Pierce Brosnan tells Peter Travers about the cruel business of Hollywood and working the famous franchise. Also, he and "The Ghost Writer" co-star Ewan McGregor engage in a little bit of song.

I can tell in Pierce's voice here when he talks about being James Bond you can tell he misses being apart of the 007 franchise. TBH I honestly don't think that the 007 franchise would still be alive if it wasn't for Pierce, his work as The Legendary 007 was the absolute best and he's my favorite Bond of all time I grew up with his Bond films and games.

That was a sad and sorry trend that I honestly never liked. It seemed just about every superhero, from Batman to bond had to have this ultra serious gritty realism makeover. Every action movie seem to want to be the Bourne identity. And what you got was over a decade of nothing but very serious not very fun series of action films. I still have not seen any of the Daniel Craig films, and while I did enjoy Batman begins, I was not a fan of the very serious tone. I'm hoping that we will eventually go back to the way the movies used to be fun and exciting escapism.

@leavemealoneyoutube17079 жыл бұрын
Will Brock As long Fleming's Bond is played, the original Bond never dies. Casino Royale was the first novel, this was something really personal to Cubby's children, so they wanted to do the film right. Skyfall was the "original" Bond in everyway. He is a veteran at this point, Q's exploding pen remark showed he had his share of wacky gadgets, the DB5 is clearly not the same one from Casino Royale, just look at the driver's seat. It had the Goldfinger gadgets too. So yes, the Original Bond hasn't died. The movies themselves did not have much continuity. Casino Royale wasn't the first reboot in a Bond series, they rebooted with each new actor but the essence of 007 is there. The books had continuity, the movies just keep it limited that way the films stand on their own. I think Craig lives up to the past Bond's but brings something unique to the role that we get the origins of Bond and beyond.

Eon probably thought that hiring a newcomer would be wise. and they came up with Daniel Craig then again it would been cool to see Brosnan in a gritty direction, instead of all that futuristic crap

Unfortunately, Brosnan got shafted right from the very start. Goldeneye only had a high amount of sophistication to it because they were banking on Dalton returning. Brosnan did well in the movie and is gripping in dramatic moments. But, for his next Bond movie he's given a hackneyed media empire satire with scenery chewing from Jonathan Pryce. From then on, he never could convince as serious because the silly tone had been set. Everything or Nothing is my favourite Bond thing in ANY medium- a fantastically fun and polished game! What a shame that it was too late as Die Another Day had already been made.
@winnieclark16544 жыл бұрын
@@Picnicl yes, and the script for TND was a disaster, changed on a daily basis. Then they do him in by casting Denise Richards in TWINE, which he was trying to turn into a lower key, darker Bond. Finally we had the overblown mess that was DAD. Can you imagine Craig being saddled with the script and casting issues that Brosnan had? Maybe Cubby liked Brosnan more than his kids did, and once Cubby passed they were already looking to move on. It really did seem like the producers were trying to undermine his movies. The decisions they made were truly head scratching.

Brosnan had a difficult tenure in that the bar was set so impossibly high with Goldeneye, his first outing, which was arguably a perfect Bond movie. The rest couldn’t hold a candle. And unfortunately his last time in that character was Die Another Day, a truly abysmal script. However, had he continued, the trend set by The Bourne Identity was gritty spy thrillers rather than campy fun that Bond had been known for. It’s why Casino Royale was so serious. Sure, he was good-looking... maybe to the extent of my understanding some 'pretty boy' type of slur... but "effeminate" is ridiculous. The... I don't know... mincing... it implies is way off as an accurate description of Brosnan's Bond. Personally I've enjoyed all the different Bonds though I have to say that the two who are described as the most 'masculine' (Connery and Craig) while brilliant as action film heroes are the least true to the essence of Fleming's character. A bit too common. Or, as Andrea K's wonderful Bond description has it (and nails it), not uncommon enough.
@Averagebum2110 жыл бұрын
blackmore4 From Dictionary.com: Effeminate: (Ajd) 1.(of a man or boy) having traits, tastes, habits, etc., traditionally considered feminine, as softness or delicacy. 2. characterized by excessive softness, delicacy, self-indulgence, etc.: effeminate luxury. That's exactly what I meant. He's the opposite of macho, as James Bond or Remington Steele. I felt he had by far the best acting skills though, and could portray emotions, the gravity of a situation, and suaveness in the minutest of facial expressions, like none of the other Bonds. It is these acting skills that I felt made up for his lack of macho-ness. But I wouldn't argue about the precision of his acting to Fleming's Bond character, as the last time I read snippets of Bond was more than 20 years ago, and I can't remember them very well.

Everything or Nothing (video game made into a film) should have been Pierce's swansong. He deserved a great send off for saving and modernising the Bond franchise, they did him hard. Here you can see it hurts him not to be part of it anymore.

Well, to me Brosnan will always be Remington Steele. And he actually WAS Remington Steele while playing Bond.
@scottknode8984 жыл бұрын
Actually Remington Steele ended in 1987 when The Living Daylights was released and Brosnan was originally cast as Bond but couldn’t get out of contract in 1986 because of Remington Steele. Dalton was cast and took over from Roger Moore when he retired. Brosnan didn’t become Bond until 1994 after Dalton resigned to play Bond again for Goldeneye

Listening to Pierce "i wear it with Pride and it was the greatest time of my life being a part of that franchise" - and contrast that with that abysmal Daniel Craig "i'd rather slash my wrists than do another one". Tell me again, why we should be thinking that the brick-with-eyes that can't emote and is utterly charm and charisma-free as Bond is the best and we kinda look down on Pierce in the role. For me, Pierce was/is the best cinematic Bond. The best mix of Connery, Moore, Dalton and with a little bit of Lazenby's vulnerability. Dalton was the Bond of the books on screen but Pierce is PERFECT in the cinematic role.

Yeah, I like Craig as an actor, but after Casino Royale the movies became monotonously grim, and I've gotten tired of hearing Craig whine about playing the role. Can't imagine him doing a Casino Royale watchalong for fans in 25 years.
@SFNDMK Жыл бұрын
A lot of the bind actors felt the same. Connery was bored and hated, Lazenby couldn't stand the press. And Dalton was bemused by how he was treated as some super hero

It is almost inconceivable that Pierce Brosnan would not consider attending the Academy Awards tribute to the James Bond film series, as suggested by the news media. Brosnan fought tooth and nail to get the role, the financial success of his four films from 1995 to 2002 revived the series and enabled Brosnan to get financing for other projects such as The Thomas Crown Affair and The Tailor Of Panama. My money is on Brosnan being in attendance.
@scorejames8 жыл бұрын
Being "Booted" is a bad headline. Brosnan had a great run as 007 and the Broccolis stuck with him during the Remington Steele tie-up. They always treated him well. While Moore holds the record with 7, Brosnan had a longer and better run than Dalton, who didn't get a 3rd because of a legal issue between Eon and United Artists that lasted 4 years. Dalton could have been Bond in OHMSS (1968) but declined.

Couldn't agree more. Brosnan was sexy, cool, sophisticated and did the action scenes fine. He was also great to look at. Craig makes the Bond series, just more in the action flick genre. Short, pugish, no humour, I don't get Craig and miss Pierce in the role.

@isometric85 Remember, Daniel craig plays bond in the beginning of his career (prequel of all bond movies)... so maybe bond was meant to be like that and it shows how much bond has learned over the years and learned to become more charismatic, etc. Just like u and me, If we became agents, we wouldnt have every angle down 100% but if we survived long enough, we would learn the tricks of the trade better and improve our own self.... well same thing with bond!

This is the best Bond after Roger Moore retired. And to me even with poor scripts and character development he carried the movie. They seem to not know which way they wanted to go with the spying. Go big, or more incognito, and underground and gritty. Then they could have sprung different styles of James Bond. Are they could have said that James Bond is a code name for all agents, that would have opened the door for anybody being Bond.

Man i remember being a kid and going on upcominghorrormovies.com but they give you news on all upcoming movies not just horror and I was a huge bond fan it was 2005 so it had been years since the last bond film and on the site I see the list of names and there was "007 casino royale" I was already so hyped just seeing the name so I click and they have a poster and plot and cast information for it but no Brosnan I was so disappointed I didn't even give the movie a chance. Of course I got older and watched it and really appreciated the movie for what it was it was good but still missed the fun I had watching the bond movies. I ended up still enjoying the Craig movies except for qos but I find myself going back to the classic bond films more often then I do with Craig's.

When Daniel Craig's Bond portrayal first appeared, I admittedly applauded both the serious and different approach of both his and his first film. It was like the return of the Dalton style for us original fans of his that have lamented his loss when he was cut short by the legal issues that caused one of the great tragedies in film. And I had it figured that "Casino Royale" would be treated with real care and attention to eliminate wholly that embarrassing ridiculousness that was the '67 spoof film. But the problems that I have had with the Craig era since is that they never changed the style and they never have evolved his character; he has always been roguish and brutish and, yes, melancholic, like he was in "Royale". Furthermore, the films themselves are not as enjoyable upon repeated viewings which should not ever be said with Bond films; I watch it, say I like it, and then am not be interested in watching it again. They do not possess the same heart or essence as the earlier films. I do not think that the productions have to return to their styles of thirty or forty years ago, but I think that something more can be done than to make them look like the Bourne or Impossible films and continue what I think has been an ill-conceived storyline arc idea.

they did Pierce dirty honestly. And I felt they never let him really flex his chops as Bond and put his own unique stamp on the role as his films for the most part played it very safe. Although to this day a lot of people still talk about him as their favorite Bond. They should have given him one more back-to-basics Bond film and then bow out.
