So I just finished writing my dissertation on the digestibility and amino acid quality in terms of athletic performance. I evaluated two plant based foods, pea and rice, two insect sources, crickets and mealworm with two animal sources whey protein and beef steak using in vitro digestion models, unanimously animal and insect came out on top for % digestibility and total amino acids. Especially in terms of leucine quality plants just came out less effective. This was a pilot in sorts and for dissertation work not actually published work but still eye opening how effective insects are as a potential source of essential proteins

Very true, and ecologically far less damage done to the planet using insects. People really need to understand bioavailability before comparing animal and plant sources, it's a huge difference between the two, animal sources are all far more useful than plant sources. I'm most interested if there will be a way to make plant protein powders more bioavailable by combining them or adding specific amino acids to balance out the profile

I do still eat broccoli or cauliflower sometimes, but vegetables no longer interest me, and the oxalates they contain are harmful, especially over time. As far as protein powder goes, I’m fully in the plant-based camp. I used to do whey, but it was so hard on my digestive system, and ever since I switched my stomach and bowel movements have been much better. Yeah, it may not have the best absorption, but I already way overshoot my protein goals and it’s worth feeling more comfortable in my day to day. Bad thing is I am lazy and hate to research about food and I just couldn't count calories all the time so I decided to invest in a meal plan from Next Level Diet. Best thing I got myself in life so far :) I lost so much fat and got so much more energy when I started eating healthy.

The title seems a little misleading given what was actually discussed in the video... It almost seems like clickbait that panders to plant-based dieters based on the lack of evidence favouring a plant diet. As a starting point, I am myself an omnivore. But I have nothing against anyone’s lifestyle choices and think that most people would benefit from a more plant-based diet than they are currently consuming. Potential biases aside, I found the fact pattern to lack observational and logical evidence supporting the premise. First of all, there were only 2 studies shown researching plant protein diets and hypertrophy, and even if we ignore the complete lack of evidence to make any conclusive takeaway, there was nothing in this video to suggest plant proteins were better (which is implied by saying they’re the “answer”). This makes the title misleading and scanning the comment section, the overwhelming majority of commenters seem to be self-congratulatory plant-based dieters who are seeing this as validation for their dietary choices. Regarding the logical evidence, there’s a clear gap in logic. You stated that a plant-based dieter would need multiple sources to get a complete amino acid profile. That means that you’d have to eat each veggie source in equal ratios to get scale each amino acid up to the right level. You also added a red herring to say that you can combine plant sources.. but that is indeed an issue. You can’t say “but you can just combine plant sources so disregard the lower protein completeness” without sharing how much of each source you’d need to reach an equivalent level of animal protein. That’s where it falls apart and adds complexity.. You can also combine each meat source with other meat or plant sources (meat and vegetable) to make a superior meal from a nutrient profile perspective without needing to worry about food ratios or meal complexity. The data shared also doesn’t account for the rate of protein absorption and synthesis which is very different even between protein sources (e.g. egg protein absorbs at 2g an hour vs whey at 8g). And the most egregious point not addressed is around food quantity. Eating enough veggies to get optimal protein for hypertrophy / during a cutting phase in a trained individual is already hard with meat sources.. The sheer volume of veggies you would have to consume to reach some macronutrient and calorie goals is absurdly high. With all that said, an omnivorous diet seems to provide the best nutritionally speaking, and meats seem to be an overall better source for complete proteins. Can you build muscle as a vegetarian or as a vegan? Absolutely. Is it more optimal or efficient than incorporating meat and dairy sources for many people’s hypertrophy and physique goals? It seems at best similar but in all likelihood, less optimal. Optimizing everything and maximizing your hypertrophy is clearly not everyone’s goal and there are more important things to people. But I found nothing compelling in this video to shift my current stance on the protein source debate and I was disappointed by the polarizing title. Not a great PicFit video in my opinion.

Useful comment. But also, 100 grams of soy protein powder gives us WAY more amino acids that we need. So that one isnt a problem. The problem for me with a plant based diet is that i have to live entirely on soy to meet my protein goals (200 g per day and with help from a protein blend made of soy, wheat and pea). Soy is the only plant based food that can compare with meat from an amino acid and protein perspective. But it gets pretty repetive to eat soy in different forms everyday! The other nutrients other than b12 comes naturally with a varied diet. Ofcourse people are gonna get sick if theyre living on vegan nuggets, sausage, burgers etc. Like any other diet. I also really didnt catch the title in this one. It felt like a bait indeed, which is not the picturefit we know today. As soon as i saw the title i knew what the comment section would look like. Replies are gladly appreciated.

@PPEcon 2 жыл бұрын
@@strongandbigman Thanks for your response. I’d have to pushback on soy though. It’s actually not great plant-based source of complete protein on its own (54/100 PDCAAS vs 70-80 in TVP and 63 in lentils) which is why the protein powder you’re referring to has wheat and peas added as well. So it’s not really a “soy” as much as it’s a “plant-based” protein powder with soy as the main ingredient (which makes sense because it’s cheap). Additionally, soy is also very fat-dense, making it less efficient to use as a primary protein source during a cut where eating whole, solid foods for most of diet helps a lot with sustainability. Regarding the amounts you mentioned, 100G of soy protein is 88G (335 calories) from what I saw online which isn’t enough protein on its own and is already a lot of protein powder.. 200G seems like an unpleasant amount compared to using mixed meat and plant-based sources. That said, you already raised the dietary challenge behind consuming the high amounts of plant-based protein powder in such high quantities as a primary source and at the right amount, it is indeed possible for sure. Overall your point is well taken that you can meet your protein goals using protein powders and I think your comment presents added nuance to the discussion.

I consume a 95% plant-based predominant diet. For the exact reason of diversity of foods = diverse microbiome. There are between 250 000 to 300 000 edible plant species out there. 75%% of the food produced in the world comes from using 12 to 20 different plant species (using monoculture which is a fuck up) and 5 to 7 animal species. The 5% animal foods are mostly fish /seafood, wild meat (game) and eggs. I don't do well with saturated fat (liver genetics etc.). So I don't eat pork, beef, lamb or any farmed animals really. Also not a big fan of the taste. Recently got over chicken, as it was my protein of choice ever since I was in school up until I came to varisty, so just over it. But now I got so many options out there and my gut is loving it. Also, I recently just got my gut health back on track due several health issues and now eating a diverse range of foods is medicinal. My gut health is great. My mood is a lot more stable. It's fuckin' skits. Experiecing variety, diversity and adversity breeds adpatability.

I don't think there's ever been a claim that by combining plant proteins it isn't possible to reach a full protein profile. There's vegan literature on the topic decades old. One thing however that I feel this video rather fails to touch upon is the question of just how much rice, potatoes, soy beans and wheat you need to eat to get all that protein you want. And more importantly how much carbs and calories are coming along for the ride. Since we're talking about ingredients on a plate here and not only simply isolated powder in a tub.

Exactly. The problem is usually with digestion of the whole food, not just supplements. And there’s one more thing the studies didn’t check: Giving the plant-based diet to omnivores, both in short and long term. Personally, for example, I’ve experimented extensively with vegan protein supplementation and diet, and the more time I spent with it the worst it got for my health. To the point where a small side of soy would make me feel like there was a balloon inside my stomach for days. And, again, that got *worse* with time, not better. So it wasn’t a case of “getting my gut biome specialized for it.” Meanwhile, whey and most of all meat (specially red meat) makes me feel like I didn’t even eat anything. It has zero effect on my mental clarity and focus, and I feel like I have infinite energy. So what matters most in the end is what it does to an individual. And I suspect most individuals have a much easier time digesting and making use of animal derived proteins. The studies giving plant-based diets only to long-term-vegans completely biases the result away from what would be applicable to the general population. It’s a selection bias. The ones who do well digesting vegan protein are precisely the ones who have been vegan for years. To test the general application for the average individual the distribution of diets must be RANDOMIZED in a sample that’s representative of the average population. Not given to “Long term vegans.” And to find out whether it works for an individual (like you or me), the only way is testing it out.

My protein powder is even plant based because I can't do whey, but you have to admit that it's way easier to get "enough" protein from animal/plant sources than just plant sources in most cases. Seitan is a great source of protein, but outside of that, there's not much else that can compare to something like fish or chicken when it comes to protein per gram of food. 100g of chicken is about 31g of protein. 100g of tofu (which is usually a chicken substitute in food dishes) is roughly 10g. Complimentary EAA's is not new information and still doesn't prove that plant protein is anywhere close to animal protein. First, protein being bound by fiber makes it LESS absorbable, second the calorie to protein ratio is simply unsustainable when it comes to plants. For instance, 75 calories worth of peas yields about 4g of protein, while 75 cals worth of lean meat yields about 15g protein. There's really no comparison.

i began eating a lot more plant based foods, but nothing beats convinecnce of an egg. Every essencial thing is there and tons of ways to prepare. Need to satiate before school/work? Some boiled eggs with mustard will make me full. Need to reach my protein goals without feeling stuffed? Make scrambled eggs with however many eggs you want, 4 to 8 in my case, eat it with lavash or toast bread. Leftover rice from dinner? Crack open one to make egg-fried-rice and another one as topping. Salad? No problem add some tuna and/or hard boiled egg with djon mustard and you got a super nutritious salad that makes you full. Since I decided to not buy protein powder due to being a student in a country with economic crisis I got creative with eggs that my parents buy for me lol. I will spend my money for much cheaper creatin.

It’s not really about combining food it’s about getting enough calories to get enough amino acids. Which if you just look up the amino acid content in foods from 1 serving you’ll quickly realize it’s not gonna take some strict diet where you just barely get enough. It’s impossible to not get enough amino acids even if you were eating just 1 food which we aren’t even doing. To further steelman and say the amino acids might be only 50% absorbed in comparison to animal it still doesn’t matter in a realistic day of eating. The incomplete protein thing comes from an old cookbook, the author of which realized her mistake years later but by then the damage had been done. Search Dietary Protein and Amino Acids in Vegetarian Diets A Review and go to page 6 to see an accurate absorption comparison. Interesting thing is that none of the sources plant or animal are 100% absorbed, the average is a 90% absorption rate. 95% was the highest. They note that the plant sources were from low quality ingredients at that

I still see a big issue. Getting your fair share of protein is relatively easy having a diet that contains animal protein sources. Mainly because you have several option of almost pure protein and no fats or carbs. On the other hand, plant based protein sources come with high contents in other macronutrients, which makes it harder to get a balanced diet or more commonly a weight loss diet. For instance, white beans contains 17g of protein per 100g, but also 44g of carbs (ratio of 2.6 carbs/proteins). Green peas, 6g of protein and 12g of carbs per 100g (ratio of 2 carbs/proteins). All mighty soy beans, 35g to 21g (ratio of 0.6 carbs/proteins), still contains a lot of carbs. These plants are great to get fiber and protein sources, balancing animal based protein sources. But I don´t see how you can get a well balanced or low fat/low carb plant-based diet without taking protein supplements. If you know how, I'm all ears.

Yes, according to the study the vegan group reached a mps just as great as the one eating animal protein, but didn't they have to consume 40g while the omnivore group only had to consume 20-25g? Correct me if Im wrong. But if so, that means you'll need to consume WAY more plant protein just to reach the same level of mps as with animal protein. And furthermore, rice & pea protein usually contain insane amounts of heavy metalls while soy has high amounts of phytoestrogen, which are classified as an endocrine disruptor and may cause thyroid problems.

Some things I’d like to point out, phytoestrogen is not as dangerous as it is often made out to be. Actually, there are no health concerns if you’re consuming normal amounts of it (which is more than 2 blocks of Tofu every day If I remember correctly). Multiple studies also showed that on the whole soy is very healthy. The heavy metals really are a shame but not all powders fall under this category there are tested ones. If one is concerned about heavy metals however one should look at fish. It not only contains loads of heavy metals but also a lot of micro plastics which accumulate over the food chain. Lastly, I want to point out that meat and other animal protein sources don’t come without health issues. High blood pressure, strokes and even diabetes are associated with animal foods. The reason probably being it’s high unsaturated fat, cholesterol but also the iron and the protein itself. Heme iron, the type found in animal products, for example is associated with colon cancer. I’m by no means an expert in this field but if you want to know about science based nutrition purely looking at studies and examining their methods and outcomes do take a look at nutritionfacts.org. It has a lot of great info and is a nonprofit as well. Have a good day :)

@@richard8815 I personally take another stand in the debate around meat causing health issues. From my digging around studies + personal experience (I grew up a vegetarian/vegan & ate a whole foods plant based diet for 17 years) I believe it can be a rather important part of a healthy diet as long as it's grassfed, organic and overall high quality (I'm def not saying that a vegan diet is unhealthy). However, I do agree with you on the part about fish, which I don't think should be consumed in high amounts today or from low quality/unsafe sources. You might be right about phytoestrogen. My thoughts about it primarily changed when I got my second case of extreme hormonal imbalance. I had very high levels of estrogen compared to my testosterone at a younger age which gave me so called manboobs that I later on had to remove through surgery. At these times I ate lots of soy-based products and other phytoestrogenic rich foods. Maybe some people are more sensitive to estrogenic compounds than others, or maybe I'm completely wrong. I just know that my hormones got back to normal soon after I stopped eating the high amounts of soy and other sources rich in phytoestrogen. I always love hearing other peoples views on nutrition. It gives it a bigger picture, and people are often very close minded around this subject today. I just think it's important to draw your own conclusions around this subject since there are a lot of things that impacts our health. For example, unhealthy people rarely restrict themselves from any food, including meat. If they go on a plant based diet (or another diet), cut processed foods & sugar & loose wheight they are most likely gonna get healthy no matter what. But where they really unhealthy because of their consumption of meat, or was it rather because of all the processed foods, high amounts of sugar & large calorie surplus? In the end however, when we get a more clear view over the science of nutrition, you might be the right one! Thanks for your comment, and I hope you have a great day too! :)

@@JD-wf2hu Here is a great video of Layne Norton talking about a relevant study towards plant proteins effectiveness (down below). He also links the study in the video description, which I also read. @@demarcjohnson Why would u look back into the past at all? Humans ate what they could get because they had to for survival. Surviving and being/eating healthy until you're 100 years old is a huge difference. Every big health organization states that u should eat at least 30g of fiber every day, which is not a lot and still most western countries aren't able to get that in.

The problem I have with this is that yes you can get a similar balance (not the same but somewhat close) in amino acids but to get a similar amount to say 350g of steak you need to eat over double the amount of plant material
@absidyabsidy2727

This is only relevant if you have a disastrous diet - whether you’re plant based or not, if you have a properly and intelligently constructed diet with a variety of whole foods, you will reach your essential amino acid targets ridiculously easily.

Makes perfect sense in theory, but in practice it's a lot more of a hassle. To reach my required amount of protein intake, i should full on put down a strategic list of what to combine, whereas if i am to take my protein from say chicken i wouldn't have to worry and have the side that i like, not the one i am forced to in order to complete a AA jigsaw puzzle. And this when it already is hard enough to get all the protein i need in a day. As always, one should stick to a diet they can stick to. Plus, as you say, the data is not enough to draw serious conclusions. A viable option? Sure. THE answer? Nope, sorry.
@macht4turbo
@macht4turbo 2 жыл бұрын
Might be the way i prepare my food, but i don't need to think about which protein sources to combine, it just happens naturally. I don't eat just legumes in a meal, i eat rice, potato or pasta with that and et voila, i have combined the protein sources. Add to that the protein from the vegetables and your golden.

Your body knows what it thrives on. A little self-experimentation will tell you what you need to know. I was vegetarian or vegan for decades before switching to a meat-based diet at 63. 1.6g/kg is insane. Hard to do vegan without protein powder. Most of the plant stuff is around 12-14g per 350kcal. So eating 400g of it puts you at maybe 50g for 1500kcal. 1.6g would be twice that. You'd have to eat 800g of wheat, quinoa, buckwheat, beans etc. etc. to get to that amount. Lentils are like the only good source with 22-24g per 350kcal. You'd have to eat 300g of lentils everyday at least to get that amount of protein.

The whole protein craze is stupid anyway. Much less needing to eat meat. You can get plenty of protein eating plants without even trying. Just eat mostly whole food plant based and you’ll get all the protein AND the FIBER, which is what people lack, not protein.

Well, the title dosen't really match for this video. You did a nice and fair comparison of plant and animal proteins but you didin't make it sound like plant proteins have some sort of significant advantage like it will pump far lower CO2 into the atmosphere or methianine (an amino acid found mostly in animal sources) shortning your life span as one study claims. But since i'm not a vegan it dosen't personally bother me much but still i like accuracy.

@@snailevangelist you do realize that some japanese scientists turned some fish into female with soy compunds, right? Soy is the biggest isoflavone (a fitoestrogen) in the human diet. Yes, we all need estrogen, but our body already regulates that part through natural processes, exogen estrogen eventually will have it's impact on your body, it already has in the male population, halving it's average testosterone levels in the last decades through microplastics, and compounds in every food such as soy lecitin and corn syrup. But go ahead and consume all the soy you want, fine by me.
