Pig Birthing what do you have to do? It is not always a easy thing helping a farrowing pig give birth. If you want your piglets to survive then you have to be present for it. When a pig is birthing you can not be squeamish stick some petroleum jelly on your arm and go elbow deep. Especially when you know you will have a lot of piglets that are coming from the sow or gilt. When the pig, sow, or gilt is birthing you will have to do what is needed to make sure your litter will have its best chance at surviving. Take care and may God Bless you and your family and we will see you next time.

My family has a couple of Berkshire sows, and this is going to be my first time delivering piglets. I'm kinda nervous so I'm doing my research, but I've delivered goat kids. I'm fifteen and I am the "animal midwife" on my farm lol😂. I'm so excited for piglets thanks for the video👍 keep it up!!

Sometimes they need some help especially if she has a lot of piglets to deliver. Sometimes the piglets are a bit large or stuck. Better chance of survival for all involved. I would also note that if you don’t have a pen designed for low mobility of movement to not to attempt to assist with her delivery.

I raise hogs for a "natural" pork company so we can't use farrowing crates. I have an old farrowing house from around the 1930's-40s with 6x6' pens, bedded, no slats. When i initially started raising them I was farrowing in the winter with no furnace, only heat lamps. You had to go out every 90 minutes around the clock to check if there was a new litter. If there was, you would get behind the sow, and every time she had one I would pinch off the umbilical, hand dry/clean it off, and put it right under the heat lamp. After it fully dried, I would transfer it to the udder. Very effective, but I'm glad I have a furnace now! :)

So in this farrowing box car it get real humid in it and actually will get some condensation built up and we will have to kick on the fan to release it out.

A few questions, and I don't know anything about farrowing, 1. Was the sow in distress otherwise why assist? Why do your sow not clean her young? We did have pigs when I was a kid and they were certainly not contained like this and managed their own young? Good video and not meaning to be critical only wondering. Thank you.
@ChurchsFamilyFarmCFF
@ChurchsFamilyFarmCFF 4 жыл бұрын
Brenda Freestone the reason he contains the sow is to insurer The best possible survival rate for the piglets this I was not because of distress. The reason to assist was because it was such a large litter. We were just assist the sow when needed she had a total of 17 piglets in her.
@ChurchsFamilyFarmCFF
@ChurchsFamilyFarmCFF 4 жыл бұрын
Brenda Freestone the crate is also called a farrowing crate is intentionally designed for the purpose of farrowing pigs so that the mother sow will not lay on one of the piglets by accident the mother sow does have access to her piglets but only has a limited room to lay down to help insure the safety of the piglets.

@@ChurchsFamilyFarmCFF No problem. I love to see responsible handling of animals. We Humans are meant to be stewards of this world and it gladdens my heart to see people being responsible. @@ChurchsFamilyFarmCFF My pleasure. Part of why we love him is because he studied the minks' natural habits and traits and based the training off of their instincts. He even managed to get them to work with dogs and is in the process of training an Argus Monitor Lizard to do the same. Using what the good Lord provided to achieve goals which line up with what nature already provided is awe inspiring and more folks need to do the same. Bless you and your family. Goodnight.
