So, winds that day really did played a big factors for your returns. Since wind is coming from the north, it forces the young birds to the south (which some ended up on some islands like lanai and maui) . While the old birds on the other hand since those birds has stronger vitality already and they are already familiar with the place they had their work arounds which led them to your loft. As you can see on the first OB with the GPS on it she flew on the northern part of the channel before it reaches the island the reason behind is so that since the wind is coming from the north she will let the wind take her to the south part of Oahu (not sure of the spelling tho) to your loft. This is very educational! Unbelievable! Amazing! Thanks for your vlogs man! Here in the Philippines we also race the same as you guys. We race race from island to another island. Some of my birds ancestors came from Hawaii as well and they are doing very well here in the Philippines! Hope to see more of your vlogs. Good luck!

I flew in Hawaii for 30 years with the Hawaii State Racing Pigeon Organization. I had been last many times and like you lost many pigeons . To fly well in Hawaii you need knowledge and the person who makes mistakes takes himself out of the game. In 1981 I won 11 out of 22 combine trophies. In 1971, I like you lost 56 out of my 69 birds I sent to Molokai. But I went on to win the State Open with only 2 birds home on the day from Hilo winning by 15 minutes. You do not mention the training and feeding before Molokai. You are making pets out of your racers, these are athletes and they are very sensitive in many ways. You will eventually figure out how not to get these losses but it will take time. From what I see in your video your birds got overheated and could not properly navigate home. New flyers like you are conditioned to medicate for everything. Medication is important but you have to know when to use what to obtain optimum results from each pigeon. Feeding is an art in itself and will require many years of study. Above all you must have FUN doing pigeons in Hawaii because it is a very difficult course for pigeons. I enjoy watching your videos because all that you are doing I did when I was a young and became a fanatic pigeon man. But i had my wonderful years and I hope you continue so you can eventually get better results. I eventually went to California and pigeon racing became very professional. I have had several wonderful pigeons in my life. So in closing I would suggest you read the 1982 American Racing Pigeon Year book where I wrote an article. It will help you very much, i guarantee it.

Thanks, for your update. Wished it was better news. It’s good to know we have much Aloha from our neighbor island residents who was so caring to contacting you and birds got rescued. Well, at least it wasn’t a white wash. With 4 YB’s found there way home. 2 YB’s rescued from Molokai and Maui. It was good that one YB returned was one with GPS ring and you can try to figure out there paths. Why one YB flew to Lani and back to Molokai. And another to Maui. Seems they got confused while circulating broke up in smaller groups some flew more easterly and roundabout tour of Lani and Maui. With this ... emphasis should be looked at there ability to oriented at that time, haze blocking site of Oahu, higher winds would hinder there way home. Thunder storms on the sun effects earths magnetic fields. Releasing from the most Western part of Molokai would have been a better choice. Better site for birds. Please, we all done it before. But a good lesson to learn don’t rush anything thru for it will only back fire on you. So, now I’m retired from Work .....have open calendar now ....just call if you need help.

Thank you for you comments. Unfortunately, racing and training young birds is a balancing act between finding the time for breeding, molting, vaccinating, and training so there is always going to be a risk involved or you would end up sending birds to a race that are not ready. Unfortunately the weather and external factors such as the rough ocean preventing ocean tosses and hazy conditions are out of your control but training must be accomplished at some point. I will show the training they went through in an up coming video which at times was very interesting and informative. The day of this release I had concerns about the wind but not how it would affect their ability to fly high and see Oahu and I also did not really think anything of the haze that day because I believed the bird relied mostly on magnetic fields for orientation but now I know better. I also was anticipating the birds heading in the correct direction initially and being at a higher altitude upon reaching the west shore of Molokai with maybe a sort of mental momentum that would result in them continuing in that direction. Because, even though I released the birds on the west coast of Molokai last year, I was able to watch them fly north south for a long time perpendicular to the path back to Oahu. But this year the birds did not head in the right direction so what I was anticipating would happen did not, but then again how could the birds have know that I had taken them east or west of Oahu. I can see you believe smell has a influence on their navigation and I have heard the same but I think in this situation the ocean cancels out any hope of them using smell and also our trade winds are at their back so it's not as if they can smell Oahu and fly in that direction. I'm telling you, our birds in Hawaii have some of the most difficult geography to navigate. I'm thinking the birds would have done a lot better had the visibility been perfect, I know that now. I really think sight plays the biggest role for our birds the first time they are taken to Molokai.

Great news Sean! Since the birds flew back and forth over the channel they were healthy and in shape, the only thing they didn't have was experience. Wind and visibility must have played a decisive role in this, also the jump for the release point was kinda high. Told you not to lose your faith, I'm glad you got some of your birds back! Keep on flying! 🍻

Hey Sean, Is it too late to start training new birds now for your young bird season? I have probably around 6-8 I could send you that are 25-30 days old. Let me know and I can send these your way this week. I might have a friend that could have more if its not too late. Oh and my birds are doing great! We do not fly young bird so our season starts in February. I should have 40 birds to fly this year for my first season.

That first training flight across the water has got to be tough for you and for the ybs.. I find your gps data on the YB you got back most intriguing. I so wish I had a tool like that when I flew birds. If I had good returns on my yb training season, we'd always end up have a terrible smash race along the way during the season. It's amazing where these birds go when they get lost. I once had a yb come into my loft, a few years ago, that had been lost during a race, they hit a storm. It has been lost the week before from over 1,200 miles away. It's owner was some shocked when I called him and told him what bird I had.

Wow. The GPS tracking is so cool and helpful. From the data your birds' problem was not crossing water (brave birds); so that was not the issue. I believe you are correct with your analysis of what may have caused it because even the experienced birds had difficulty at first.

I agree 100%. I didn't realize how the visibility would hinder their ability so much. I figured they would also be using their magnetic navigation to orientate themselves but after this release it became clear to me that even if they can use the magnetic field, they still have know way of knowing where I have taken them in relation to their loft. I'm kind of thinking they may use their magnetic navigation to backup the routes they are accustom to or that they have learned. Thanks again! Aloha, Sean

Very interesting comments from all. I feel that a true solid answer is not in sight. I believe that most of the reasons has a contributing factor in it and it snow balled. Now, do you have enough YB's to enter. I think you should enter them. The magic is there. They have the desire to make that crossing by themselves. It only will get better .... You'll see it in the future.

How were the returns for your other club members? If they did ok, then it is something you are doing or not doing. As I’ve said elsewhere, incremental training tosses, over and over for months prior to the first race, may be the key. Train them out to the first race point again and again, but work them out there in increments in order to get them familiar with the landmarks. Slow but very regular tosses, starting when they’ve been exercising from your loft for several weeks. Me: Up early with barely any light. Crate the birds. Clean the loft, change the water and put their breakfast down. No breakfast until they return. Drive up the road and watch the sun coming up. Pick the release point and just sit for a bit. Release....and many will beat me home. First ones home get the pick of the seeds (peas) and the late ones lose. Motivation. Evening exercise and, again, last ones in the loft get leftovers. Once they know they have to step on it to compete for food, you won’t see them landing anywhere but the landing board, and then rushing in to secure their meal and perch spot. Tosses: two at 5 miles at first, then a couple of 10s, then 20s, then 50s, then 75s, then 100s (as many as you can do), then 150s. All that cross channel transporting must be a pain and expensive, but I would be willing to bet that heavy training will get them so familiar with the landmarks, that they will think nothing of a race......just an overpopulated training toss. I wish I could chat with you about the birds and flying. I do miss it. And I envy your lofts. They’re beautiful. My loft was in the 5 foot space between my garage and the boundary block wall. It was 20 feet deep and the opening faced north. Not exactly an ideal situation 🤣. I did pretty well nonetheless. In one race the birds were blown west in hot weather. I got the first 7 (minus the 3rd) in the club. The older guys loved that I’d beaten the one old guy who thought he was the dog’s bollocks because he had been racing pigeons from birth.😀 He was in the US Army Pigeon Corp. in WWII.

Sean.. According to the gps and how the Molakai island looks like,, i am now thinking maybe because of the Headwind due to the higher mountains that made them go backwards instead and also a hard vision to track their way back home due to those mountain peaks. And yes i agree with you, the Lanai ( not sure if i spelled it right ) island is the most clear view they had to go through, by the time the birds were started to get exhausted and needed to rest or maybe get something to ease their thirst or something else... Evaporation ( steamy thing ) can also affect the birds' body a little bit heavy or dry... The 2 old birds, no wonder were experienced enough to track their way back... anyways... lets hope more birds will come back... but still.. tough fanciers will at the end gets a tough results.

I'm happy for you some birds returned, Sean. If I counted correct, so far you have 5 young birds. Are you getting the bird that was found on Maui back? Well, I hope you do. I think in time more of your birds will return. Especially since the first race is less than a few weeks away, a lot of the flyers on Oahu must be Molokai training. Hopefully, your birds might eye the flock and follow back to Oahu. Maybe you should check out what the retired flyer has to say. Your videos are great. ALOHA

Hey awesome vid, following you a while now... I would suggest if you have the time or if there's a boat that travels between the islands. Train the ybs, 1/4 water off the island at least 3 times. then go half water, and then 3/4 before hitting the main land of the other island. as some pigeon hate crossing water, but once you get a family of birds that will cross thats it. Sorry for the lost of so many birds I does grind if I loose 1. so I ensure and properly prepare them so worst case if they get lost. its at there own merit as I equipped them as best as possible.... Side note if that was a race your old bird would of cost you the race. as he circled a while. could be he was following the pack.

Thank for sharing the wonderful videos... I also had a similar experience my 1st year training ybs 50 mi where I only got 1 day bird. I believe with everyone training around the same time and with the birds being inexperienced and by nature like to fly in flocks, there's a possibility that they got together with another flock ending up going the wrong direction. I truly believe this is what happened in my case because one time I ended up at the same spot where a club was doing a training release. My small yb team for sure would have followed their birds. I altered my training sched after knowing what time the club release their training toss, since then it has not happened again. Do you know if there are flyers in the area where the two birds with GPS ended up taking their breaks? Maybe one solution to solve yb losses is for all flyers to schedule their road tosses but that's going to be impossible. Goodluck hope you get more back so you can compete this year. After three yrs I'm done due to my city ordinance. For a flyer with a small team I was going to transition to OBs. I felt the ybs lost thru process of preparing for the yb race would have had a better chance. Anyways just a beginners opinion.
@alohapigeons9440
@alohapigeons9440 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I'm starting to seriously consider taking a brake from yb racing and do ob racing. I think this is better for the birds. As for where those two birds landed, there is really not much there and it was a big surprise to see them land there. Even though this was sad I would not have learned all that I have without this happening and I hope it makes me a better flyer both for myself and the birds. Thank you very much for your input! Hi Shaun, have you tried doing single tosses? I think it strengthens the bird’s ability to think on their own and become a leader, not just a follower. After several single tosses, I don’t have any more missing birds and I noticed faster return. Sorry for your loss but it’s just part of the sport. Thank you for sharing the good and the bad. Aloha! @adybuaron8383

Looks like this would resolve that wild theory about magnetic field that homer pigeons used to navigate, because that surely was not the case here. Both birds with gps band showed they're going to the highest point to get a better view of place they're in then decides where to go from there. Going to Lanai and even Maui was I think a trial and error effort from them to return. Looks like you'll have fewer bird entry for the upcoming race, but at least they've had that experience now. Maybe on the race they would have more chances of returning since they'll be flying with huge flock of birds trying to go back to oahu... Crossing water I think plays a huge part of killing the birds confidence to cross. Goodluck to the upcoming race Sean, and appreciate all the updates! Keep us posted please.

Man, you hit the nail on the head with your analysis. I agree with you in every way. I still think there might be something to the birds using the magnetic field but I equate this situation to a person being dropped in a foreign location with a compass, that person might know which way north, south, east, west is but they still don't know where they are and which way is home.

well regardless of how many birds you have left to compete for the race, what matters is you've gained a lot of experience (good and bad) raising quality pigeons, and not just for the sake of winning a race. That I think will make you more a successful breeder maybe not now, but you'll sure be on the top in no time. keep enjoying what you do and keeping your passion, and of course keep uploading excellent videos and good tips to new enthusiasts😁. I learn the hard way also I’m not rushing any more lost 12 birds going too fast too quickly. You have a advantage on me you have no hawks , I will let all the birds on open loft for a long time you need them to fly around voluntarily for at list one to three hours they need to survive in the harsh elements they need to think like wild birds. Good lock

Progress. That young birds gps data has proven to be valuable. From what i see, your logic seems sound on the points you mentioned. It looks like to me that she was actively trying to find her way back home. So on the magnetic field aspect. Pigeons and other animals that use the magnetic field as part of navigating, its the lay lines that they sense the strongest. Usually the magnetic field stays stable but gradually changes along the path of travel dictated by the geography. And as long as there is little to no siesmic activity, the magnetic field will stay consistant and will become more familiar to the bird as it repeatedly travels that route over time. But that changes when major siesmic activity is occuring in that area. To the point where it screws with thier ability to navigate. Similar to when a plane flies into the Bermuda triangle and their navigation instruments go haywire. I think this is the biggest reason for the meandering that we see according to the gps data. And it didnt mess with the gps bands because it wasnt quite strong enough to do so. And animals are a lot more sensitive than technology is. Add poor visibility, high winds, and inexperienced birds, simmer for 20 minutes, and you get these results. Sorry... That was an attempt to cheer you up... Lol? So my opinion is that Murphys law was working overtime. And that woman is very kind to send your bird back.

I felt so bad when I saw her flight path because she was trying very hard to find her way. That's what really kills me. I have been thinking about the birds using the magnetic field and there is one thing that keeps bothering me about this philosophy. I'm going to use the example of the birds ability to detect the earths magnetic field equating to a person having a compass in their hand. I know if I had a compass in my hand and I were to be put in a crate and I were to go through the same thing the birds do when being transported off island in a car and on a plane turning in every direction getting disorientated and then open the crate and let me go, I would look at my compass and be able to see the direction of north, south, east, west but I would have no idea which way to go because I don't know where I am. I think only once the birds have started to develop a path from what they can see that they can then start to back up that known path with whatever magnetic abilities they may have. I hope I have explained that as clearly as I think I did.

This is an interesting article about the weakening of the earth's magnetic field. If it's true then that could be a reason everyone is saying we are loosing more birds then we use to. www.livescience.com/46694-magnetic-field-weakens.html

What’s similar to the course that you fly Is same as course they fly in the Philippines where it’s land water land race....as they say horse for different courses and I could only think that you may want to try bloodlines that does well with this kind of courses. Most proven bloodlines in the Philippines that does well with inter island races were stichelbauts, bekaerts, van den broukes, HVR’s, imbrechts, bricoux. Van den broucke May be difficult to find in mainland US but the rest are available....if you know Ed tangonan in Kaneohe he has devriendts that May do the job as well

I guess it's still a wishful idea. Hawaii fliers needs an option to ocean train there birds. Logistics cost participation would this option be viable. I think it's worthy. You'll only gain success if you try. And I believe lost counts will be less. Birds would be put to a test. Doing equal distance tosses between Oahu and Molokai. They would be able to sense ocean around them, weather conditions, clear site to Oahu, but most importantly there forced to fly. No landings close by. To this I feel they would benefit from this training.
@alohapigeons9440
@alohapigeons9440 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. But to be honest, the club is going the opposite direction. They are making the race schedule more difficult not easier. Young birds only have two Maui races before going to the Big Island, we use to have three. Old birds don't even have a Maui race anymore, straight to the Big Island now. Between trying to find a calm day on the ocean and getting everyone together to split the cost of chartering a boat it was just too difficult.
@hana-houswif-ters9433
@hana-houswif-ters9433 6 жыл бұрын
AlohaPigeons yea, I hear ya. It's to bad if clubs/committee don't consider the well beings of YB's/OB's and try to ease the schedule. I would think that there would be more races coming out of Maui maybe 4. Give the YB's/OB's a chance to be successful. Instead of 2 for YB's. A Big 0 for OB's. I think it's a tough and risky schedule to do. More bird losses that's for sure. Unless, fliers have superman birds and don't consider loses. What can we do .....

You put a lot of work into the birds, they should have given you better results. Your looking at two issues: one you jumped them to much to far and they got scared or two the birds are not as good. I’ve been watching your videos you have the same problems from last year poor return on the birds. Birds fly in rain fog snow winds all that. Remember you cannot turn a donkey into a race horse regardless how hard you try. Good luck

my advice to you is to watch your own video with great observation and you will see your solution right in front of you. So many errors. Let me say this. I once went to countermark for a Hilo race, Johb C HAD 28 pigeons of which had gone MAUI TRAINING 25 TIMES. The next day he did not get in on race time. IT WAS HIS LAST RACE. I sent 7 and won 1st & 7th. Forget about all that you have posted about your ideas and turn left and go a different direction.
