Diet breaks are a popular nutrition strategy where, during a weight loss diet, you intentionally take a break from your usual calorie deficit. The belief is that diet breaks can aid in multiple ways like improving certain hormone levels, metabolism, and even accelerate weight loss.
There's also potential psychological benefits, which might aid in achieving your weight goals and even maintaining your weight loss after losing it. All of this sounds good, but how do they stack up to the actual science? Are we looking at a potentially awesome dietary strategy or is just another form of bro science? Let's find out!
Any information in these videos should not be taken as personal healthcare advice. If you have questions about your health, please speak directly to your personal healthcare professional. #diet #weight loss #gains

I take a diet break once a week. On that day I’ll eat to maintenance calories and it it feels so good and earned. I’m on a 3 month cut and everything feels so manageable with a one day break weekly. I’m not sure about the science but I’m on target to hit my goal after 8 weeks and it’s apparently working. Consistency and tracking everything is working for me 🎉

@@arrrahawk Currently 180 lbs down from 200 lbs. 6 ft, sedentary for most of the day. Lifting the same weights pre diet. About 500 calorie deficit daily. Knowing that I can’t gain muscle in a deficit so just hoping to keep what I’ve worked hard for. Being at 180 lbs I see definition and a lot of vascularity. Veins popping everywhere which I didn’t notice at 200 lbs. Still overweight and hoping to hit 175 lbs. Using Myfitnesspal to track and it’s pretty decent. Used Carbon app for a month and it’s not worth the money. But allowing myself to eat to maintenance once a week keeps me disciplined for the other 6 days

The psychological science is basically just the break resetting your willpower for , in your case, another 6 days. If you were to have absolutely no breaks, you'd go each day thinking "ugh, this sucks". But in your case its more like "this sucks... just for a few more days"

Thanks for the video. Very informational. I do intermittent fasting and that has worked for me over the years. I agree that diet breaks are most helpful to curb your cravings. However, another method which is fasting can work wonders. Not everyone can do it, I know. But if you can fast for 24 hrs, that is going to change your body. Your metabolic system getting a break for 24 hrs where they have to do nothing is a huge plus. Infact, it can focus on rejuvenation and healing which is not possible when it is constantly working on processing food.

Do yourselves a favor and build your metabolisms prior to dieting. Engage in quality hard training, eat a bit of a surplus with focus on getting 30g or more protein each meal, don’t become cardio obsessed which can actually slow your metabolism, get enough sleep. Get noticeably stronger in the gym prior to cutting back calories. Last thing anyone should want is to have to diet on such a low calorie amount you feel like absolute crap and require a diet break. Unless you are trying to get contest lean, a diet break or desire to have “cheat meals” should not occur. Hanging out at a new maintenance calorie level until comfortable moving lower makes sense, but If you feel the need to cheat, you likely need to reevaluate your approach. I like the slower steady approach to achieving a new body fat level if that wasn’t already apparent. The rush to the finish line is what makes the end result unsustainable for the vast majority if you ask me.

I lost 25lbs earlier this year and Diet breaks seem like they helped. I took a diet break after about 10 weeks when my weight loss stalled after losing 11 lbs and after I did the Diet break (one week at maintenance calories and reduced cardio) I ended up losing 10lbs in the next 5 weeks. Not saying that would happen to everyone, but it certainly made a noticeable difference for me personally.

Diet breaks are the most effective when you've hit a stall. You don't really need to take one unless this happens. Hitting a stall is physical evidence that your metabolism slowed down, or some other issue. You don't really have to prescribe them to yourself unless cutting isn't working... But the psychological benefits can be worth it if you really hate cutting.

Diet breaks are, in my anecdotal experience only good for physiological reasons. I've found people need to go ff them for so long to get their metabolism back up the whopping 100 calories or so they may have adjusted down there really isn't much point. On the other hand, if I have someone on a 750/day deficit and they are not losing weight for a few weeks, or worse, gaining weight for a couple and I have already addressed sodium intake, caffeine etc., then they are obviously under reporting calories that are being consumed or the amount of calories they are burning is being drastically over-estimated. This happens a lot with weight loss aps that tell people they burned 700 calories lifting weights for 90 minutes at the gym...except they were only lifting weights or loading bars/machines for 25 minutes, the rest of the time they were resting between sets. So they were actually only working out for 25 minutes. Not 90. As much as I encourage walking between _normal_ non-failure and/or non-squat or deadlift sets, people don't always do that, and if they need a break to catch their breath and get some strength back before the next set, well then they are better off sitting down as opposed to walking. Even moving between sets is most likely not going to get the calories burned up to whatever crazy number the ap spits out, so I encourage people to cut the number their ap spits out in half *if* they tried to move around between sets. If they just rested for 2-3 minutes between every set then cut it by 66%. Is it perfect? Nope. It's far clsoer to accurate though, at least in my experience. That said, the above tl;dr of: If the weight loss stalls the person may want to consider a *short* break (3-7 days). If they start gaining weight then the same thing, along with a stern talking to about making sure they remember to log 5 servings of ketchup (or wtv) when they dump it all over their burger and the potato they sliced up and air fried. Not logging the little things can make a *HUGE* difference. I had a *small* bowl of frosted mini-wheats as a _woke up in the middle of the night starving and there was no fresh pineapple or watermelon"_ snack. I weighed real quick, added 1/4 cup of milk, ate it, went back to sleep, logged it the next morning and the bloody frosted mini-wheats had more calories than 2.5 servings of Ice Cream. I was like _"You've got to be kidding me. This is why I avoid cereal like the plague when trying to lose weight."_ Even if I had Cheerios instead, I still would have been getting 2 servings of chocolate chip cookie dough worth or calories with less bloody protein. So yep, use them if you need to, but if you are still doing well on your weight loss/weight gain plan, then there is rarely a reason to screw with it. Since they take about 3 weeks to add 100 calories to your total metabolism over the course of a day, I'm not a big fan unless the person is really having a hard time. Better off just saying _"Instead of a 750 calorie deficit let's try 250. Eat _*_WHATEVER_*_ foods you want, just make sure you are at 250 calories or more for a deficit and get 150 grams of Protein per day."_ I find this usually gives women about 1750 (with a 750 deficit) to work with and gives men about 2200. I encourage 3-7 miles of walking per day along with 3 60-90 minutes resistance training sessions or 6 30 minute ones, the latter usually being calisthenics. Calisthenics also tend to burn more calories in my experience as the people are moving pretty much the entire time. The _Beginner (Yeah right)_ *Insanity* workouts from the early 2K's are brutal, and effective as heck. Good grief. When I get to the point where *I* am stuck at the gym...Lifts are stagnant, maybe even going down a bit in weigh or reps. I'm having a tough time staying motivated restricting calories and working out, I just switch. I have the workouts on my computer which I got from...sailing the high seas (Hey, I don't even own a DVD player anymore nor do I have any idea where the DVD's might be hidden in a box somewhere in my basement)...Anyway, I'll take a couple of weeks to a month off of the gym and just do those bloody Insanity workouts 5-7 days a week and oh my goodness. The weight starts to fall off again while I'm able to eat a few hundred calories more *AND* I'm spending less time driving to the gym while doing shorter workouts. Then I get back to the gym, 5-10lbs lighter and my lifts always seem to be back to normal. Those workouts are hard though. No _Jane Fonda_ stuff there. Lol, I believe Shaun T. was supposed to be a Coach on The Biggest Loser but his workouts were just too difficult for the contestants. Even Jillian Michaels was like _"Shaun, this is just too much. I can't do this workout."_ She's a puss though. And a hypocrite. She loves screaming at other people but is the first to stop when she's a little winded. Big jerk, calling people name's and all that nonsense. Fyi, if you are going to throw-up, well it happens, but this isn't Freshman Football Double Sessions. It's OK to take a ten minute break after your cardio makes you vomit. Squats or deadlifts? You'll be fine after 5, but don't start exercising again until your stomach settles. It's just a huge endorphin rush similar to the effect opioids and cocaine produce.

It seems obvious diet breaks cannot accelerate weight loss by themselves, but it also seems obvious that diet breaks can make dieting much psychologically easier and might even facilitate deeper calorie deficits during the diet phase, which can in fact accelerate weight loss. But of course, we have no legitimate means of scientifically measuring psychological easiness or difficulty.

Not bad in terms of strength. Clean diet isn't really contributing much since I'm so damn lean. (About 15% - 17% body fat, currently.) My job is at a UPS warehouse where it's not uncommon for me to lift 100+lbs multiple times daily. I have to get those calories in. Even one day of under eating, sets me back pretty bad. It's more of a low energy feeling that hits me.

Mike Israetel goes on quite a bit about scheduled maintenance phases for fat loss if you lift weights. If you're a bodybuilder whether professional or amateur and your goal is to lose fat while preserving as much muscle as possible you absolutely MUST take maintenance phases (calculated diet breaks). I'd strongly recommend anyone look this up as it's beyond the scope of a KZfaq comment to explain it. Mike Israetel has a PhD in exercise science and sport physiology and with all due respect, knows far more about this subject than this channel.

Dieting can cause hormonal problems. A diet break helps obviously every damage imposed by overdieting or dieting the wrong way. I’m not convinced of studies that compare diet breaks to a perfectly managed diet, as this was what those studies compared them to, right?

As someone who’s been obese for over 15 years, I have tried probably three dozen times to lose weight and going on a crappy diet but it sucked and I would give up. Now seven months into my weight loss journey I lost 152 pounds and I attribute it to my healthy lifestyle. And I know exercise is a big part, but I can’t exercise like a regular person trying to lose weight. I have rheumatoid arthritis, so I physically cannot do it. The key is to acknowledge that you have a food addiction and then to acclimate your body to a proper diet in the way to do it is to cut out all the processed sugars and salt. that’s it you can have pasta and bacon and sausage which is what I love but you have to switch it out for non-processed and 100% clean organic I’m meal prepped pesto and red sauce pasta for a meal prep every day and it was absolutely delicious and I didn’t go insane. I used organic chickpea pasta, and for the sauce I used raos. For the pesto, it was just walnuts, arugula and basil, organic olive oil, and pecorino Romano from Costco. Remember, it Hass to be organic and not processed at all and if you want a sweetener, use raw honey or maple syrup instead of table salt use pink salt or Celtic sea salt because if you fuck up then your body won’t properly acclimate.
