As a Sri Lankan I can never forget this day in my life , my country was hit the second hardest after Indonesia , but for us it’s the deadliest natural disaster ever . Remember we were in our aunts house that day , where less than 10 km away from the coast that got hit . Remember everyone , almost everyone was crying . Didn’t know what was happening since I was only 5 , but on our way back home there were fishing boats , broken building all over the street . One of the darkest moments in my life

I traveled through Sumatra for 2 months in 1983, and spent a few weeks in Banda Aceh and surrounding area. Beautiful area with beautiful people. When I heard about the 2004 tsunami I wanted so badly to hop a plane and join in the rescue efforts, but I knew I would probably have just been in the way. I'm so happy to see the area recovered and wish all the people the very best. Love from Canada.

i also remember that time when i was like 3 years old. The earthquake hit really strong even me and my elder brother crawling on the ground or squat cuz if we stand it makes our head dizzy. I dont live in aceh but in Medan, its still in the same province (north sumatera). I remember all the adult people shout tsunamiiii tsunamiii runnn. Water is rising etc.. My father turn on the motorcycle and bring me and my elder brother(he was 10 yo) to the hills. Then my dad came back again to pick up my mom to save her to the hill or evacuation area. We waited for 30 minutes but still nothing happened. Thanks God tsunami didn't hit my city. We all were cried and praying for gratefulness to God. But we prefer to stay in evacuation area for one to two days to anticipate if something bad might happen suddenly. After all safe. We came back to home with a quarter of our house were broken so does all my neighbors house. But we sti thankful that we are alive . We watch the news and tv all about earthquake and tsunami. We cried to watch aceh.

I had a pen pal since elementary I kept up with well after high school and she never got to write me for 2005. I thought in the commotion maybe she lost my address or our letters. I wrote her 3x and no reply. I waited a year with hope I would get something when nothing ever came I dug a little deeper and she was listed among the dead. So now I keep her letter as one of my most prized possessions. Love your people while you can.

The footage of Indonesia of this event is the most horrifying, chilling I've seen. No images of the wave actually hitting were captured. There is hours and hours of footage of all the other badly affected areas of the waves approaching but not Indonesia, because there were no survivors. That is how deadly those waves were.
@eb3674
@eb3674 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve always wondered why there is no footage of the first waves hitting the coast of Indonesia. All the footage taken in the city Banda Aceh was located about 2 miles inland when the water kept coming in a form of a giant flood. But it makes sense because if anyone by the coast that wasn’t on high ground recorded the waves was most likely killed. The first Tsunami wave that hit Banda Aceh was 50 to 80 ft high and the other waves of the Tsunami that hit other parts of Indonesia were 100 to 115 ft high, on the whole west coast of Aceh Sumatra. All the towns on the coast were destroyed. Much bigger waves than in Thailand and Shri Lanka. Not everyone knew what a tsunami was so they weren’t prepared.

@@shaheenamobin4721 we muslims believe that Allah save his homes (masjeed). But if u want to know the structures u can google the pictures of masjeed in aceh. People in aceh have built strong buildings structures for many many years, my mother's house was built in 1985 and Alhamdulillah still stand until now even after many small earthquakes and 3 big earthquakes, the 3 big earthquakes are : 9 Richter Scale in dec 2004, 8.5 RS in march 2005, and 8.5 RS in 2012. The house wasnt built by architect, it was built by traditional builders who never learn architecture. Earthquake often happens in aceh thats why traditional builders in aceh have knowledge to build strong buildings even though they never learn architecture, thats why when strong earthquake happens, there was only non to minor damages to buildings. Thats why the cost to build a house in aceh is very very expensive. On dec 26th 2004, all buildings were destroyed by tsunami, only a few destroyed by earthquake because the land collapsed, at that time no buildings survived against tsunami but masjeeds survived, because Allah saved it.

I'm an Indonesian from another city in Sumatra who has been living in Aceh for a whole year since 2020. After socializing with the locals for an entire year, i can tell you that the reason of why people not being able to find jobs is mostly because of the lack of investment in the city (or the whole province in general). Also, many, if not most of the rich people of Aceh like to move out of the province once they get rich instead of trying to invest in their own home province. It's sad. Really. Many of those rich Aceh people like to move out to Medan City in the neighboring province and spend their money there.

I heard this too, that the local regulation in Aceh make investors hard to come. I believe that Aceh has abundant natural resources and beautiful nature but if there is no capital, no investor, the people of Aceh cannot utilize it. I once had friends from Aceh who are now studying abroad. I hope this young generation is willing to come back to Aceh and build their region. I hope the local government also have some kind of flexibility and innovation to increase their economy.

This happened in 2004 where technology wasn't as advance as now. We were never seen something like this and was so unprepared. People had no idea about what they could be facing after the earthquake happened. This was the time the world learned about "Tsunami". There were no footage when tsunami hit and there were only footage of destruction after, because those who recorded wasn't survive. The impact was not only on Aceh but also view countries nearby. This disaster made the world learned from it and could prepare to minimal the destruction after earthquake occurred. Pray for all who passed away and may Allah give us safety.

I was in Australia at the time, once in a life time holiday, we had been on bondi beach Christmas Day and me & my sister were In complete shock over the size of the waves. Then when this happened we was just in utter shock, being English it’s rare we even get in the sea, so we would of never known what to do! The worst part was when we was on our way home we stopped at Singapore, but wasn’t allowed of the plane due to the airport having bodies in and using it to fly families and bodies back to their home country. I was 13 at the time and remember everything as it happened. My heart still breaks thinking about it happening, along with the one in Japan, such frightening scenes!

Suddenly I fell and my mom grab us two and said that “GEMPA (earthquake)!!”. Every neighbour already outside their home. All the building cracked because of the unbelievable shaking. Everybody was afraid at that time. When things get better, we decided to get in our house. My mom clean the house and I was eating in front of the tv. My mom was shocked. Silent and crying at the same time. The strong earthquake that happen to us also happen to them, even stronger (9,1). We lost half of our family in Aceh. I will always remember that time.

The big take away from watching stuff like this is how important it is to understand the world around us. It may never come to that, but if it does, you're better equipped to spot danger and what to do to survive. Listening to these people it's clear they didn't realize what that an earthquake could cause a tsunami or that a large sudden retreat of the ocean meant a tsunami was imminent.

I was in medan and banda aceh in May 2005..5 months later with a relief team for 20 days..it was a total mess..I ve not seen any thing that measures up..they had already buried dead in mass graves..tried to dozer the sunk villages..lots of damage to coast line and the streams...it would one day rebuild. But this area is very poor..no jobs.no economy..not much hope..just a very small economy..no investment..I guess it's better now. With some investment...r j....they would get some sheds built back..there was very little work there
