Hi, thanks a lot for this. I have a super nerd and surely irrelevant question? Is there any standard pitch for old time music?

You are welcome! I'm not sure I understand the question...are you asking if old-time musicians tend to tune to A 440?

@@MattBrownsDream Exactly. Like baroque / pre classical music has his standard 415, or french baroque 390, etc. Is there any clue about the pitch these guys would use back in 1860 , i.e.? Thanks, Matt.

Can you play any tunes using only the two finger method? I practice 2 & 3 finger but oddly I seem to play smoother and more in rhythm with 2 finger vs 3 finger. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a pro/con to 2 finger over 3 finger. Thanks to all whom comment.

I find that I can play almost all old-time fiddle tunes and songs/ballads. Plus a surprising number of folk, country, bluegrass et al. songs.

I’m getting confused. I’m really interested in learning this style, but there seems to be discrepancies between instructions. Some say go “melody, 5th string, 1st string” and others say “melody, 1st string, 5th string”! Very confusing

Melody, 5th string, 1st string is the common thumb lead way of playing two-finger banjo. Thumb lead has the thumb travel across many of the strings while the index stays put on the 1st string. Melody, 1st string, 5th string is the same concept but for index lead. Index lead has the index finger travel across the strings while the thumb plucks mostly or only the 5th string. I prefer thumb lead, others prefer index lead. Try each and choose one, or commit to the approach used by your favorite performer in the style!
