I'm not sure if people are aware of just how difficult it is to time a pipe organ to an orchestra (or any other instrument) in the same building. Pipe organs are incredible, breathing instruments that take time to generate sound, and even more time for the sound to propagate throughout the building. I'm am truly blow away at the sheer level of skill on display by Mr Roth - an artiste to be sure, and an incredible instrument. As a lifelong student and player of pipe organ I am awestruck by this collaboration. Bravo!

I am addicted to the sound of Cavaillé-Coll's incredible instruments. I got to experience this instrument myself for a few glorious minutes during an organ tour many years ago, and Monsieur Roth was a most gracious host. I got to experience the sounds that Widor and Dupré knew, and I discovered how ergonomic this console is for people less than 6 feet tall. At a hair under 6 feet, I felt cramped. Unforgettable experience! The instrument is indeed breathtaking in person.

When the organ speaks, people can just listen and the orchestra has to bow for the power of the organ.

It's endearing to watch Roth count out the big chords...Lip reading, he counting in French un deux trois, quarte, cinq...I must be tough getting the timing right in such a big building, even with the video monitor

To young people listening. No amplifiers, no speakers, no electronics, no computers, no digital manipulation, just pure, powerful sound made by real musicians on real instruments. The organ shakes the building to its core by blowing wind into pipes that stand 32 feet tall. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord!

Unbelievable! I wonder if Saint Saens ever played that organ. On another note: something equally fantastic. There's a video of Johnathan Scott's transcription of the complete symphony for solo organ. The versions are like 2 big steam locomotives on parallel tracks, both awesome and powerful. From Chicago, U.S.A.

What a terrific performance and recording. I’m an organist, and to get a recording that shows the organist’s perspective in a large church and acoustic such as St Sulpice is pure genius. I’m living the experience with Mr Roth on every single note - just superb. Thank you for posting this video.

The organ at St. Sulpice must be one of the most powerful sounding musical instruments on Earth. There are a number of recorded organ performances from there on the net and even the crappy mp4 format permits some degree of this huge sound to come across.

Thank you Pierre-Francois for this amazing upload. You have put a lot of attention to detail in your postings. This masterpiece by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll is the perfect instrument for this piece. I got to the point of disliking it after so many years but hearing it like this made it new and exciting for me. There's just something spine-tingling about a 32 foot bombarde. Assisting Daniel Roth at the console must have been a great experience. I presume you play as well? It would be a dream if someone like Inspired Acoustics sampled this organ. It's one way that the organ could be kept forever come Hell or high water, or a fire.

Pierre-François, one curiosity if I can... did you use an ANALOGUE camera and monitor for Daniel Roth to see the conductor? I am asking you this because digital video systems tend to have a very noticeable latency time (propagation delay) due to all the encoding, decoding, processing etc... so when the director waves his hands, his picture on the monitor follows after some tenths of a second... of course, that would be unacceptable for your purposes. So did you have to find an old analogue camera and monitor in order to have zero delay? ;0) Thank you!

I had the great pleasure of attending M. Roth's 30th anniversary recital at St. Sulpice in October 2015. It was thrilling to hear the first mvt. of Widor's 5th Symphony on the instrument it was written for. There were also duets with his assistant Mme Choplin, including a two organ piece with her playing the choir organ. The final long chord of that piece was the most glorious sound I have ever experienced from an organ!
