This beauty is actually called a "Pierrière" in French.
It's some kind of "trebuchet", and the closest name I found in english was "Pierrier". But the Pierrière have to be throw into motion by manpower, instead of a counterweight, like on the trebuchet will do later in middle ages !
(Also known as "Mangonel" =D )
The evolution of this siege engine went from the manpowered "Pierrier" to the "Bricole" wich added a bit of a fixed counterweight, then the final form of the Trebbuchet appeared with all the effeectivness of its ingineering that we know =D
What you see there is a part of the activities and show we propose in Beaucaire's Castle ;)
But we can as well build the same machine for your hown castle !

Thank you, this is the only video I have seen on KZfaq that doesn’t erroneously depict mangonel using torsion.

A traction trebuchet! Examples of these were known in China as early as the late Warring States period, and there are descriptions of 30-man trebuchet teams. If 4 guys could launch a stone that far, 30 guys must have been pretty scary.

@@spades9681 I'm not saying that they should've used stone I'm just saying that stone wasn't used for that , it could also be dangerous for them as stone could fragment and fly all over the place

This is known as a "traction trebuchet" in the American hurling community. Traction meaning "pulling". The video is very nicely done and entertaining, and the people in it are certainly enjoying the activity.

A good depiction of one of the most common trebuchets In mire staggering sieges larger ones with up to 30 men pulling could come about with counterweight trebuchets cominv about a bit later

@Carancerth
@Carancerth 4 жыл бұрын

it looks like a compact, quick shooting device, makes it suitable for open field battles, no? All you need is one engineer as supervisor and some strong peasants :)

Very interesting! One question It looks like it can be easily dismantled and reassembled where required How long do you estimate it would take for a team of trained men to reassemble this machine in the field? Which is the easier process? Assembly or dismantling?
@Carancerth
@Carancerth 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don't have any clear idea about how much time... especially if the aim is to be fast... Just to assemble everything... It took several hours If I do remember correctly ! Perhaps with a trained team, dismantle, moove, then assemble ... could take perhaps a day? an afternoon, depending on the place , and the distances? That it a question worth experimenting, I guess =p

You are most welcome! So, as a cheer distance we dont know, we should experiment on a clear field and take dozens of mesurements . But you can see it reache the upper borders of the castle wall, which is pretty high! And perhaps at....50m perhaps 70... Cant remember =$ but yeah I should have consider taking some mesurements ^^"

same way other trebuchets do it, i expect. one end of the sling is fastened to the arm and the other is hooked onto an angled pin on the arm. it just slips right off at the apex of the swing and lets the projectile go.

If I do rememeber right : Regarding the weight 2KG of something neaaar For the distance,.. hummm the tower we were shooting at was about.... peraps 50m Meaning that it could go over 50m perhaps beetween 30 to 80 m depending on many things, but we haven't tested enought to tell for sure for what I know ^^"

Est-il possible qu'ils permettent de jeter des pierres sur un vrai château au risque de l'endommager ? En Italie, il y aurait de gros troubles criminels. Pourtant, intéressant. Pour nous, cette machine s'appelle mangano, pas trebucco.
