Pier And Surf Fishing Gear: My Favorite Rods, Reels, & Braid

Hey Skipper

Hey Skipper

Күн бұрын

I use different gear for pier fishing and surf fishing. Between fishing reels, fishing rods and braided line there are an infinite amount of combinations you can choose from. What you chose to pair with each other can make a worlds difference when it comes to performance. You can pair together rods and reels to create a great outfit specialized to best suit your fishing grounds.
A pier is different from the beach. Using longer rods on the beach allow you to cast further. But may be unnecessary long for a pier. A rod that is too long at the pier can yield you problems with casting and having a harder time landing fish. My surf fishing rod is usually 10’-11’ where as my pier fishing rod is 8’-9’. BOTH of them have a longer butt end. This allows for better leverage.
Anyways, just watch the video and I will explain the rest!

Great video. I have always fished for largemouth bass, but I recently bought my first saltwater reel for surf fishing. Now I have to buy a rod and head to the coast, which is an hour from my house. This video was helpful. Keep em coming! Thanks.

Man you nailed it with surf fishing in Florida. So many different species to catch its part of the fun with fishing. I live in NJ now and it’s just not the same. Pretty much just stripers and blues.

Was going through some of your videos, You do a great job BTW, and stumbled across the "why use a conventional fishing reel vs spinning reel. I see you have discovered the Penn international baitcaster series. I have caught everything from fluke, bluefish, stripers, Mahi Mahi, and even a Brown shark and a small thresher shark about 4ish ft long and 100lbs each with ease on my 975. This reel is just a beast when paired with the right pole. Hard to imagine there is only 12 lbs of drag on it, because it keeps up with my Avets any day that have around 28 lbs of drag. Just figured I'd give a shoutout to another fellow International user. Oh, and a word of advice about that reel, you have to watch the freespool button getting stuck. Without proper maintenance it gets jammed and parts are hard to come by.

If you are using lures, just get a MH or H 8’6 or 9’ salmon rod. Okuma Celilo is pretty good. Just pare it up with Penn Battle or Spinfisher if you have the budget

I live in Germany and from all the Brands we got over here, i also only use shimano. You definitely get what you have paid for. The lower price reels are good too! Would always prefer a 50$ shimano on a 150$ quantum or DAM reel! Daiwa also make great gear. Penn is great for saltwater!

My Pier fishing set up is a Daiwa Regal 5000BRI reel with Andi Tournament grade line, 20lb test. The pole is from Cabelas, the Tourney Trail IM8. A 10 foot long two piece rod with a medium heavy action, and a max lure/lead weight of 2oz. As for Penn reels, as long as you get the old ones that where made int he US of A, yes they are great reels. The newer ones not so much. As far as braid goes, I'm 56 so I've been fishing along time. I find braid to need a bit more weight too cast it as far as mono line. Where as with Mono line I can use less weight and cast it as far. Now for boat use, yes Braid would be great. But that's just my two cents worth. Tight lines and have fun.

I have a 10ft MH. surf rod paired with a Shimano Twin Power 6000 spinner. My wife will be using a 9ft. MH surf rod with a Penn Battle 6000. Both reels have 30lb test and 30lb flouro leaders. Am I geared right? I'll be at the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier. Thanks for any intel you can provide in advance!!

Sir, thanks for the great video! Very helpful. Do you prefer a 2- piece or 1-piece rod? Or is there not really much difference. I use a 1-piece rod with freshwater fishing and sometimes it comes apart. Of course, it might be due to user (me) error. I am going to follow your recommendations and geta Mojo and Shimano Saragossa. THANK YOU.

A trick that I learned in a tackle shop when using 2 piece rods is to slide the top half down then turn the rod around 90 degrees. It’s gonna lock it in place and keep you from casting the top half on. Just make sure you account for the turn when you first place the top half on the rod so that after the turn your guides all line up perfectly 👍

I prefer to catch more fish over one big fish to. It makes fishing much more fun. Especially if you have kids with you and or someone who you're teaching how to fish with you. I often see guys at Huntington Beach who will sit around for hours waiting to catch 1 Thresher Shark. Meanwhile, everyone else is catching Mackerel back to back. I usually have two rods set up to catch something big like a Bat Ray on a Kast King Bait-Runner and one or two other rods to catch smaller fish.
