“Bass Ackwards” = epic phrase Rory describing that backhand volley that got away from the lady in the first pink shirt.

Thanks to your videos and tips you have given I have moved up to 3.5 for 8 have learned how to do drops and stop fast spin hits that many 3.0 players like to do. I played a game with players exactly like this and it felt that the balls hit to me were just easy. When I played with the 4.0/4.5 players to see it was like the game was very fast and competitive. Thankfully the players were nice to coach me to how I can improve become a 4.0 player

Good analysis. If forget the names of the pro players, but there is more than one who switches paddle hands. Granted, switching hands in this particular video instance was more a lack of preparation and proper footwork. But I’d never say never for hand switching, some people are very successful at it.

Those of us who have played baseball or softball are more adept at switching hands. I disagree coach, some have success with it, granted not in lieu of moving one’s feet

Good video. The near court looked like they had potential to be much better but yes, basic strategies are glaringly absent. I will say that I know a couple 4.0s and 3.5s that change hands. They use it mainly for shots that would otherwise be awkward backhands that put them out of position and the resulting shots are usually nice drops into the kitchen. Nothing hard hit and they have good back hand power shots. Off hand is just for the shots that they would otherwise have to dig or return by crossing their leg over and reach with their backhand to get to. It really is effective and they are quicker to get back into position than if hey hit backhands.

I get it. Some people can do it. I played 20 minutes ago with the player who switched hands four times in one game. He hit the ball into the net every time he did it. LOL! Thanks for watching.

Except that you can’t point to a single pro player that switches hands; so it must be something amateur players do to mask otherwise bad mechanics.
@929mmr
@929mmr 6 ай бұрын
@@dmills7375 I've seen pros do it but not on a regular basis. I wouldn't go so far as to say bad mechanics but yeah, extremely few amateurs have the agility and footwork that the pros do. Why would it be bad mechanics if they do it well and consistently? Not everything should be held up to whether pros do it. We have a guy that has a very nasty backhand serve. Should he stop doing it because I can't point to a pro that also does it?
@929mmr
@929mmr 6 ай бұрын
@@pickleballpick-apart9787 Lol. I want to play the guy you played. I'm not promoting it or saying everyone can do it. I have never done it and have no plans to. It is not a pro move. One of the 4.0 guys isn't very agile but really controls the net that way. I hit shots that I think should set him up or get him out of position and he just casually flicks it over and is back in position. It's kind of like lobs, which I know you hate. Its not generally recommended but there are some players that are just good at it.

Good analysis, but I think there might be a bit more nuance around short returns. Today I - 3.5 on the cusp of moving up to 3.75 - was playing a guy who was very good at the baseline. Good footwork, good placement, moderately wicked spin. But he wasn't the fastest moving around the court. So, since his partner's serve was a bit on the marshmallow side, I started doing second-shot drops on his side. He never got even one, and we won a previously-even game pretty easily. It's not something I'd recommend in general, but in the right situation I feel it can definitely be a good strategy.

Good analysis. You hit the nail on the head when you said what distinguishes a 3.0 level player from a higher level player is hitting the ball with purpose. I’d even argue that “getting to the NVZ” is secondary to knowing why you want to be there…and what to do once you get there. This video is deceiving, because as you pointed out they are pretty competent at keeping the ball in play. That first rally was unusually long for a 3.0 match and would cause some to believe these are higher level players than they are. 👍

Exactly. Some people watching the first point would think they're 4.0 because they didn't make any unforced errors. But, as I pointed out, they were hitting the ball with no intent. Your comments are spot on. Thanks for watching.

That first rally didn't make me think they were a higher level but it did make me think that they could be. I've seen 3.0 and below play where I thought this is as high as their talent and skill level can go. A couple of these women in the video had talent to be better than 3.0 with some coaching. They had some smooth strokes. Just my opinion.

In some tournaments 3.0 is the lowest level offered. Maybe that was the case here? Without any strategy, court presence, or the ability to hit a drop or a drive, maybe these players need a couple of clinics to be an actual 3.0

Due to an injury to my right shoulder I began playing left handed, I continued getting the exercise I needed. I can now play with both hands, I guess I will never be a pro ,don’t make it a set rule I do pretty good switching hands

Kudo's to them for playing but all of them have extremely poor mechanics. They would all benefit from instruction starting at Ground Zero. I see this type of play at our Local Drop In with players who consider themselves Strong Intermediates. In reality if you Snow Ski down an Easy Run doing SnowPlow then your still considered a " ", regardless of the number of years you have been skiing.
