I'm lucky enough to have 1-2 woodies in my yard! Not many! I rescued one about 2 years ago, he survived a cat grab! I took him to the animal hospital where they cared for him and then released back into my yard! He occasionally visits me, briefly, to this day! I just hope he has a female counter part!

Thank you for rescuing him! I just saw a video where a stupid person referred to one as a "thing"! He would have killed him I am sure! Just because he pecked at a silly pole!! Hope you'll be rewarded with a whole peckerfamily!🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍🐕🐈🐈🐈🐈🙋‍♀️🍀🍀🍀

Walter Lantz and his wife Gracie were staying in a cabin in June Lake California for their honeymoon and an acorn woodpecker was pecking on a tree in the middle of the night keeping them awake. Then it pecked holes in their roof and caused a leak when it rained. It annoyed him so much he wanted to shoot it but she suggested he should make a cartoon about it instead. That's basically how Woody Woodpecker was born.

We lived in an old converted barn in the mountains of western NC. I loved seeing the woodpeckers. And their calls and drumming were kinda soothing. Except when they'd find a bug in the wood siding. Then they seemed extremely loud

I have one of these in my garden, 7am every morning it does the drumming "call" for about 0.3 seconds and it resonates slightly a bit like when water first moves through heating pipes...unnerving tbh sounds a bit like The Predator

No he's marking his territory and it's also how they attract mates. When they actual peck for food they use single hard strikes that are pretty quiet.
