Several ways to pick up stitches along a garter edge.
0:00 Intro
2:15 Using dpn to pick up in advance
3:50 Picking up side of selvedge stitch (my favorite method)
5:08 Picking up the middle of the selvedge stitch (the purl bumps) (The frowns, not the smiles like I say in the video!)
7:15 Picking up in between the selvedge and the next stitch (the normal spot for seaming)

This is just what I needed to know. I was having trouble visualizing where to pick up for the button band on my garter stitch kimono. I agree that option 1 looks like the way to go for a smooth, neat and tidy pickup.

So if you knit 36 rows you pick only 18 ?

Yes! To be absolutely accurate, you should check your row gauge versus your stitch gauge and pick up using that ratio, but a general rule of thumb for garter is that for every two rows of garter you pick up one stitch.
