We’re continuing our tour of the best wines of Italy, and of the world really, as we’ve been through all Italian whites, the bubblies, Tuscany, Central Italy, etc. and today I want to tell you more about what I call the Piedmont Red Trilogy, three types of red grapes grown in the prestigious Piedmont or Piemonte how the Italians would say, one of the very best areas for winemaking in Italy famous in particular for its illustrious Barolo and Barbaresco appellations for the reds, but also for its Asti Muscats for the whites, BUT, Piedmont is also reputable among wine connoisseurs, for making these 3 very interesting and distinct styles of red wines, out of three different grapes, that make very complementary styles with each other.
There’s the rounder, more opulent style of red called Dolcetto, there’s the more acidic, freshly fruity, lighter and very vibrant, sometimes a little grippy Barbera, and the all mighty and famous Nebbiolo that makes some of the most desirable wines in the world which has it all, complexity, body, acidity and so on. So let’s have a look at why you should really investigate those, and enjoy these three complementary styles from this same region in Northern Italy. This is, Piedmont’s delicious red wine trilogy. Let’s go…

Thank you for you videos: they are very useful (expecially for an italian wine lover who wants to know more about french wines)! Just 3 corrections: 1) In Piemonte thera are no IGT, all appellations are DOCG or DOC. 2) The name Dolcetto is not related to any charachteristic of the wine itself. Someone says that is related to the sweetness of the grapes because birds like those grapes (they ripen before Barbera and Nebbiolo); but the most reliable hypotesis is that the name Dolcetto cames from "Dusset": in the local slang it means "low hill"). This is important because the status of "ugly duck" came in part from the fact that people outside of Piemonte thought that Dolcetto was a kind of sweet wine! 3) Barbera superiore d' Asti Nizza is a separeted DOCG from 2014 (2016) and it's called Nizza docg; this is no just bureaucracy! It's important because for the first time the grape Barbera is related to a territory without the need of specify the name of the grape; like Nebbiolo for Barolo and Barbaresco, Sangiovese for Brunello di Montalcino and Vosne Romanee for Pinot Noir (ok, these examples are exagerrated but the concept should be clear!)
