Not the case. Some standard Daschunds have back problems especially if they become overweight - I have the mini type and he is fit and agile at 5 years old. Don't generalise it's very negative!

Yes, as they have longer backs it is more likely for them to have back problems therefore you have to be careful supporting them when you pick them up etc. However i have two miniature dachshunds who are about 8 and 6 years old and they are two very sweet, happy and energetic dogs. We have always been careful picking them up and looking after them properly but they do everything any other dog does and their backs didn't "give way" at two years old, and neither are they in "a lot of pain". As for other comments about dachshunds biting (not your comment specifically) it depends on how they are 'raised' - my dogs have never bitten anyone! So in conclusion this breed is not unhealthy if like any dog, looked after properly! Yes there are precautions but for example my mum's dachshund lived a very happy life till 17.

What Im trying to say is that IN GENERAL these dogs have more health/back problems than other breeds. Therefore the breed is not a great choice. I think it is quite selfish to have a dog that is almost guaranteed to have health problems in it's later life when there are a lot of other dogs that look just as 'cute'. These dogs shouldn't be bought for the sake of the dogs.

My husband & I have 2 miniature dachshunds 14&16 years old and neither have back problems. Most of the issues result from owners thinking it's "cute" for them to sit on their hind legs for treats or letting them jump off beds & couches.

rebekkiej every breed has its own problems. i have had 4 daschunds in my life and non of them have or had back problems.

+GodGamerz What breeders sometimes do is take a washcloth and rub it all over the puppies kin (like their genitals and behinds). Then they give it to the owner for the puppy to sleep with for a few weeks so it feels more comfortable. That's what we did when I got mine about 6 years ago and I thought it was a fantastic idea.

1. I volunteer at the local animal shelter on my days off. I take them to the dog park, I take them on walks, I try to get them adopted, and I also just sit in the cages or in the outside cages with them and give them loving attention. 2. I CAN'T adopt a dog because my landlord won't allow ANY pets of ANY kind inside the apartments. In this shitty town and the shitty towns all around me, there are VERY FEW apartment complexes and they're always completely full. Those people who rent out their houses won't allow pets or are extremely picky about certain ones. 3. Maybe the people who are complaining are in the same predicament as I am or gee whiz, this may be difficult to understand but maybe they HAVE adopted a dog! I won't hate her but I will DEFINITELY disagree and dislike what she did because she SHOULD have gone to the shelter instead of giving money to someone who breeds dogs SOLELY for the purpose of getting more money. People have the right to voice opinions such as this because it is good to educate. Maybe some of these people just don't want a dog or a cat or can't afford one and there's nothing wrong with that. They still wouldn't be the ones supporting these greedy fucking dog breeders. Still, she should have adopted a dog. Natasha Richardson Hahha I noticed that too. I'm a big advocate of adoption and have volunteered at shelters across the world but I was still cringing at that person.

Some people want a specific breed or want to raise a puppy. I'm almost 100% positive they adopted Woofy (who was a cross breed), and they would've adopted when they got Treacle and Squidge if they didn't want to raise two puppies together. My partner works at an animal shelter and I volunteer there and we adopted our cat together. But when we get a puppy one day, unless we find a puppy at a shelter that is a breed we are after, we will probably end up buying from a breeder. It doesn't make you a bad person buying from a breeder. The only time it would be bad is if you bought a puppy from a puppy farm (which Fleur and Mike obviously didn't)

I agree. Not everyone wants to adopt. All 3 dogs I've had have been from breeders. I have nothing against adoption i think it's wonderful but not a dogs adopting are the best. We don't know their past and something in your life could disrupt theirs and it could become a dangerous situation

Shelter dogs have usually had a tough life of abuse or neglect. That doesn't mean they're undeserving of a home, all they want is care from you and they'll love you forever 🐶🐱 Every time you buy from a breeder, an animal in a shelter loses a chance at ever having a loving home, that's all they want nothing big just love ☺️😛

A lot of dogs in shelters have been surrendered by their owners because the owners can no longer care for the dogs (whether it be for health problems, financial circumstances, moving, etc.) Dogs in shelters are socialized with people and other animals daily. They're not damaged goods; oftentimes, they're the most loving dogs you'll ever find.

Yes, don't buy a puppy from a poor breeder who does not have their dogs' best interests at heart and is over-breeding, keeping their dogs in poor conditions, or breeding irresponsibly without doing appropriate genetic testing etc, but that doesn't mean you should be painting all breeders with the same brush. Dog breeding is a very poor way to make money if done responsibly regardless - the price is just as much to discourage impulse buying from people who have not fully thought through purchasing a dog as it is to support their hobby (hence the reason it's becoming increasingly mandatory to put a price on animals up for adoption - and yes, hobby, not business...)

LumiNeonz There are some breeders that are more responsible than others. But there is no such thing as a responsible breeder. Adding more members to a population that is already dying en masse due to the size of their population for the sake of making yourself money is inherently irresponsible and sick no matter how they do it.
