That was great. I had no idea of these armies. So many name drops, Yeggi searches got a workout. Thanks for making me aware. I subbed.

I love how OPR explicitly stated the idea with the ornate designes of the SoB models is that you paint it all in one colour then use a wash to bring out the details and everyone unanimously went "Nah that's trim, I don't want to paint trim" I am also guilty of doing this lol

I was really hoping their Epic scale game was going to be part of their Vault subscription where you would be able to 3D print everything but when I saw that it was only a few models that were going to be available as STLs, I skipped the campaign. OPR is supposed to come out with Epic scale rules later this year so I'm going to wait for that.

We backed this on Frontiers. Very nice models, printed well, and the price is excellent. Plus, my wife likes the cheesecake aspect.

I think you forgot about one additional rule in regards to choosing an army which is quite important to me: How easy it is to modify the models? Are the parts seperate, or are they all monopose? While oftentimes you might miss a certain model you might like, it can be quite east to digitally kitbash a model you need in blender. For example, I created an interrogator lady from monopose battle sister torso+legs, custom arms from cults, hands with different custom weapons and a backpack from a black templar. All of that didnt require much blender knowlege, just the very basics of moving and scaling models like you do in a slicer already (and maybe cutting models, which in itself is not that hard). Thus if an army offers multiple different parts, you can easily apply them to different models (both in varied poses and varied loadouts)
@gaminggeek241
@gaminggeek241 5 ай бұрын
Yes, that is correct, although I've found it somewhat easy to digitally kitbash monopose models with some care in cutting parts. But as long as there is variety provided by the artist, I prefer not to do much kitbashing--even with Across the Realms, I wish he had affixed the heads on the STLs as they are currently printed separately so that you can swap out heads. But I understand you can have greater variety with more separated parts.

@@gaminggeek241Oh certainly. To each their own. For me the most important part is to make the mini "my own". Even back in the day when I was a kid I tried converting imperial guardsmen (my first conversion was to file toxic symbols from the flamethrower and have a guardsman wear it as a food carrier akin to soviet ones from WW2 :D ). For others it matters not. And I understand that. In regards to comfort of printing one thing, yeah I often also pre-assemble the model in blender and then print it whole, so all parts are pre-fitted exactly as I want. No filing, gluing or or corrections needed, so I understand that point of view as well. I think its a matter of preference, and I think at the end of the day STL makers can accomodate for all of us, as it is not that much work on their part (most people make models from premade parts anyways). One of the patreons I support a lot (GoodGameWargame) is a fantastic modelmaker and his files are great in that regard. Most of them are all given as: Presupported parts, unsupported parts and an unsupported ready model. That gives a lot of variety for everyone.

Where does the OPR group play? I've been expanding my Ork/Greenskin army enough that I think I'm about ready to try a full scale wargame but I can't restrict myself to GW only with all the other cool stuff out there. Was looking at Firefight as an alternative to 40k but didn't realize there was a OPR community here is STL.

We play at GameNite in Webster Groves, although players can decide where they want to meet. There isn't a regular time to play as individuals coordinate schedules on the Discord channel to figure out when and where to meet up. We'd be happy to have you join! Here's the link to the Discord channel: discord.gg/XfYPEb9x (I don't know how long this link lasts as they seem to expire after some time.)

Just saw that Dakkadakkastore has a Kickstarter running at the moment (15 days left as of today) with an "Order of Repentance" battle sister force. They, IMO, look much better than the cheesy pin-up force.

@@gaminggeek241They have APCs with an array of weapon turrets currently and bikes are up next, but I don't know if they have heavier vehicles planned. Don't know if the iconography and such could be merged with panels on heavier vehicles from elsewhere.

When you talk about holes, can you explain? Do you mean pre-hollowed models? When I first started to learn digital sculpting many creators said to pre-hollow when finished because variable thicknesses with the model can lead to trapped resin, so we are to create channels connecting the pockets. Less of a worry with multi-part models but can still happen. I personally do not like pre-hollowed models because I don't know if the maker connected those pockets themselves. Asking because anything that can help me design better for others' convenience helps. *Edit* Okay, I think when you mean "Holes" it is a different term than I learned. Seems those models are now non-manifold (but will say it has holes) when brought into the slicer. Perhaps the supports did something or another weird issue. I've seen that happen before. Had to resupport the same model.
@gaminggeek241
@gaminggeek241 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, I don't know if it is actual holes or if it's a manifold issue like you mentioned. And it might be a Lychee thing since that is the slicer I use. Finally, it might be issues with the supports since the models seem to print fine even when the slicer says it can't fix the model.

A problem I have with the battle sisters models is that a lot of the details are very shallow on the model's surface, making them very difficult to paint with transparent paints, as there isn't enough of a recess for the paint to sink into to give that heavy contrasted look. I agree with you about the aesthetic with the dresses, pointed shoulder pads and complexity of the design. They have a lot of complexity for complexity's sake, and I think overall the aesthetic isn't for me. I do think the fallopian tube design on the front of their skirts is very funny though lol
@gaminggeek241
@gaminggeek241 5 ай бұрын
Haha! I didn't notice the fallopian thing but now that you said it... So did you end up printing an alternative Sisters set?
@ohsohologramic
@ohsohologramic 5 ай бұрын
@@gaminggeek241 Like you I moved onto a different model type entirely, and decided against painting up an army of sisters. Then TOW came out and I moved my attention over to that instead, where I'm working on a night goblin army.
