Selecting the key for the songs we include in our worship services is a big part in creating an atmosphere that’s inspiring and inviting to worship. When picking a key, there’s a lot of discussion on how congregationly friendly that key is (for the average person to sing), but are there other things to keep in mind as well as we craft our services? What about picking the key because it’s the best key for the worship leader and his or her vocal range? I’m not sure how popular my opinion is on this topic, but at the very least I think it’s a point worth considering.
This video covers:
1. What to consider when selecting the keys of the worship sets songs
2. Why I believe we continue to use music in our worship services
3. Picking a key that best for the worship leader vs best for the congregation
4. Things to consider regarding the band when selecting a song key

This is SUCH an important issue. Thanks for asking the right questions! People in general aren't the most comfortable singing in public - why introduce additional barriers to congregational singing by choosing keys that are inaccessible to untrained singers? Can I share a new piece of software I'm working on to instantly analyze key selection for a song - with no need to hear the song or see the sheet music?

Love the video, I feel like I am always the outlier to requesting keys to songs ( I like original key). But I appreciate the understanding of others now. I miss making music with you in Oklahoma. Much love from Houston.

This was really good and balanced. I really appreciate this one. Also, sidebar, I didn't see your usual mic this time, what mic setup did you use for this video?

Harvest Church I've been using a Rode VideoMic Me off and on as a shotgun mic. It's designed to clip directly to the iPhone, but I typically put it on a mic stand just out of frame at the top. Works like a champ!

Just came across your channel looking for info about CCLI vs One License. Great channel! I have used CCLI for many years but the pastor asked me to look into One License because of a conference she attended this past week. Are you familiar with One License? From the research I have done it seems to be for a Traditional worship environment.

I'm not familiar with One License, but just quickly looking at their pricing, CCLI appears to be cheaper than One License. CCLI is the king in this space (just like Planning Center is the king in the space of worship ministry scheduling and rehearsal). I'm be curious to know what you find out as you do your research!

Thank you for your response. The pastor said that she would get me in touch with the person that taught her class who had said that One License was more comprehensive. I still don't see how in regards to contemporary worship. I will be speaking with him in the next couple weeks so I will message back. My inclination is to agree that CCLI is the king just like PCO which I have also used both for many years. Again I really enjoy your channel and binge watched a bunch of videos after discovering it yesterday. Even showed a few to my team. Thank you again!

Hmmm... why did we not have this issue years ago? Since the introduction of the internet worship keys have gone out the window!!! Now we can search and print whatever key we like. Not always a good thing! Remember when we had a songbook or folder with 1 key option per song! I really think congregational worship has become too performance oriented....'lets use a click track, backing track so we sound exactly like Hillsong or Bethel!!' Basically congregational worship is for the congregation!! Use a key that is friendly for the congregation. For maximum participation in worship, we need to sing songs in keys that the average singer can sing...not for Chris Tomlin or Kari Jobe! The range should fit an average singer. The highest note should be a D with an occasional Eb allowable. The lowest note should be an A. Just sayin!!

I completely disagree w this video Imho it’s way more important to try to find the most congregational friendly key, it’s not about the worship leader it’s about everyone being able to sing to the lord in a comfortable key

you talk too much. 😕
Should you expect to play on Sunday if you don’t come to rehearsal?
