Pike pushups can be a really useful assistance exercise to help develop the strength necessary for the handstand pushup.
However, the issue is that when most people perform this movement, they are not doing it in a way to correlate the movement pattern to the HSPU.
There are just a few details in terms of form and execution that should help make the progression more clear, so you can sooner realize the "final form" of the move.

Hey Yuri! Great tutorial, thank you for this! One question; i work my shoulders quite a lot, I am pretty strong at them (on Saturdays I do, for example, a shoulder day; 4x wall hspu - 10 sets, 15x hs shrugs - 10 sets, 8x pike - 10 sets, 10x pseudo planche pushup - 5 sets, and some resistance bands supersets to kill of the arms). But I am still struggling with the free standing hspu. Do you think it's more of a "form"/balance issue, or am I just not strong enough?
@yurimar
@yurimar 4 жыл бұрын
don't know, it's hard to say without actually seeing what you're doing it. freestanding HSPU requires balance, skill, and strength. Just being strong enough is not sufficient. Also, even when working on the pure strength, you still have to think about the technique. The way most people do wall HSPU does not mimic the movement pattern of the freestanding version

Hello Yuri, i am almost a week practicing on this exercise, i feel all the stress in my forearms, but not in my shoulders, when i started i couldn't complete one rep, today i reached 4. Wonder am i executing the exercise right. I'm so keen keeping all time my elbow over my hand palm.

Could you please explain why do we push into a leaned position and then open the shoulders instead of pushing into opened shoulders(resting position)? I think that the same technique can be applied using a weight plate(the big one) where we push to a position slightly in front of us, and then open the shoulders aka lean into it. Correct?

How do I combine the balance and the strength needed on my training? I mean, I practice 10 - 15 min of handstands before my BW workout, and as a strength exercise I do wall HeSPU (Will try this now). But how do I practice the real thing? sets - reps? practice time like handstands?
@yurimar
@yurimar 4 жыл бұрын
Can't give you an answer here because it depends on so many factors, especially the proficiency of your actual handstand. This would be best answered through an online coaching session because then I can give you precise answers based on your individual situation. The topic is going to be covered in my next book as well

Aloha Yuri. I do both these on rings and handstand push ups against the wall - facing the wall - switching every other workout on push day. Should I just do one or the other? Really want to get to a free standing handstand push up this year. Over 50 by the way in case that helps. Thanks.

it's hard to say without working with you in person. too many potential variiables I generally place any work in handstand as a higher priority for HSPU. this is more of an assistance exercise as to your question, it really depends on your execution

613 Hey Yuri ! Pike push ups can be done even with retraction or with protraction,but which one do you recommend? I watched the video , you were using protraction if I noticed it right ,but you didn't mention it was a mistake to go with retraction,so what's the difference? And about 6:13 I have always seen on videos that when you go back up you go directly in the pike position instead of in the lean pike position ,is there also any difference between this 2 positions ? Greatful for this video !
@yurimar
@yurimar 3 жыл бұрын
protraction is preferred and will have more carryover to freestanding HSPU

@yurimar
@yurimar 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not really sure what you’re trying to ask me with that question. You’re going to have to be a lot more specific and clear with your language. What if I think it’s what you’re asking, I’m pretty sure I answer that in the video. There are a lot of ways to do something, my way is not the best way, I just have a particular method and style that I like to use to teach these movements. If somebody does it differently than me, that’s absolutely fine,

So planche shoulders past hands a little first then bend the arms elbows in terms of the pike push up?
@yurimar
@yurimar 4 жыл бұрын
yes, for learning the movement anyway. When you get better the shoulder lean and elbow bend will happen at the same time, but I find the separation is better in the beginning for clarity. Main idea is just to keep the feet as light as possible

Seems to me that you breath out in your way down to make your nose touching the floor and breath in during your way back to the starting position.. I'm asking, Is that how suppose to be breathing at the pike push up. Since i do regular push ups, i breath in when i going down to the floor, and breath out in my way up to the starting position. By the way i did the pike push up today, and felt like my toes raised a bit up from the floor, i feel that improvement
@yurimar
@yurimar 4 жыл бұрын
You don’t wanna breathe in when you’re applying force. So when I do these push-ups I hold my breath on the way down and then I breathe out as I go up. Breathing in the top when I’m in a resting position

Does keeping the forearms vertical in the entire freestanding HSPU play a major role in the balance aspect if one is not as much lacking pushing strength?
@yurimar
@yurimar 4 жыл бұрын
yes. vertical line of force allows you to use your hands properly to maintain balance and also helps counterbalance your shoulders and legs.

@@yurimar You stated that its better achieve the handstand first then work on the handstand press. I was wondering, doing handstand against the wall, would that be a more beneficial exercise to help achieve the handstand press by doing handstand press agains the wall or would you still advice the pike first.
