Great video. You have an impressive group of pigeons and your loft(s) are very well designed. I had not heard of using the pink dye under the wings to deter the hawks. My father and I always put Vaseline on our birds feet before a race. Seeing you do that brought back some great memories for me. Good luck racing.

Hi there, great video my dear. I am Hameed from Cape Town South Africa, my dad raced pigeons since the early 1950s, he passed away in 2014 sadly, What oil is that, that u put on your birds feet and why? I have started with the pigeons now. We have mostly pure Arjan Beens bloodline, bout 10 pairs of Jan Aarden and 6 pairs of Jef Van Wanroy Pigeons, my dad was king of the extreme long distance races, Wealth of experience he had. My brother is like him almost, im learning still from him. Good Luck with your races, ur birds look good.

Hello Hahmeed, Thank you for your compliments and sharing your story. We live it very much to get comments of people all around the world. This time Cape Town where you live. We live in a city called Urk, near Amsterdam in Holland. You can say you grew up with pigeons! Great to hear that your father had pigeons for long distance races! Sad to hear that your father passed away in 1950. Good that you started with racing pigeons now. Very good that your brother is helping you with your family knowledge about pigeons! Hope you have very successful races! We use MCT oil (enriched coconut oil) and put it on the pigeons' feet before going in the race baskets as a protection against dirt (poop) in the travel baskets for pigeon racing. We don't want the feet of our pigeons become dirty and therefore more heavy in flight. The must have their feet clean. Because of the oil the dirt glides off. Also oil give protection against lice from other pigeons in baskets. Please make sure you use enriched coconut oil and not regular. Regular coconut oil will dry and become stiff on the pigeons' feet. That is not good. Best to search for "MCT Oil" on the internet if you decide to use it. Hope to have helped you in this way. Please let us know if you have any further questions. I have 3 pairs of youngsters bred out earlier this year, Jef Van Wanroy strain, but they have 13 primary fl8ght feathers instead of the normal 10, do u think in your professional opinion that this will be advantageous to them when they fly in the races?

Hi Jannie, it’s great to watch your loft clips🥰 We will try “MCT coconut oil” on the pigeons’ feet to prevent from the lice at overnight basket grouping. About your question: We put coconut oil on the pigeons feet. It is called "MCT Oil". Any sort of coconut oil will do. You can search for any coconut oil you want on the internet. We use coconut oil as a protection against dirt (poop) in the travel baskets for pigeon racing. We don't want the feet of our pigeons become dirty and therefore more heavy in flight. The must have their feet clean. Because of the oil the dirt glides off. Also oil give protection against lice from other pigeons in baskets. Feel free to ask any other questions you have. Wir waschen die Beine nicht mit Wasser, sondern geben MTC-Öl (angereichertes Kokosnussöl) darauf, um zu verhindern, dass Schmutz aus den Körben der Taubenflüge auf den Beinen verbleibt. Wenn Sie dies verwenden, stellen Sie sicher, dass es sich um angereichertes Kokosnussöl und nicht um normales Kokosnussöl handelt. Grüße, Jannie Brands.

Hello Joe, Thank you for your question: We use the pink dye to confuse hawks, so they don't recognize the pigeon as pigeon. In order that they don't attack. We use paint that is also commonly used for marking pigs, cattle and sheep. It is called animal marking spray (it is sold in spray cans). We don't spray it out of the can on the animals, but we use a brush and poor a little bit of the content of the can in a little cup and then brush little stripes under the wings of our pigeons and on the tail. We don't do it anywhere else. Not on the feet. Greetings, Jannie Brands
