to race at the Hobbyplex in Omaha,Ne. We used to run a variety of vehicles : Short course trucks 2WD and 4WD, touring cars and buggies. Most of his vehicles we did change over to using the 2S lipo batteries. I still have about a dozen Nimh 3300 and 4200 batteries but can not get them to restore to a useable condition. So I was wondering if there is a special way to restore them or do just go ahead and dispose of them. I appreciate any advice you can provide. P.S. I am a watcher of RC Driver on KZfaq, to help keep me informed on what's happening in the RC world. Keep it up. MERRY CHRISTMAS Thanks, Greg

Acually the title doesnt say what one to use it says to pick your perfect conectors. He is mainly talking about what conecters there are and if they are good or not and thats basically what the title says. To me this video was amazingly helpful

I started with a Traxxas RC and so naturally I purchased their battery and charger. When comparing to others I'm VERY glad I did. WhoTF needs their RC's battery to look like some kind of electronic octopus with 4 wires and two individual plugs dangling off? In addition, I find the Traxxas plugs more comfortable to my fingertips. I've purchased three RC trucks by two other manufacturers since my initial Traxxas RC purchase. I ordered the respective Female EC3 and EC5 to Male Traxxas adaptors from Amazon.com and all is good. Gasoline, Ethanal, and diesel all come out of mechanically similar pump handles. Motorcycle controls were standardized in 1974. Buy an E-vehicle or an electric RC and you need an inventory of electrical connectors or you're f*cked. Simply put; Electrical engineers are NOT to be trusted.
