----------
A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world!

Honestly, some people think Pilate is a bit over the top in this adaption. But I fricking love him. His voice is stunning and I love this clear pronounciation. But the best thing is his facial expression. While talking to Jesus he seems very calm, like he is standing above him and is able to do anything he wants to. But as soon as Jesus goes to Herodes and the mob starts to sing "Hosanna" his eyes look so insecure, as if he isn't sure anymore. He seems so nervous about the situation, when he realizes how powerful the mob is. Just love it. Great acting.

Some of the high priests are bass-baritones, and Caiaphas is a true bass. But Fred's timbre isn't that low. He definitely has a richness on his low notes, but he is a baritone. He hits those F#'s with such ease
@phantomphan873
@phantomphan873 3 жыл бұрын
@@brentgill7180 then yes. But here’s my reason for thinking he is a bass-baritone; He actually did the phantom in phantom of the opera recently, and he struggled with the score. Like his lower range was so powerful and rich, but when you reach the higher range you can hear even from his voice that is was hurting him. He had to strain G4 up. Don’t get me wrong I love Fred, and was so happy he finally did the role.

@@phantomphan873 Fred Johanson is absolutely a bass-baritone considering he could sing the part of Max Von Mayerling in Sunset Boulevard It's also an interesting trend that while Pilate was at a first a tenor role (especially with Barry Dennen) most major productions in recent years have cast baritones in the role (the only major exception being Ben Daniels in the 2018 broadcast, but it's hard to tell as Daniels isn't a singer by trade). It's likely Johanson kick started this shift to Pilate being a baritone role.

I think that a lot of people kinda miss the point of this scene. At 2:10 you can see Pilate finally let down his facade, and the dude is fucking terrified. He's just trying to stop a riot breaking out at this point. He doesn't have the first clue about Jesus or why they want him dead, he's just been sent there to maintain control over a very recently conquered part of the empire, and he's hanging on by a thread. But if he lets the mob see that, they'll just run over him and the other Romans, and if he isn't killed by the mob, he'll almost certainly be executed for failing to maintain order.
@Ian_Jules
@Ian_Jules 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, this interpretation of Pilate is definitely him playing up his tough guy image to the crowd. Scary the same way a constantly screaming fascist dictator is scary. It's essentially putting a mirror on how our real life "strongman" leaders look and act. It works when the audience realizes there's a weak, frightened, rudderless man behind that excessive facade. In other words, yes, it is over the top. And I believe that we, the audience, are meant to be in on that. Incidentally, I have a high regard for Barry Dennen. This is simply a completely different take on the character. I find that JCS73 and JCS2000 each improve when one stops comparing them.

In the production I directed, we used this idea through costume changes; he goes from an expensive dressing gown to a suit/armband and finally full ceremonial uniform; the more out of control his situation becomes, the harder he fights back to present an authoritarian image. What I love about the character is the balancing act of an overburdened politician - Jesus is the hair that breaks the camel's back, finally breaking a stoic facade. Much like Hitler's failure to reinforce Berlin or Moriarty losing his criminal empire, the breakdown Pilate goes through is a very visual turning point
@kerriprice4152

@rogerw.5442
@rogerw.5442 5 жыл бұрын
This was the interpretation of the historical Pilate. He was reprimanded by Caligula (!!!) for his unnecessary cruelty, and the punishment for deportation back to Rome would have been committing suicide. Think of it as the public servant who intends to do just do his job until he's eligible for his pension.
@mainmanbumfuzz8983
@mainmanbumfuzz8983 5 жыл бұрын
I had not considered that, that is absolutely brilliant. Going through the dialog, that explains why pretty much every single interaction he had with Jesus in the song is in the form of a question. He asks questions, he has no idea what is happening. Jesus is stoic. Pilate is confused and freaking out over the jews attending freaking out, as Jesus never actually says anything illegal. He sees the threat of a riot, freaks out, and bounces the accused over to a local court, Herod. Washing his hands as it were.

I love the" someone Christ King of the Jews" line because back then a lot of people actually claimed to be the messiah. This was a fairly common occurrence, which is why the villians refer to Jesus and his disciples as yet another uprising. It happened all the time.
@Blokewood3
@Blokewood3 2 жыл бұрын
It was a horrible choice to give that line to Annas. The line is supposed to be said by one of the Roman guards, but it makes no since for Annas to say it. As one of the Pharisees, Annas is involved with bringing the case against Jesus, so it's stupid for him to pretend he doesn't know who Jesus is. Also, the priests would never refer to Jesus as "King of the Jews," not even mockingly. That is completely out of character.

What surprised me about this scene was that the wardrobe malfunction made it past the editors. On the actual film release I was surprised how much I liked it. I was prepared for a disappointment as I had watched the original film version growing up.

I just saw both this and the 2018 NBC version--and maybe it's because I saw this first--but I really prefer this version of Pilate. It may be over the top, but it is damn fun to listen to.

I've never understood how this scene jibes with the Dream scene where Pilate is all tearful and scared that he's going to be blamed for Jesus' death, and yet here, he's all for it.

My opinion only, I think Pilate is aware Jesus is the "broken man" he dreamed of (from 2:11 to 2:14) thus he cleverly pass the burden onto King Herod, just note how gravely Pilate sounded in "Trial by Pilate" at beginning when the case was thrown back at him and how desperately he fought for not killing Jesus (in this musical) because now he will be personally responsible for his death.

And the way Pilate nervously surveys the room after he ordered Jesus to be sent to Herod shows his fear and his sense of not wanting to be in this position.

This is my favorite version in terms of visual story telling, waaay more compelling than the original 73 version. I really like this version more, even if Juda's voice is not the best in some moments (but he is definitely a better Judas in all other respects) and this Jesus' Gethsemane isn't as powerful. I think it is overall a more powerful movie. Sue me.

actually it was Pilate's wife that had a dream about Jesus not Pilate himself . Pilate asked him again and again are u king of the Jews . and Jesus did say this " it is as you say ". Pilate and King Herod II were enemies at first before becoming friends

This entire film is the most emotional one, everybody seem to understood the character they were playing. Lately I seen lots of emotionless versions and more christian directed ones (cough cough john legend cough cough) who have no relation with the actual vision. The 70s version is a classic, yes, but it also lacks a lot of emotion (probably that was because they filmed on location and the weather made them uncomfortable most of the time)
