I randomly watched this movie years ago, rented it from the library, and... I found it weird and kinda boring, I didn't really get it. But it was so haunting that it stuck with me, almost like a strange dream. I forgot the title and the specifics of the plot, but remembered the dreamy (almost drug-induced) atmosphere, the sense of a force the girls seem to come to know but we never see, the way it's never clear what actually happened... I'd actually like to watch it again.

As a child, I remember this movie always stuck with me. I remember my dad put this on, I asked him a few times what the ending meant. I don't think I remembered the answer, well if there was one to begin with but it was always very haunting. You never see what happens and that's what's so mysterious about it.

One of my favorite films ever. The haunting pan pipes and slow motion shots give out such an ethereal feeling. Totally Freudian imagery and themes of burgeoning female sexuality. Leaving childhood and becoming a woman. Also the rock is totally phallic. Saw this first when I was an 11 year old boy and the actress playing Miranda mesmerized me with her beauty. A cinema masterpiece.

australian accents sounded alot more british back then than they do now i've noticed that from other aussie movies from the 70's too.

@girlinthestorybook8276 3 жыл бұрын
True, but it was also a sign of social class. This is set in a very posh boarding school, so speaking with a British accent was a sign of sophistication. You can hear more aussie accents from other male characters (can't remember any names). Also, up until the 70s, news anchors in Australia had to speak with a British accent, as it sounded more 'proper'. I'm not sure, but it was probably similar for movies and TV shows. The point is, I don't think movies are a true reflection of how it really was.

@@girlinthestorybook8276 i've watched other things from the same period that were interviews on the streets and stuff and even then it sounds alot more english than it does now. it's alwasy been similar to english but definitely moreso back then at least from what my foreign ears can tell. i've never been myself but from what i can hear it sounds like it's becoming more americanized these days and i know alot of people down there are very unhappy about it which i can well understand. i also think that sucks i like diversity in speech. even over here our regional accents are disappearing which is lame.
@girlinthestorybook8276

@@NoirL.A. That is true about street interviews. You're probably right! But about the American influences, I think some American words are being used more than the Australian equivalent these days, which is definitely a pity. However, I don't think that our accent has become American, at all.

@@girlinthestorybook8276 a buddy of mine was there about a year before covid and he said alot of especially teenagers it's not just the words or phrases it was the accent itself sounded like a weird australian/american hybrid which really surprised him because he like me grew up in L.A. where there's more australians than any other city outside australia besides london and we're both used to australian accents being understandable but definitely quite different and real similar to english accents. i thought it was just a youtube thang but he said it shocked the fuck out of him he never expected it. either way i hope yer right i also think it will suck if we "all talk the same" so to speak i much prefer diversity even if it means sometimes understanding is temporarily prevented. canadians pretty much all sound american now (wasn't always the case) and our regional accents are disappearing here too it's sad but i suppose an unintended side effect of modern media.

@@NoirL.A. As an Australian I have no idea what your friend is talking about! I have never heard people speaking like that. But either way the loss of language diversity is definitely a real shame.

Where can I buy this movie in the old picture quality such as this trailer? All the DVD’s and blu rays on the market are either digitally remastered or clear picture quality. I want to watch this movie in the old picture quality because it provides a more eerie feeling to the movie and an insight to how movies made in that era were. Hope you know what I mean.

I’m currently on a summer road trip in the Appalachian Mountains of the USA, and today I visited a town in North Carolina named Blowing Rock. I texted the friend who suggested I go there and said, “I’m at Hanging Rock,” and she said, “You mean Blowing Rock?!” And it dawned on me that I erroneously called it Hanging Rock because of this movie, which is obviously living in my subconscious, for good reason. 🤣

What we see and what we seem are but a dream. A dream within a dream. You must learn to love someone else, apart from me, Sara. I won't be here much longer. Good morning, girls.Good morning, Mrs Appleyard. Well, young ladies, we are indeed fortunate in the weather for our picnic to Hanging Rock. I have instructed Mademoiselle that as the day is likely to be warm, you may remove your gloves once the drag has passed through Wood End. We will partake a luncheon at the picnic grounds near the rock. Once again let me remind you the rock itself is extremely dangerous. You are therefore forbidden of any tomboy foolishness in the matter of exploration, even on the lowest slopes. Miranda? Miranda! Miranda, don't go up there, come back!

Don't know of a movie where male actors are seen and then their lines overdubbed with "real" actors voices and who go silenced and uncredited. Part of the horror machine of patriarchy that females are bits and pieces to be cobbled together by a couple of guys.
