Pike season is well underway and in this video I run down the main gear that I use to target pike on the fly. Starting with rods, I personally fish 8wts as that's what I have but a 9wt or 10wt is seen as more the standard and will help when throwing really big flies for pike.
In terms of reels, nothing particularly special is required, a large arbor will help with line memory and a reasonable drag might come in handy. Lines are more important as lines designed for casting bigger flies will make your life easier. Floating lines will work just fine on shallower rivers or canals but intermediate and sinking lines will be better for deeper water.
On the end of my line I attach a shorter leader made up of 2ft of 40lb fluorocarbon and 1 and 1/2 feet of single strand Nickel Titanium trace wire when using a sinking line to make sure the fly gets down deep. When fishing shallower water I will extend the fluoro up to around 6ft.
For flies, a lot of it comes down to personal preference and confidence. When starting having flies in dark, natural and bright colours in a couple of different sizes will cover most of the bases.
I always use a line tray for managing my line, on the bank or in a boat. It saves a lot of headaches and lets you concentrate on fishing rather than keeping your fly line from getting tangled.
One of the most important things to think about is handling pike and getting them unhooked as quickly and easily as possible. A big landing net with rubberised, knotless mesh is ideal and you'll need a decent pair of long nose pliers and side cutters for removing hooks. A quality landing mat will protect the pike from hard surfaces or losing their protective slime.
Lastly, it is always a good idea to wear some form of eye protection when fly fishing, polarised sunglasses have the added benefit of helping you to see into the water to look for following fish or even the take!
I hope this was useful, it's not a comprehensive list of everything you could possibly need for fly fishing for pike but it covers most of the important pieces of equipment. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments and I will reply as soon as I can, cheers and tight lines!
