I found you through one of the pigeon groups I'm in! I just adopted my first pigeon yesterday. She came into the wildlife center i volunteer at badly neglected, and clearly imprinted. We bonded quickly and became best friends. I hadn't seen her in a week and a half but she was still so excited to see me. We've already had several good couch naps and she's been learning how to fly and enjoying all the room to stretch her wings! Keep making videos! There aren't enough videos for pet pigeon owners out there!!

That bird she's holding looks like a bird I once had named Sandy, we called him Sandy the Chicken ! Reason being Sandy thought he was a chicken, he felt more comfortable with my chickens, than with my pigeons and the chickens didn't mind Sandy hanging with them.

Dear Crazy Pigeon Lady -- Thank you so much for this entire series of wonderfully helpful pigeon-related videos! We were "adopted" by our pigeon a dozen years ago. We were out for a walk on a lovely spring day and she followed us home on foot part of the way and then rode on my head until we returned home. Her name is Piggly and she's been the house bird ever since then and in her cage she gets along perfectly well with our dogs and cats. She learned how to "bark" from our Great Pyrenees, so any delivery person or friend coming to our door is immediately "announced". She is extremely affectionate and on nice days she likes to go out with us when we're gardening -- half the time she flies about our yard on her own and the rest of the time she parks herself on our shoulders or heads and supervises our work. When we're done, she goes right back into the house with us. She's a wonderful bird, is very intelligent and has plenty of personality. She's a people person and doesn't like other pigeons at all which we have always found surprising. Guess who rules the roost at our place? Thanks again for your terrific talks, CPL!

That pigeon is absolutely beautiful! Great video, new sub here from Norway. In my childhood we had pigeon named Thor, loved him so much, very loving, not hard to take care of in my opinion compared to other pets I have had. My husband have very bad allergies so I can’t have one, my house if full of aquariums instead, but I support pigeon rescues financially. And I care for the wild pigeons in my garden, especially in winter. Absolutely love them...

Back in Iraq we used to breed hundreds of pigeons in our garden, where we even grew dates and figs (all normal things to do in the Middle-East) Usually we either sold or ate them, but whenever i did a good deed or got some time off studies, i got one to take care of personally all on my own until it died. I miss those days.

Thank you for all your information. I have a rescue pigeon, that was reported as flying in a local alley with threaded feet. Shehe was always alone ;not part of the local flocks. After over a week of trying I managed to net her. She has x 2 coloured rubber rings in each leg - no numbers. I have fed her up, given vitamins and gotten rid of the awful Feather Mites. She's put on 3.5 ounces! I very, very carefully and slowly removed the threads and bathed the feet several times in diluted HIBISCRUB So, now she's lovely and talks to me and flies around the soare room. We are a rescue group and are trying so hard to find an aviary fir her/him. There's some plucking of leg down, as if making a nest.... day times cage is on balcony for fresh air fir a few hours, at night they're back in the cage. How can I keep it happy until we find a safe home for it? No one has claimed the bird, despite posting on FB. Any ideas please? We're near Brighton, in Sussex.

Thank you for this video ! we once found a dove that crash-landed in our garden and stayed with us for 2 weeks before going on it's merry way. The bird choose a high chair as his prefered perch in the kitchen so my mom put newspaper there to poop-proof it. Surprisingly, he never pooped anywhere else than outside or on the newspaper. A very polite bird. He got well fat, started flying again after 1 week and by the next week he went further and further, until he never came back. We think he was domesticated but lost, since he looked very used to being handled. That's the 2nd bird who used our house as a hostel (first one was a pigeon from germany who got lost after a flying competition. We found the owner thanks to its ring) and Ive been wanting pigeons ever since !

Hi, if hes not eating independently I recommend you seek the advice of a rehabber to help you with weaning tips and help him gain weight. For future reference, cat saliva is toxic to birds and can be fatal if the bird does not get antibiotics, if you find another bird thats been had by a cat please get them to a rescue as they may not be so lucky!

@The Crazy Pigeon Lady First off, lovely video! Super informative, and Ana is so cute! I've been wanting some sort of pet bird for a few years now, initially I was very into the idea of a budgie or some other sort of parrot, but after doing a lot of research I decided they weren't right for me. I've always loved pigeons, I live in a big city so I see them all of the time. About a year ago my family decided to move, where we're moving there is a lot of room for chickens or some sort of aviary. I have 2 dogs that are pretty small but they would not do well with a pigeon or any small animal, but because they're small I can easily keep them separated. I go to school during the day so I was considering getting two pigeons and building them a secure aviary outside, and then when I get home I can bring then inside. One of the big reasons I've fallen in love with pet pigeons is because of how affectionate they are, would a pair be less affectionate to me? Or would it be smarter to get one pigeon first, (that would be indoors because I'm home all day currently) and then get the second one when we move? Also what pigeon breed would you say is the most affectionate, but would also be alright outside for some of the day and at night? Thanks so much for reading this super long passage :) (by the way there is a pigeon rescue pretty close by to me, so that's not an issue)
@thecrazypigeonlady8731
@thecrazypigeonlady8731 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Pigeons are quite individual so there are no guarantees but getting a single bird first and building a relationship may increase your chances of affection from your birds, rather than getting a pair already bonded to eachother. Most pigeons should be able to cope with outdoor accommodation as long as the aviary/loft has an indoor section with shelter and possibly heaters if cold. If the birds you get have only every lived indoors they will need to be acclimatised gradually! As to friendliness, there are no guarantees a bird will be super cuddly but you can increase your chances if your bird is young, a hen and of a breed known for their easygoing nature like Lahores, Kings, Fantails and Owl-type breeds. Lots of patience and time can win over many pigeons but some will always be a little standoffish but still lovable. Good luck!

Pigeons are awesome. I am involved in pigeon rescue. I still have the first couple of pigeons I rescued (around 14 years ago) - a wood pigeon and a feral. The only thing I would say is that if you have a pet pigeon, and you end up rescuing another (say you find one on the ground), then do NOT mix the birds. If a bird is on the ground then its ill and needs to be quarantined and treated. Wash your hands between attending to the birds, and preferably wear/change gloves.

My brother had to throw the pigeon for my dog to retrieve. My dog was particularly soft mouthed with pigeon though so he(we named him Kevin) lived through all the training(being the conscious bearing humans we are, we took good enough care of him for him to survive the 2 weeks of training) I have been doing research all day of how to rehab a pigeon since he still had a few small cuts and feathers missing I am planning on bathing him for the first time tomorrow If anyone has tips on bathing, feeding, care, etc. , please reply to this comment, Kevin would really appreciate it

Do you think a pigeon is easier or harder to keep than an indoor cat? Or is that like comparing apples and oranges? Asking mainly because I really want to have a companion once I move out, but I know I will probably be living in an apartment and won't have the time for a dog.
@thecrazypigeonlady8731

In some ways pigeons can be kinda like cats in their behaviour, sometimes they want cuddles, sometimes not. Some are lap birds, some are not. They like dark boxes and snuggle spaces and tame birds like to sit on stuff you touch a lot! Some even like to play with toys. Probably they key difference is that you cant let a pigeon come and go out the house/apartment as easily as a cat, and their poop and dust is more work to manage but it can be managed. Hope that helps!

Looking for advice, and as always it’s much more difficult to find pigeon help online. I rescued a male homing pigeon (DNA tested) about a year ago named Dooby, he’s indoor only in a very large cage and comes out once a day with his pigeon pants. Another rescue pigeon came to me, and I figured Dooby could use a friend. He is also a male, but I did my best research and it sounded like they can get together well, but they may have to develop a dominance hierarchy once introduced. I kept the new pigeon (Chili) quarantined for 2 weeks, then kept him in a small cage next to Dooby’s for another 2 weeks. I first let them meet outside of the cage with pants on, they talked some but didn’t seem to mind each other much. Since they’ve been in the same cage, Dooby has been instigating fights. He’s territorial about 2 specific spots in the cage, and when Chili goes near there he starts his “dominance coo”, puffs up struts around, occasionally pecks Chili’s butt. At first Chili was scared, he would move to a different spot. We have been trying to split up the fighting as much as possible, but from what I’ve read they will eventually “sort it out”. I am starting to see Chili now getting fed up with Dooby’s constant instigating and he has talked/pecked back, but Chili does seem interested in just being close/hanging out with Dooby. So my question is, do I not intervene and let them figure it out? Or do I separate them again? Will they be able to live together ever or would it be dangerous to keep them together? I’ve tried taking out/moving small things around that Dooby is especially attached to, but not sure what else to do. If any fellow pigeon people have any input please let me know! Thank you Jem for all of your content, you helped me tremendously when I first acquired my rescue!!

2 males are much less likely to pair well than 2 hens, especially if they are competing for territory in a small space and one is a new bird. They may eventually calm down and get on, or you may have to give them their own cages so they can each have a space of their own.

Is there a video where you go into more detail about food birds as pets? If I wanted to rescue a pigeon, I would probably end up with one of those breeds. As someone who grew up with parents who bred parrots, I'm simply amazed at the concept of a bird that can't decide to rip your thumb open on a whim.

I dont cover specific breeds in my series but some Utility breeds like Kings can make good pets. Really large ones like Runts or Modenas might be more suited to outdoor living in a chicken coop type environment. Modenas are grumpy birds and not friendly, but Im not sure about the nature of some of the others like Cauchois, Mondain, Maltese etc. Hope that helps!

Best to get him checked out by a vet, experienced rehabber or pigeon-friendly rescue as injured wings may require pinning or amputation in extreme cases and he may need pain relief. Once he has recovered, if he remains flighted then he could go to a rescue with release aviaries but if he cannot be released then he needs a safe home. Care will be much the same as healthy pigeons but he may need additional considerations in his caging setup if he is a disabled bird that cannot fly, such as ramps between perches.

That very much depends on wildlife law where you live. In the UK its not legal to take a wild bird except under licensed conditions for rehab/rescue with the intent to release. However, it is not legal under animal welfare law to release an animal not capable of survival in the wild either. So, most woodies ending up as pets are unreleasable/disabled birds.

I've ben researching pigeons for a few weeks now and my biggest concern at the moment is once I'm able to work back in office that it''ll be harmful to the pigeon. I work full time 9-5, 5 days a week in a studio environment. I'm certain I can work something out with my job to do part-time at studio and at home when the time eventually comes, but I'd like to know how well a pigeon would handle that amount of time away from me to better plan around it. Do you have any resources I can reference?

Pigeons are social birds so its important that they do have contact, especially if a lone bird. My own lone bird coped well with a few hours on her own but got lots of attention before and after work, and we had a strong bond. Every bird is an individual; some may not like it. You could give it a try, but you must be prepared if necessary to do whats good for your bird and get them.some company. As to resources, there arent any helpful books but theres a Facebook group Pigeons as Pets - The Perfect Pet with lots of pigeon/dove owners on there who may share their thoughts. Good Luck!

Ive had a lone pigeon myself who was on her own a few hours a day. I had a close bond with her and she was fine. They key is plenty of attention and cage free time for as many hours as you can when youre around. You can provide some enrichment activity to keep a bird occupied during the day. Lone birds are a big commitment and if it doesnt work out you need to be prepared to do whats best for the bird if needed, like getting them a friend. Good luck!

Hi! Many of the less exotic fancy pigeon breeds make good pets, but many pigeon owners have success with ex racers, and rescued or disabled birds too. If you have a mated pair, you can swap out eggs for fake eggs soon after they are laid but it is something you have to be diligent about doing. You could also get a same sex pair, a pair of females may pair and lay eggs but they would not be fertile. Keeping pigeons does come with a fair amount of cleaning but 1 or two birds is usually manageable. I hope that helps :-)

Difficult to say! There might be more birds of prey near your city, or perhaps less people feeding them, or more pest control by the local authorities - it could be many things. Pigeons remember people who feed them so if you feed them regularly in the same place they might become friendlier with time :-)

It would depend on the breed as to their temperament but certainly King pigeons which are bred for meat in the USA do make nice pets. With patience and time you can build a positive relationship with most pigeons but a nervous adult bird would definitely be more work. I would be very cautious about buying pigeons from a wet market as you cannot be sure of their health condition and whether they are harbouring any diseases resulting from the cramped conditions. You could be taking on a bird that would become sick and require treatment.

A pigeon should never be taken from the wild, and it might be illegal in your country to do so. Wild species (ie any species other than Columba Livia) dont always adapt well to pet life and wild birds that have been treated by a licenced rescue/rehabber that are unreleasable are better kept in an aviary. There are lots of pigeons in rescues needing loving homes. If you share your home with others I would recommend discussing potential pets with them as any conflict over keeping your pets could result in them needing to be rehomed and that would be sad for everyone.

Domesticated pigeons are naturally predisposed to humans so theyre easier to tame than parrots or other hookbills.
