Pickling is the removal of oxidised surfaces and/or flux from metal or jewellery after soldering, using either a specialised pickling powder or liquid pickle solution. Learn more about the process of pickling and how to pickle jewellery in this video.
If you use heat when making handmade jewellery, it is essential that you know how to set up a pickle pot so you can pickle your pieces and then start polishing them. Follow these simple steps to get started...
- Clean out a ceramic or glass pot and fill with clean water
- Add your chosen pickle acid to the water according to the label instructions, ensuring you add the acid to the water and not the other way around
- Gently heat the pickle solution to speed up the cleaning process, keeping a consistent heat and not allowing the solution to boil
- Place your metal items into the acid pickling solution using either plastic or brass tweezers
- Regularly check on the item, leaving it in the pickle pot until clean
- Once the piece has been cleaned sufficiently, remove it from the pickle solution and rinse under running water
